Senapathy Sivan Temple, Ariyalur Taluk, Ariyalur District

There are two hamlets named Senapathy and Mudikondan located on the Keelapazhuvur-Thirumanur road. Historically, this area was known as 'Vanavichathiranallur' and was granted as a land holding (*kani*) to an official of King Vikrama Chola named Suthamallan Mudikondan—also known as Virutharaja Bhayankara Vanakovaraiyan. Over time, the name 'Vanavichathiranallur' faded away, and the area evolved into two separate hamlets named Senapathy and Mudikondan, derived from the official's name.

This official commissioned the construction of a temple named 'Mudikonda Chola Eswaramudaiya Mahadevar' in this village; the actual construction was carried out by a person named Thapasi Poykkudaiyan Thiruchitrambalapichan. The official also endowed land to support the temple's rituals and its staff. The period dates back to 1124 CE.

An inscription from the 6th regnal year of Vikrama Chola, recording these details, is found at the Alanthuraiyar Temple in Keelapazhuvur. However, no Chola-era temple remains in either Senapathy or Mudikondan today; it can be inferred that the original temple was lost over time. Currently, the only temple in Senapathy is a brick structure dedicated to Lord Viswanathar. A Shiva temple facing east is situated in the center of Senapathy village; it features surrounding compound walls, a beautiful entrance, and a shrine dedicated to Ammaiyappar. Deity: Lord Viswanathar; Goddess: Visalakshi.

Both sanctums are exquisitely constructed using black granite. The architectural style reflects the *Nagarathar* tradition. The presiding deity is a small *Salagrama Lingam*, and the hall extending in front houses a small *Nandi* and a *Bali Peedam* (sacrificial altar). The Goddess is also small in stature.

There is no doubt that this temple was built after a pilgrimage to Kasi; the structure likely dates back no more than two hundred years.

Dakshinamurthy (Lord facing south) is enshrined in the southern *Koshta* (niche); the original idol, having sustained slight damage, has been placed at the base. Goddess Durga is enshrined on the northern side.

A *Vilva* tree stands on a raised platform within the southern *Prakaram* (circumambulatory path). In the western section of the *Prakaram*, housed under a long tiled shed, one finds Lord Vinayagar (with his *Mooshika* vehicle), followed by a medium-sized *Lingam*, then Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai, and finally Goddess Mahalakshmi. The shrine of Chandikeswarar is located on the northern side, while the *Navagrahas* and Lord Bhairavar are situated in the northeast.

The *Lingam* found in the western row of the *Prakaram* could well be the *Senapathi Mudikondan Mudikonda Choleeswaramudaiyar*. It appears we have lost a magnificent Chola-era temple.

At a nearby shop, the actor Rajkiran was singing: "Oh *Kili* (parrot), I am a sinner who forgot to protect the temple that is my mother; I am a sinner who focused only on feeding and nurturing my own mouth and belly."

கீழப்பழூர் - திருமானூர்‌ சாலையில்‌ சேனாபதி 

முடிகொண்டான்‌ என்னும்‌ இரண்டு சிற்றூர்கள்‌ உள்ளன. 

இவ்வூர்‌ வாணவிச்சாதிரநல்லூர்‌ என்ற பெயரில்‌ மன்னர் விக்கிரம சோழனின் ‌ அதிகாரி சுத்தமல்லன்‌ முடிகொண்டானான விருதராஜ பயங்கரவாணகோவரையன்‌ என்பவருக்குக்‌ காணியாக 

வழங்கப்பட்ட ஊராக இருந்துள்ளது,  காலப்போக்கில்‌ 

வாணவிச்சாதிரநல்லூர்‌ என்ற பெயர்‌ மறைந்து இந்த 

அதிகாரியின்‌ பெயரால்‌ சேனாபதி, முடிகொண்டான்‌ என 

இரண்டுசிற்றூர்களாக விளங்குகிறது. 

இவ்வூரில்‌ இவ்வதிகாரி முடிகொண்டசோழ ஈஸ்வரமுடைய மகாதேவர்‌ என்னும்‌ கோயிலைக்‌ கட்டியுள்ளார்‌. இக்கோயிலை தபசி பொய்க்குடையான்‌ திருச்சிற்றம்பலபிச்சன்‌ என்பவர்‌ கட்டியுள்ளார்‌. இக்கோயிலின்‌ பூஜை வழிபாடுகளுக்கும்‌ கோயில்‌ 

பணியாளர்களுக்கும்‌ இவ்வதிகாரி நிலம்‌ வழங்கியுள்ளார்‌.  காலம்; பொ.ஆ.1124

இச்செய்திகளை கொண்ட  விக்ரமசோழனின்‌ 6ஆம்‌ 

ஆட்சியாண்டுக்‌ கல்வெட்டு கீழப்பழுவூர்‌ ஆலந்துறையார்‌ 

கோயிலில்‌ எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால்‌ 

சேனாபதி,  முடிகொண்டான்‌ இரண்டு ஊர்களிலும்‌ 

சோழர்‌ காலக்‌ கோயில்‌ எதுவுமில்லை. காலப்போக்கில்‌ 

இக்கோயில்‌ அழிந்துவிட்டது எனலாம்‌. தற்போது செங்கல்லால்‌ 

ஆன விஸ்வநாதர்‌ கோயில்‌ என்னும்‌ கோயில்‌ மட்டுமே 

சேனாபதியில்  உள்ளது. 

சேனாபதியில் ஊரின் மையத்தில் கிழக்கு நோக்கிய சிவன் கோயில் உள்ளது. நான்கு புறமும் மதில் சுவர்கொண்டு அழகிய நுழை வாயில் மே அம்மையப்பர் உள்ளார். 

இறைவன் விஸ்வநாதர் இறைவி விசாலாட்சி 

இவ்விரு கருவறைகளும் நேர்த்தியாக கருங்கல் கொண்டு கட்டப்பட்டு உள்ளன. கட்டுமான அழகை வைத்து பார்த்தல் நகரத்தார் பாணியில் உள்ளது. இறைவன் சிறிய சாளக்கிராம லிங்க மூர்த்தியாக உள்ளார் எதிரில் நீண்டிருக்கும் மண்டபத்தில் சிறிய நந்தி பலிபீடமும் உள்ளது. அம்பிகையும் சிறிய அளவினராக உள்ளார். 

இந்த மூர்த்திகள் காசி சென்று வந்ததன் பின்னர் கட்டிய திருக்கோயில் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை, இக்காலம் இருநூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்குள்  மட்டுமே இருக்கலாம்.  

கோஷ்டங்களில் தென்முகன் உள்ளார் முன்பிருந்த மூர்த்தி சற்று பின்னமானதால் அதனை கீழ் வைத்துள்ளனர். வடபுறம் துர்க்கை உள்ளார். 

தென் பிரகாரத்தில் ஒரு வில்வமரம் மேடை கட்டி வைக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. பிரகாரத்தின்  மேற்கில் நீண்ட ஓட்டுக்கொட்டகை ஒன்றில் விநாயகர் மூஞ்செலியுடன் உள்ளார் அடுத்து ஒரு நடுத்தர அளவிலான லிங்கமூர்த்தி உள்ளார் அடுத்து முருகன் வள்ளி தெய்வானை சமேதராக உள்ளார். அதற்கடுத்து மகாலட்சுமி  உள்ளார். வடபுறம் சண்டேசர் சன்னதி உள்ளது, வடகிழக்கில் நவகிரகம், பைரவர் உள்ளனர். 

பிரகார மேற்கில் காணப்படும் வரிசையில் உள்ள லிங்க மூர்த்தி தான் சேனாபாதிமுடிகொண்டான்‌ முடிகொண்டசோழீஸ்வரமுடையாராக இருக்கலாம். அற்புதமான சோழர் கோயில் ஒன்றை இழந்துள்ளோம். 

பக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் கடை ஒன்றில் ராஜ்கிரண் “என் தாயென்னும் கோயிலை காக்க மறந்திட்ட பாவியடி கிளியே, என் வாயும் வயிறையும் போற்றி வளர்த்திட்ட பாவியடி கிளியே” என பாடிகொண்டிருந்தார்.
