The temple is located on the banks River Mahanadi and is dedicated to the Goddess Bhattarika, which is also said to be an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. As per the mythology when Parshurama (an avatar of Lord Vishnu) got defeated by the Saharasjuna many a times, he then prayed to Goddess Durga by mediating on a stone.  Temple info -1438 கோவில் தகவல் -1438 The 7th Century rock cut Trikkur Mahadeva Temple The entrance to the Trikkur Mahadeva Kshetram The temple is in multiple layers. At the entrance is a multi pillared hall painted in bright colours right in front of the Dwajasthamba. The main temple complex is at a higher level with steps leading to it. There are also another set of crude steps leading to the Ganapathy, Sapthamatrika and other shrines on top of the hillock. There are other shrines around the circumambulatory path and below the main temple complex. The sanctum sanctorum is within a cave on a hillock. Extensions have been made to include an Artha Mandapa and a Nada with steps leading to the main shrine. Apart from this, the rocks also hold the office block and other shrines. This temple is an ASI protected monument.  I have not heard of many rock cut Shiva temples in Kerala. Not just that, this temple also had several other unique features.  Temple info -1194 கோயில் தகவல் -1194 Located at the base of the Shanmughanathar temple in Kunnakudi is the cave temple for Siva as Thenatrunathar. The temple is not in active use, and is currently an ASI site. The temple complex of Thenatrunathar comprises three adjacent cave temples on the western side of the Murugan temple’s base. All three caves face west, and inside each are enshrined Siva Lingams. While the third of these cave shrines is rather simple, the first two have intricate rock-hewn sculptures, as also dwarapalakas (see below). There is no sthala puranam for this temple. Siva is named Thenatrunathar, because of the river Thenaru which is said to have flowed in the region (it is also one of the Teerthams of the Murugan temple). The rock-cut shrines date back to the 8th century Pandya period, and are the pioneering examples of one aspect of temple iconography – the dwarapalakas. Legends Tirunandeeswaram: A bull in the region was threatening the residents. All prayed to Lord Shiva to contain its violence and the Lord obliged. While pulling, the bull fell in a pit and could not come out. It became the Nandhi of the temple. The installation is designed as if it is in the pit. It is part of Thirunanthikarai Nandeeswarar Temple. It is one of the most famous and ancient temples of Kanyakumari district in Tamilnadu, situated on the river banks of Nandiyaru. It is believed that it was established in the 9th Century AD and it remains one of the founding stones of Jain religion. Once upon a time, there existed a lot of sculptures inside the temple. Although the sculptures are not available at present, there are numerous stone carvings that narrate many interesting tales related to the Indian culture and religion.
