Sadashiva Mahaganapathi Temple

Surathkal, Mangaluru

Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka

This temple had been on my wish list for a long time, and I am happy that I could finally visit this divine abode recently.

I always prefer visiting temples on ordinary days rather than during festivals or public holidays. With fewer crowds, one can truly experience the peace and serenity of the temple, spend time in the divine presence and connect with the Almighty without the rush.

The ancient Sadashiva Temple stands on a hillock overlooking the beautiful Surathkal Beach, with the lighthouse nearby. The breathtaking sea views add to the charm of this sacred place.

According to legend, the top portion of Lord Shiva’s sacred Atma Linga fell at Surathkal. Ravana, the king of Lanka, had obtained the Atma Linga from Lord Shiva after performing intense penance, with the condition that it should not be placed on the ground before reaching Lanka.

Fearing the consequences of Ravana attaining immortality, Narada sought Lord Ganesha’s help. Ganesha, disguised as a young Brahmin boy, took the Atma Linga from Ravana while he went to perform his evening rituals and placed it on the ground at Gokarna.

Enraged, Ravana attempted to uproot the Linga, causing pieces to break off and fall at different places. Tradition holds that the top portion fell at Surathkal, where the Sadashiva Temple stands today, while another portion is associated with Murudeshwara.

It is also believed that the name Surathkal originated from the Kannada words Shira (head) and Kallu (stone), referring to the head portion of the Linga that fell here.

Another local legend speaks of the demons Kahara and Ratta, who carried three Shivalingas. It is believed that the first Linga fell at this place, giving rise to the name Suruta Kallu, meaning the first stone.

While legends offer different explanations for the origin of this sacred place and its name,

I am sharing the information I have collected and do not claim the authority to decide which legend is true. These stories are part of the rich mythology and oral traditions associated with our temples.

Historians date the temple to the 8th century CE. This makes the Sadashiva Temple more than 1,200 years old, adding immense historical significance to this ancient abode of Lord Shiva.

The temple is also known for its distinctive sacred ponds, traditionally associated with the conch, discus, mace and lotus.

An ancient shrine steeped in mythology, surrounded by the beauty of the sea, and located so close to home, yet waiting so long to be visited!
