Vembadi Vinayakar temple,Thiruporur

Has life turned bitter? Discover the Vinayagar who granted deliverance from a curse even to Goddess Mahalakshmi herself! 🙏

At times in life, everything can seem bitter...

No matter how hard you try, problems may remain unresolved.

You might feel remorse for past mistakes.

Unexpected sorrows may seem to strike one after another.

You might experience a sense of emptiness and despair, losing interest in everything around you.

In such moments...

"To whom can I pour out my heart's anguish?"

"To which deity should I appeal to change this situation?"

...your mind begins to search for answers.

Local tradition speaks of a special shrine in Tamil Nadu where Lord Vinayagar is said to have granted relief to Goddess Mahalakshmi herself when she was suffering from a curse.

📍 Location: Thiruporur, Chengalpattu District.

That sacred shrine is the Sri Vembadi Vinayagar Temple.

When one hears "Thiruporur," the first things that come to most devotees' minds are the Kandaswamy Temple and the legends recounting Lord Murugan's battle against the demon Surapadman.

Yet, near that renowned temple, there exists a special Vinayagar shrine that remains unknown to many.

He is Vembadi Vinayagar.

There is a specific reason behind the name "Vembadi" as well.

As local tradition holds that Lord Vinayagar is enshrined beneath a neem tree, He is revered as "Vembadi Vinayagar" (Vinayagar of the Neem Grove).

However, the story behind that neem tree and the Vinayagar shrine is even more fascinating.

Legend has it that, long ago, an *Asura* (demon) caused great torment to the *Devas* (celestial beings).

Distressed by him, the *Devas* sought refuge in Lord Thirumal (Vishnu).

Acceding to the *Devas'* plea, Thirumal attempted to destroy the *Asura*.

Fleeing from Thirumal, the *Asura* reached the hermitage of Sage Bhrigu.

Yet, he found no sanctuary there either.

As he ran in fear, he spotted Pulomasa, the wife of Sage Bhrigu, who was returning after her ritual bath.

He fell at her feet and pleaded,

"Save me... grant me refuge..."

At first, she hesitated.

But upon hearing his desperate cries to save his life, her heart softened.

She granted the *Asura* sanctuary.

Shortly thereafter, Thirumal arrived at the scene.

Pulomasa informed Thirumal that the *Asura* had sought refuge with her.

"He has surrendered to me; therefore, please spare him," she implored.

However, Thirumal persisted in his resolve to destroy the *Asura*.

At that moment, Pulomasi declared firmly:

“I have granted him refuge. Therefore, destroy me first, and only then destroy him.”

These words further inflamed the anger of Thirumal.

She fell, struck down by his *Chakra* (discus weapon).

The events that followed are said to mark a major turning point in the story of this sacred site.

The wives of the sages were terrified upon witnessing this incident.

They immediately rushed to Sage Bhrigu and informed him of what had happened.

When Sage Bhrigu arrived and looked, he found his wife lying lifeless.

However, Thirumal was not directly visible to his eyes.

Legend holds that it was Mahalakshmi, who resided on Thirumal’s chest, who appeared in his vision.

The sage’s anger turned towards Mahalakshmi.

“You, who emerged from the Milky Ocean alongside the nectar of immortality, are the embodiment of sweetness. Yet, what occurred today was a bitter act. Since you were the cause of that deed, you too must be born on Earth as a tree of bitterness!”

So goes the legend regarding Sage Bhrigu’s curse.

That curse deeply distressed Mahalakshmi.

She approached Thirumal and poured out her grief.

It is said that Thirumal then showed her a way out.

“You can be liberated from this curse only by obtaining the divine grace of Lord Vinayaka,” Thirumal told her.

Accordingly, Mahalakshmi descended to Earth.

Local tradition holds that Mahalakshmi assumed the form of a neem tree at a specific location and performed penance, worshipping Lord Vinayaka with a fervent heart.

Days passed.

Mahalakshmi’s penance intensified.

There was but a single prayer in her heart...

“Oh Lord Vinayaka! Please liberate me from this curse.”

Legend has it that Lord Vinayaka accepted her devotion and penance and bestowed His grace upon her.

Mahalakshmi was liberated from the curse.

However, her prayer did not end there.

A compassionate thought arose in her heart: no one else should suffer the kind of anguish she had endured.

Local tradition states that she prayed, “May this Lord Vinayaka also bestow His grace upon people suffering like me and remove their sorrows.”

Accepting Mahalakshmi’s request, Lord Vinayaka continued to bless devotees at the very spot where she had assumed the form of the neem tree.

Legend has it that He came to be revered by the sacred name “Sri Vembadi Vinayagar.”

For this reason, devotees believe that worshipping Vembadi Vinayagar with faith is especially beneficial for those afflicted by life’s sorrows, bitterness, obstacles, or despair.

We must bear one thing in mind here.

Such temple traditions are rooted in faith and devotion.

Rather than viewing this as a guarantee that all of life’s problems will vanish instantly upon worshipping Vinayaka, one can see it as a spiritual path—a way to find hope and peace of mind by turning to the Divine during times of suffering.

The story of Vembadi Vinayagar does not end here.

This Vinayaka is also revered for His close association with the history of the sacred shrine of Lord Muruga at Thiruporur.

Temple history records that Chidambara Swamigal arrived at Thiruporur—a place said to have been known as Yuthapuri—in accordance with the divine command of Goddess Meenakshi. Tradition holds that the area was a dense palmyra forest at that time.

It is said that Chidambara Swamigal, who worshipped that Vinayagar and stayed nearby to perform *Japa* (meditative chanting), sought Lord Kandavel in the palmyra grove.

Local tradition holds that one day, Lord Kanda appeared in a *Swayambu* (self-manifested) form beneath a female palmyra tree.

It is said that Chidambara Swamigal joyfully carried Lord Muruga to the shrine of Vembadi Vinayagar and worshipped Him there.

Historical accounts state that Chidambara Swamigal subsequently engaged in the work of constructing a temple for Lord Muruga.

Consequently, a significant spiritual bond is recognized in the devotional tradition of Thiruporur between Vembadi Vinayagar and the Kandaswamy Temple.

It is said that even today, devotees visiting Thiruporur follow the custom of worshipping Vembadi Vinayagar first before proceeding to have *darshan* of Lord Kandaswamy.

Furthermore, there is a local tradition stating that daily rituals at other shrines commence only after the *pooja* for Vembadi Vinayagar has been performed.

Information indicates that on *Vaikasi Pournami* (the full moon day in the Tamil month of Vaikasi)—which marks the *Guru Puja* day of Chidambara Swamigal—it is customary to offer 1,008 coconuts to Vembadi Vinayagar and to conduct *Annadhanam* (offering of free food).

The significance of this holy site imparts a beautiful spiritual lesson.

If even Goddess Mahalakshmi could face a curse, it shows that trials and tribulations in life are not limited to humans alone.

What matters most is how we respond when faced with such trials.

Mahalakshmi did not crumble under her sorrow.

She turned to the Divine.

She performed penance.

She prayed with devotion.

Legend has it that she was ultimately liberated from the curse.

Therefore, in moments when life seems bitter...

...do not lose hope.

Do not lose faith in the Divine, even when your heart is heavy.

Continue to put in your best efforts.

If needed, share your inner turmoil with family, friends, or trusted individuals.

Seek peace of mind by contemplating the Divine.

For sometimes, what we need first is not an immediate solution to the problem...

...but the reassuring belief that "I am not alone."

Devotees revere Vembadi Vinayagar as a deity who instills this very faith through devotion.

🙏 No matter how many obstacles arise in life, let us move forward with the conviction that "Vinayagar is with us."

Om Sri Vembadi Vinayagare Potri! 🙏🐘🌺

🙏 If you visit Thiruporur, you should first offer worship to Vembadi Vinayagar before visiting Lord Kandaswamy.
