A rare sight: A Shiva Lingam situated on Lord Murugan's forehead

The presiding deity’s idol resembles the Lord Murugan of Thiruttani

Vilangalpattu is located on the southern bank of the Gedilam River, along the Cuddalore-Thirukkovilur highway, approximately 12 km west of Cuddalore.

The Vilangalpattu Sivasubramaniar Temple is situated on the 'Kudalur Kundru' (Kudalur Hill) range in the Cuddalore district. The word 'Vilangal' refers to a hill or a hilly region. To ascend this small, 100-foot-high hill, there are 110 steps as well as a sloping pathway.

A rare sight: A Shiva Lingam situated on Lord Murugan's forehead

In this temple, which is over 300 years old, the presiding deity Sivasubramaniar is enshrined alongside his consorts, Valli and Deivanai. A unique feature of this shrine is the presence of a Shiva Lingam on the forehead of the main Sivasubramania Swamy idol. One cannot find such a depiction—with a Shiva Lingam on Lord Murugan's forehead—at any other pilgrimage site.

This unique feature conveys the spiritual belief that Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan are not separate entities, but one and the same. The Shiva Lingam on Murugan's forehead can be clearly seen during the *Abhishekam* (ritual bathing) ceremony.

The presiding deity’s idol resembles the Lord Murugan of Thiruttani

This temple was constructed following a divine command received by a devotee in a dream, in which Lord Murugan instructed that a temple be built here, modeled after the one in Thiruttani. A distinctive feature is that the idol of the presiding deity bears a striking resemblance to the Lord Murugan of Thiruttani.

A stone *Vel* (spear), known as 'Aathi Vel', has been consecrated in a separate shrine within the temple complex. Devotees offer salt, pepper, turmeric, and sacred ash (*Thiruneeru*) to this *Vel* while offering their prayers. It is the firm belief of the devotees that performing this ritual helps cure chronic or incurable ailments.

முருகப்பெருமானின் நெற்றியில் சிவலிங்கம் அமைந்திருக்கும் அரிய காட்சி

திருத்தணி முருகன் சாயலில் அமைந்திருக்கும் மூலவர் திருமேனி

கடலூருக்கு மேற்கே 12 கி.மீ. தொலைவில், கடலூர் -திருக்கோவலூர் மாவட்ட நெடும் பாதையை ஒட்டிக் கெடிலம் ஆற்றின் தென்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ளது விலங்கல்பட்டு.

கடலூர் மாவட்டத்தில், கூடலூர் குன்று என்ற மலை தொடரில் அமைந்துள்ளது விலங்கல்பட்டு சிவசுப்ரமணியர் கோவில். விலங்கல் என்றால் மலை மற்றும் மலை சார்ந்த பகுதி என்று பொருள். 100 அடி உயரமுள்ள இந்த சிறிய குன்றின் மேலே ஏறுவதற்கு நூற்று பத்து படிக்கட்டுகளும், சரிவான ஒரு சாலையும் உள்ளன.

முருகப்பெருமானின் நெற்றியில் சிவலிங்கம் அமைந்திருக்கும் அரிய காட்சி

300 வருடங்களுக்கு மேல் பழமையான இக்கோவிலில், மூலவர் சிவசுப்பிரமணியர் வள்ளி, தெய்வானை சகிதமாக எழுந்தருளி இருக்கிறார். இங்குள்ள மூலவர் சிவசுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி சிலையின் நெற்றியில் சிவலிங்கம் அமைந்து இருப்பது, இத்தலத்தின் தனிச்சிறப்பாகும். இப்படி முருகப்பெருமானின் நெற்றியில் சிவலிங்கம் அமைந்திருக்கும் தோற்றத்தை, நாம் வேறு எந்த தலத்திலும் காண முடியாது.

இப்படி அமைந்திருப்பது சிவபெருமான் வேறு, முருகன் வேறு என்று இல்லை, இருவரும் ஒருவரே என்ற ஐதீகத்தை உணர்த்துகின்றது. முருகனின் நெற்றியில் அமைந்திருக்கும் இந்த சிவலிங்கத்தை நாம் அபிஷேகத்தின் போது தெளிவாக பார்க்க முடியும்.

திருத்தணி முருகன் சாயலில் அமைந்திருக்கும் மூலவர் திருமேனி

பக்தர் ஒருவரின் கனவில் தோன்றி முருகன், தனக்கு திருத்தணியில் இருப்பது போல் இங்கு கோவில் கட்ட வேண்டும் என்ற உத்தரவின் பெயரில் இந்த கோவில் எழுப்பப்பட்டது. இக்கோவில் மூலவர் திருமேனியானது திருத்தணி முருகன் சாயலில் அமைந்திருப்பது ஒரு தனிச்சிறப்பாகும்.

இக்கோவிலில் கல்லாலான வேல் ஒன்று ‘ஆதிவேல்’ என்ற பெயரில் தனிசன்னதியில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இந்த வேலுக்கு உப்பு, மிளகு, மஞ்சள், திருநீறு ஆகியவற்றை செலுத்தி பிரார்த்தனை செய்கிறார்கள். இப்படி செய்வதால் தீராத நோய்கள் தீரும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் நம்பிக்கை ஆகும்.
