Sowthadka Sri Mahaganapathi Temple –A Unique Temple in Bethangady Taluk of Dakshina Kannada District

There are many famous temples in Dakshina Kannada district, viz., Sri Manjunatheshwara temple at Dharmasthala, Kukke Sri Subrahmanya temple at Subrahmanya and Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple at Kateel, and many others. However, Sri Sowthadka Sri Mahaganapathi temple is a unique temple in that the idol of Sri Mahaganapathi is installed under a tree sans any structure, walls or sanctum sanctorum (Gharba gudi). This temple is open to devotees 24×7, attracting visitors throughout the year. The temple is situated is 3 kms from the main road on the way to Dharmasthala, near Kokkada. The pilgrims visiting Dharmasthala from Bangalore or Subrahmanya find it convenient to visit the temple.

As far as history of the temple is concerned, one of the temples administered by the local royal family in the region was destroyed by enemies in a war. The cowherds living nearby in order to protect the idol of Mahaganapathi, carried it and placed at Sowthadka and started worshipping it daily by offering naivedyam of Sowthe (cucumber) which was being cultivated in the locality. Sowthadka in Kannada means Sowthe (Cucumber) + Adka (a vast plain; field). The temple is located in lush green surroundings and is known as one of the Siddhi kshetras.

It is believed that devotees who pray to Sri Mahaganapathi have their wishes fulfilled. You can witness a large number of bells in front of the temple, offered by devotees in gratitude to Sri Mahaganapathi, who have had their wishes fulfilled. These bells are hung to beams. The prasadam offered at the temple are tasty and nourishing. Depending on the type of seva, you will get different kind of prasadam. Delicious food is served to devotees after the puja at noon, every day.

How to get there:

Sowthadka is 20 km from Dharmasthala, 45 km from Subrahmanya, 82 km from Mangalore and 2 km from Kokkada and 6 km from Patrame. From Bangalore, Sowthadka can be accessed on the road between Nelyadi and Dharmasthala. About 13 km before Dharmasthala is a huge arch on the left side of the road that leads to Sowthadka after a drive of about seven km.

கோயிலின் வரலாற்றைப் பொறுத்தவரை, அப்பகுதியில் உள்ளூர் அரச குடும்பத்தால் நிர்வகிக்கப்பட்ட கோயில்களில் ஒன்று, ஒரு போரில் எதிரிகளால் அழிக்கப்பட்டது. அருகிலிருந்த இடையர்கள், மகாகணபதியின் சிலையைப் பாதுகாக்கும் பொருட்டு, அதனை எடுத்துச் சென்று சௌதட்காவில் வைத்து, அப்பகுதியில் பயிரிடப்பட்டு வந்த சௌத்தே (வெள்ளரிக்காய்) நைவேத்தியம் சமர்ப்பித்து தினமும் வழிபடத் தொடங்கினர். கன்னடத்தில் சௌதட்கா என்றால் சௌத்தே (வெள்ளரிக்காய்) + அட்கா (ஒரு பரந்த சமவெளி; வயல்) என்று பொருள். இக்கோயில் பசுமையான சூழலில் அமைந்துள்ளதுடன், சித்தி க்ஷேத்திரங்களில் ஒன்றாகவும் அறியப்படுகிறது .
