The Kanchipuram Panamaneeswarar Temple (known as Panamaneesam) is one of the Shiva temples in Kanchi. It features a depiction of the deity with Vasuki (the serpent king) appearing to offer worship nearby. References to this temple are found within the sub-temple sections of the *Kanchi Puranam*.

Temple History

When the Milky Ocean (*Thirupparkadal*) was being churned, the serpent Vasuki spewed venom that caused suffering to the world. To cleanse itself of the resulting sin, Vasuki created the Anantha Theertham, installed a Shiva Lingam on its bank, and worshipped the Lord by offering the *manikyam* (ruby/gem) from its own hood. Through this act, it was absolved of its sin and attained grace. The deity came to be known as "Panamaneesar" because he was worshipped using the *manikyam* from the serpent's hood (*pana* refers to the serpent's hood; *mani* refers to the gem).[2]

At that sacred site, to cleanse itself of its transgression, Vasuki

Devoutly enshrined the noble Panamaneesar,

Created the vast Anantha Theertham filled with pure water,

And daily performed worship while stationed on its bank. Synopsis: (1)

To atone for the transgression of having mixed poison into the milk, the great serpent Vasuki—out of deep devotion—consecrated the Lord (known as *Panaamaneesa*) according to scriptural rites, created the sacred *Anantha Theertham* tank filled with pure water, and performed daily worship rituals there.

Verse: (2)

Worshipping *Panaamaneesa* with the gems from his own hood,

And praising Him as "O Lord residing in *Nana*! O Noble One who consumed the harmful poison as if it were food!"

He obtained the boon to remain as an ornament upon the divine body

Of the Consort of Uma.

Synopsis: (2)

By worshipping the Lord *Panaamaneesa* with the gems from his hood and singing praises—addressing Him as the One residing in the holy site of *Nana* and the Lord who consumed the harmful poison as food—he received the boon to adorn the divine body of the Consort of Uma as an ornament.

Thus, he was granted the grace to shine as an ornament on the Lord's divine body, having atoned for the error of mixing poison into the milk.[3]

This shrine is situated in the southeastern part of Kanchipuram—the headquarters of the Kanchipuram district in Tamil Nadu—specifically on Ayyangarpalayam Street (near Thiruvalluvar Street in 'Little Kanchipuram' or *Vishnukanchi*), facing east. Furthermore, the temple is located 75 kilometers from Chennai (the capital of Tamil Nadu) and 3 kilometers from the Kanchipuram bus terminus.[4]

திருப்பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்தபொழுது வாசுகிப் பாம்பு விஷத்தைக் கக்கி உலகைத் துன்புறுத்திய தன் தோசத்தைப் போக்கிக் கொள்ள, அனந்த தீர்த்தத்தை உண்டாக்கி, அதன் கரையில் சிவலிங்கத்தை நிறுவி, தன்னிடத்துள்ள மாணிக்கத்தைச் சுவாமிக்குச் சார்த்தி வழிபட்டு தன் தோசத்தைப் போக்கிப், பேறு பெற்றது. பாம்பின் மணியாகிய மாணிக்கத்தை கொண்டு வழிபட்டமையால், இவ்விறைவர் "பணாமணீசர்" என்று பெயர் பெற்றாரென்பது இத்தல வரலாறாக அறியப்பட்டது.

பணாமணீசப் பெருமானைத் தன்னுடைய படத்தின் இரத்தினங்களால் 

பூசனை செய்து திருநணா என்னும் தலத்தில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள 

விரும்பியடையத்தக்கவனே! வருத்தம் செய்த விடத்தை உணவு போலக் 

கொண்டு பருகும் தலைவனே! எனத் துதி செய்து உமையம்மை மணவாளன் 

திருமேனியில் அணிகலமாகத் தங்குகின்ற வரத்தினைப் பெற்றனன்.

வாசுகி பாலில் விடம் பெய்த பிழையுந் தவிர்ந்து அணிகலனாக 

இறைவன் திருமேனியில் விளங்கவும் பேறு பெற்றனன்.
