Temple History: When Lord Rama was building the bridge to Lanka, he told Hanuman that he needed the medicinal creeper from the sacred tree of the Pujapatheeswarar temple in Suraikkayur. When Hanuman came to Suraikkayur and plucked the medicinal creepers, they said, "Dakshan conducted a sacrifice without respecting Lord Shiva.  Lord Surya, who participated in that sacrifice and provided the fire, incurred various curses. Because of this, we, the medicinal plants of Surya Loka, have lost our radiance. You must do something to change our condition."

Hanuman narrated all that had happened to Lord Rama. After his exile ended, Lord Rama came to this place and, for the first time, consecrated and worshipped his family deity (Surya Narayana Perumal). Following this, all the medicinal plants of Surya Loka regained their radiance.

Temple Significance: This is the only temple in the world with a Surya Medu (Sun Mound). Sage Agastya worshipped here. When we place our hands on the Surya Medu in this temple and worship, we receive the energies of the Sun world through the nerves and veins in our hands.  This removes all ancestral curses and afflictions. Special pujas are performed here for excellence in education, to cure eye problems, to be freed from incurable diseases, and to learn about one's family deity.

Location: The temple can be reached by traveling from Melattur, which is on the Thanjavur - Thirukkarugavur road, towards Ayyampettai to reach Suraikkayur. Temple opening hours: 6 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM.

தல வரலாறு: ராமபிரான் இலங்கைக்கு பாலம் கட்டும் போது சுரைக்காயூர் புஜபதீஸ்வரர் கோயிலின் தலவிருட்சமான பாலக்காட்டு மூலிகைகொடி வேண்டும் என்று ஆஞ்சநேயரிடம் தெரிவித்தார். ஆஞ்சநேயரும் சுரைக்காயூர் வந்து பாலக்காட்டு மூலிகை கொடிகளை பறிக்கும்போது அவை, “தட்சன் சிவபெருமானை மதிக்காது யாகம் நடத்தினார். அந்த யாகத்தில் கலந்துகொண்டு அக்னி வழங்கிய சூரிய பகவானுக்கு பல விதமான சாபங்கள் ஏற்பட்டன. இதனால் சூரிய லோக மூலிகைகளான எங்களுக்கு பொலிவின்றி இருக்கக்கூடிய நிலை ஏற்பட்டது. எங்களது நிலையை மாற்ற தாங்கள் ஏதேனும் செய்ய வேண்டும்” என்றன. 

நடந்த அனைத்து விஷயங்களையும் ஆஞ்சநேயர் ஸ்ரீ ராமச்சந்திர பிரபுவிடம் எடுத்துரைத்தார். ஸ்ரீ ராமச்சந்திர பிரபு தன்னுடைய வனவாசம் முடிந்ததும், இவ்விடத்துக்கு வந்து தன்னுடைய குல தெய்வத்தை (சூரிய நாராயண பெருமாள்) முதன் முதலாக பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபாடு செய்தார். இதைத் தொடர்ந்து சூரியலோக மூலிகைகள் அனைத்தும் புதுப் பொலிவு பெற்றன.

கோயில் சிறப்பு: உலகின் ஒரே சூரிய மேடு தலமான இங்கு அகத்தியர் வழிபட்டுள்ளார். இந்த தலத்தில் உள்ள சூரிய மேட்டில் நம் இரு கைகளை வைத்து வழிபாடு செய்யும்போது நம் கைகளில் உள்ள சூரியன் மேடு நாடி நரம்புகள் இடையே சூரிய உலக சக்திகள் கிடைக்கும். இதனால் நமக்கு ஏற்படக்கூடிய பித்ரு தோஷம், பித்ரு சாபம் அனைத்தும் நம்மை விட்டு நீங்கும். கல்வியில் சிறந்து விளங்க, கண் பிரச்சினை தீர, தீராத நோய்களில் இருந்து விடுபட, குலதெய்வம் குறித்து அறிய இங்கு சிறப்பு வழிபாடு செய்யப்படுகிறது.

அமைவிடம்: தஞ்சாவூர் - திருக்கருகாவூர் செல்லும் சாலையில் உள்ள மெலட்டூரில் இருந்து அய்யம்பேட்டை செல்லும் சாலையில் பயணித்து சுரைக்காயூர் தலத்தை அடையலாம். கோயில் திறந்திருக்கும் நேரம் : காலை 6-12, மாலை 4-8 மணி வரை.
