 Sri Amaneeshwarar temple at Devanampalayam.

Some of the important features of this temple are:

The temple is facing west  in the middle of Karpaka river. The Garuda thoon is in front. As per Gurukkal there are 5 Shiva Lingas, of which 3 ( three ) are in the sanctum Sanctorum installed in a row and two are out side. The centre Shiva Linga is swayambhu. Sannadhis for Chandikeswarar and Dashinamurthy, are  built separately at a latter stage. There is no images in the koshtams / niches. 

Ambal is in maha mandapam facing east. There are 4 Vinayagars, called sathuranga Vinayagars reliefs on the pedestal of Ambal and Athiri Maharishi is at the centre.

The protection deity of this temple Varaaki is facing west. On every Ashtami day “milakai” is being offered. 

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, ardha mandapam and maha mandapam. The Sanctum sanctorum is on a simple pada bandha adhistanam with Jagathy and muppattai kumudam. Brahmakantha pillasters are on the sanctum wall. The prastaram consists of Valapi, Kapotam and Viyyala vari. A two tier nagara stucco nagara Vimanam is over the the Bhumi desam. In addition to there is a open Mukha mandapam at front. 

Ardha mandapam pillars has the images of Lord Shiva's Oorthuva Thandavam ( as per Gurukkal Akora thandava murthy ) and the opposite pillar has the image of Kali's Dance. Both are with 8 hands. The other pillars has the image of a Vijayanagara Nayaka king ( ..?) image, who re-constructed this temple.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

As per Gurukkal, Originally the temple was constructed for Lord Shiva and latter converted as Jains temple. After the Jainism slowly loosed its power, the temple was again converted to Shiva temple and retains the Jainism name of  Sri Amaneeshwarar.  ( People used call Jain Gods as Amana Swamy, since the Jain Monks do not wear any dress ). During reconstruction of this temple the stones are misplaced on many places. Due to this the inscriptions do not have the continuity.

   

As per the inscriptions recorded, the temple exists before Vikrama Chozha period. The   14th century ( 1302 & 1303 CE ) inscription records the  donations made to this temple. The 20th century ( 1904 CE ) inscription records the reconstruction / jeerorthanam of this temple.  A 19th century inscription also there which mentions about the donations made to Devanampalayam Sri Amaneeswarar temple.

Lord Shiva is the kula Deivam for Puluva Gounder koottam,  thalaiyan koottam, a sub section. Hence most of the temple activities are being carried out by them

LEGENDS

It is believed that Sun worships Lord Shiva of this temple. To prove the same, Sun rays falls of moolavar, on no moon days / Amavasai day in the Tamil Month Masi ( Uttarayana ).

It was told that Lord Shiva was worshiped by Athiri Maharishi and Anusuya Devi and they lived here. Pathanjali was born also here. Ashtama siddhars worshiped Lord Shiva and their reliefs can be seen on the pillars.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Athiri maharishi's Guru poojas days on Thursdays, Karthigai deepam, Pradosham, Aruthra Darshan, Masi Shivaratri, Chithirai Vishu and Monthly Shivaratri. It was believed that Siddhars worships Lord Shiva on Shivaratri days.

*மேற்கு நோக்கிய திருத்தலம்! பொதுவாக கோவில்கள் கிழக்கு நோக்கி காணப்படும், அரிதாக ஒரு சில தலங்களில் மட்டுமே மேற்கு நோக்கி காணப்படுகின்றன, திருக்கோயில் ஆற்றுக்கு நடுவே அமைந்துள்ளது* 

*பண்டைய காலத்தில், அத்ரி முனிவரும் அவரது இல்லாள் அனுசுயா தேவியும் ஆசிரமம் அமைத்து வாழ்ந்த திருத்தலமே தேவனாம்பாளையம், ஒருமுறை அத்ரி முனிவர் இமயம் செல்ல, அவர் வருகைக்காக அனுசுயா தேவி காத்திருந்தார். கற்பில் சிறந்த அனுசுயா தேவியை சோதிக்க விரும்பிய மும்மூர்த்திகளான சிவபெருமான், பெருமாள், மற்றும் பிரம்மதேவர், அவரது குடிலை அடைந்தனர். சாதுக்களாக உருமாறிவந்த அவர்களை வரவேற்று உணவுண்ணுமாறு அனுசுயா தேவி வேண்டினார்*

*சாதுக்களும் தாங்கள் கடைபிடிக்கும் விரதத்தை ஒத்து தங்களுக்கு அமுது படைப்பது இயலாத காரியம் எனக் கூறினர், விரதத்தை பற்றி அறிய விரும்பிய அனுசுயா தேவி, அதை தன்னிடம் கூறுமாறு வேண்டினார். சாதுக்களும் ஆடை ஏதுமின்றி ஒருவர் அளிக்கும் உணவையே தங்களால் ஏற்க இயலும் எனக் கூறினர்! திகைத்துப்போன அனுசுயா தேவி, தன் கற்பின் மகிமையால் வந்திருப்பது யார் என அறிந்துக் கொண்டார்*

* சாதுக்களை குழந்தைகளாக மாற்றி அவர்கள் விரதத்தை ஒத்து உணவு வழங்கினார். மும்மூர்த்திகளைத் தேடி வந்த கலைமகள், திருமகள் மற்றும் மலைமகள் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க குழந்தைகளை மீண்டும் சுயவுரு அடைய செய்தார் அனுசுயா தேவி. இந்நிகழ்வு நடந்த திருத்தலம் சுசீந்திரம் என்ற போதும், அத்ரி முனிவர் மற்றும் அனுசுயா தேவியின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கிணங்க தேவனாம்பாளையத்திலுள்ள அவர்களது ஆசிரமத்தில் சுயம்புவாக ஒருசேர மும்மூர்த்திகளும் எழுந்தருளினர்,இதுவே இத்திருத்தலத்தின் தலவரலாறு*

*தலபெருமைகள்:-*

*1. பொதுவாக சிவபெருமான் மட்டுமே லிங்க திருமேனியராக காட்சியளிக்கின்றார். தேவனாம்பாளையத்தில் பெருமாளும் பிரம்மதேவரும் லிங்க திருமேனியராக காட்சியளிக்கின்றனர் என்பது சிறப்பு! அனைவருமே சுயம்பு மூர்த்திகள் என்பது கூடுதல் சிறப்பு*

*2. பொதுவாக மும்மூர்த்தி தலங்களில் சிவபெருமானும் பெருமாளும் தனித்தனி சன்னதிகளிலும், பிரம்மதேவர் வெட்டவெளியில் வன்னிமரத்தின் நிழலிலும் காட்சியளிப்பர். வேறெங்கும் இல்லாத சிறப்பாக, மும்மூர்த்திகளும் ஒரே கருவறையில் ஒருசேர எழுந்தருளியிருப்பது தேவனாம்பாளையத்தில் தான்.),கருவறையில் நடுவில் உள்ள லிங்க திருமேனி சிவபெருமான். இவருக்கு வலப்புறம் உள்ள லிங்க திருமேனி பிரம்மதேவர். சிவபெருமானுக்கு இடப்புறம் உள்ள லிங்க திருமேனி பெருமாள்*

*3. அனுசுயா தேவியின் கற்பை சோதிக்க, ஆடை ஏதுமின்றி அமுது படைக்கக் கூறிய மும்மூர்த்திகள், தேவனாம்பாளையத்தில் ஆடை ஏதுமின்றியே காட்சியளிக்கின்றனர், பண்டைய காலத்திலிருந்து இதுவே மரபு.*

*4. நீண்ட நெடுங்காலமாக, வெண்ணிற பாம்பு ஒன்று திருக்கோயிலுக்குள் வந்து, கருவறையில் இருக்கும் சுயம்பு லிங்கங்களை சுற்றி வலம் வருவதை உள்ளூர் பக்தர்கள் பலர் கண்டுள்ளதாக கூறப்படுகிறது*

*5. ஊர் எல்லையில், கற்பக ஆற்றின் நடுவே ஒரு பாறையில் திருக்கோயில் அமைந்துள்ளது. மழைக்காலங்களில் ஆற்றின் நீர் மட்டம் உயரும் போது, நீர் திருக்கோயிலை சுற்றி ஓடும். அச்சமயங்களில் திருக்கோயிலுக்கு செல்வது கடினம்*

*6. மகாமண்டபத்தில் பிள்ளையாருடன் அருள்புரியும் அகிலாண்டேஸ்வரி அம்மனைக் காணலாம். அம்மன் சன்னதி தெற்கு நோக்கி காணப்படுகிறது*

*7. அன்றும், இன்றும், என்றும் தேவர்களும், சித்தர்களும், யோகிகளும் வந்து வணங்கிச்செல்லும் இந்த திருத்தலத்தில், தற்கால உடைகளான பேண்ட், சட்டை அணிந்து செல்பவருக்கு அனுமதி இல்லை. ஆண்கள் வேட்டி அணிந்தும், பெண்கள் சேலை அணிந்தும் செல்வது நல்லது*

*8. அத்ரி முனிவருக்கும், அனுசுயா தேவிக்கும் நந்தியின் மீது அமர்ந்த நிலையில் சிவபெருமானும் அம்மனும் காட்சிகொடுத்த அரிய திருத்தலம் தேவனாம்பாளையம். அப்போது நந்தியின் குளம்பு பாறையில் பதிந்தது. இன்றும், நந்தியின் குளம்பு  பாறையில் பதிந்த தடயத்தை நாம் தரிசனம் செய்ய இயலும்*

9. மகாமண்டபத்தில் வெள்ளைக்கல் நந்தி, எட்டு தேவதைகள், பிள்ளையார் மற்றும் முருகன் சிலாரூபங்கள் உள்ளன. அர்த்தமண்டபத்தில் எட்டு கரங்களுடன் காட்சிதரும் ருத்ரதாண்டவர் மற்றும் காளி சிலைகள் கலைநயத்துடன் தூண்களில் காணப்படுகின்றன, ருத்ரதாண்டவரின் எட்டு கரங்களிலும் ஆயுதங்கள் உள்ளன*

10. இத்தலத்தில் முன்னோர்களுக்கு திதி கொடுக்கப்படுகிறது ஆதிகாலத்தில் திருக்கோயிலை நளன் கட்டியதாகவும்,  பிற்காலத்தில் சோழமன்னர்கள் பெருமளவில் திருப்பணி செய்ததாகவும் கல்வெட்டுகளில் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது
