Kolavizhi Amman Temple, Mylapore, Chennai

Kolavizhi Amman Temple is a Hindu Temple located at Gopathy Narayana Chetty Street opposite to Valiswarar temple and to the east of Mundakkanni Amman Temple. This is a 1000 years old temple. Kolavizhi Amman was the protective god when Mylapore was a big Village. Normally Amman’s are protectors of the territories. The poojas are conducted as per agama by the non-Brahmin Poojaris.

Legends

It is said that a British lost his vision after photographing the Fire Walk festival and regained his vision only after worshipping this Goddess.

The Temple

The temple and presiding deity Kolavizhi Amman is facing north. The presiding deity is Kolavizhi Amman otherwise called as Bhadrakali Amman, Ambika, Mayurapuri Grama Devatha. The deity in this temple is believed to be Suyambhu in form and she is known for her love and affection towards devotees.

In the sanctum Amman’s stucco statue is on the back-side wall and Abhishekam is done for the Urchavar. There are shrines of Sapthamadhas in a single panel, Vinayagar, Nagars in the Temple. There is well covered with Iron grills. Lot of lock are locked with the grill. This temple is attached to Kapaleeshwarar temple of Mylapore.

Festivals

Brahmotsavam or any functions preference is given first to Kolavizhi Amman and after that only to Kapali temple. In 63var processions also Kolavizhi Amman leads the other chariots. The important functions held in this temple are Pournami Pooja (the vegetables offered are hanged in the temple), Poochoridal, carrying Poochatti (carrying the fire pots), and Milk Abhishekam carrying in a procession.

Prayers

It was believed that Kolavizhi Amman will remove the hurdles like legal cases, etc., The devotees praise Kolavizhi Amman as the Guardian angel and protects from any danger including Natural disasters. It is believed that those who worship at this temple will be cured of all diseases and blessed with peace & prosperity

Connectivity

Kolavizhi Amman Temple is at Gopathy Narayana Chetty Street opposite to Valiswarar temple and to the east of Mundakkanni Amman Temple. From the Mylapore Tank bus stop, you can take the Kutchery Road and from there the G. N. Chetty Street to the temple. The Temple is located at about 600 meters from Kutchery Road Bus Stop, 1.2 Kms from Mylapore Bus Stop and 1 Km from Mylapore Railway Station.

Mylapore is located a few kilometers to the south of the British-built Chennai city. It lies between Triplicane and Teynampet in the west then across to the coast in the east. It is bounded by Royapettah to the north. Its southern frontier corresponds roughly with that of the River Adyar. It extends for around 4 km from north to south and 2 km from east to west.

Mylapore is in the heart of Chennai city and is linked with local trains and bus facilities. Mylapore is located at about 5 Kms from Triplicane, 3 Kms from Teynampet, 2.5 Kms from Royapettah, 6 Kms from Adyar, 6 Kms from T Nagar, 3 Kms from Marina Beach, 3 Kms from Santhome, 3 Kms from Alwarpet, 5 Kms from Nungambakkam and 7 Kms from Kodambakkam.

Mylapore is connected to other parts of the city by MTC buses, with connections including Chennai Central, T. Nagar, Tambaram, Broadway. Mylapore is located at about 10 Kms from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.

ராகு, கேது தோஷம் நீக்கி, பக்தர்களைக் காத்தருளும் கோலவிழி அம்மன்!

1. சென்னை மாநகரின் மயிலாப்பூர் பகுதியில் வீற்றிருப்பவள்தான் கோலவிழி அம்மன். அருள்நிறைந்த அழகிய விழியால் ஆட்சி செய்யும் இந்த அன்னை மயிலாப்பூரின் கிராமதேவதை என போற்றப்படுகிறாள்.

2. அஷ்ட திக்கிலும் அமர்ந்து இருக்கும் எட்டு காளிகளில் இவளே மூத்தவள் எனப்படுகிறாள். இந்தக் கோயிலில் கோலவிழி அம்மன் இரண்டு திருவுருவங்களில் காட்சி தருகிறாள். கருவறையில் முன்பாக உள்ள சிறிய விக்கிரகம் ஆதிசங்கரரால் இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபட்டதாகவும், அதற்குப் பின்புறம் உள்ள பெரிய விக்கிரகம் சித்தர்களால் பத்தாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபடப்பட்டது என்றும் தலவரலாறு கூறுகின்றது.

3. பராசக்தியின் கோபசக்தியாக வெளிப்பட்ட இவள், துஷ்டசக்திகளை அழிக்கும் வல்லமை கொண்டவள்.

4. பக்தர்களை காப்பதற்கு தயார் நிலையில் இருப்பதைப் போன்று, வலது காலை சற்றே தூக்கியபடி அமர்ந்து காட்சி தரும் கோலவிழி அன்னை, காண்பவரை பரவசம் கொள்ளச் செய்பவள்.

5. கோலவிழி அம்மனுக்கு பூஜை செய்த பிறகே கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோயிலின் திருவிழா ஆரம்பமாகிறது என்பதும், அறுபத்து மூவர் விழாவில் முதல் புறப்பாடு செல்வதே கோலவிழி அம்மன்தான் என்பதும் இந்த ஆலயத்தின் சிறப்பு.

6. அமர்ந்த கோலத்தில் அற்புதமான எழிலுடன் கொலு வீற்றிருக்கும் இந்த அன்னையை வழிபட்டால் ராகு கேது தோஷம் நீங்கும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் நம்பிக்கை.

7. இங்கு அமைந்து இருக்கும் வாராகி திருவுருவத்துக்கு எதிரில் வாராகியின் வாகனமான ஆமை வடிவம் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதற்கு வெள்ளி, செவ்வாய்க் கிழமைகளில் இளநீரால் அபிஷேகம் செய்தால் வியாதிகள் தீரும் என்பது இந்த ஆலயத்தின் விசேஷம்.

8. இந்த ஆலயத்தின் பிராகாரத்தில் உள்ள நாகலிங்க மரத்தில் சுயம்புவாக உருவான நாகவடிவம் பக்தர்களால் போற்றி வணங்கப்படுகிறது. இதனால் நாக தோஷம் விலகும் என்பது ஐதீகம்.

9. பக்தர்கள் இங்கு வந்து வேண்டிக்கொண்டது நிறைவேறியதும் அதற்குக் காணிக்கையாக அம்மனுக்கு பூட்டுகள் வாங்கி அதைப் பூட்டி, சாவியை அம்மனிடம் ஒப்படைப்பது இங்கு வித்தியாசமான வேண்டுதல்.

10. கடலுக்குக் காவலாக அமர்ந்து இருக்கும் இந்த கோலவிழி அன்னையே மயிலாப்பூரை பாதுகாத்து வருகிறாள். இந்த அன்னை சுனாமி போன்ற கடல் சீற்றங்களை அடக்க வல்லவள் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.

11. மயானத்தை எதிர்நோக்கியபடி வடக்கு நோக்கிமௌ அமர்ந்து இருக்கும் இந்த காளி கருணையே உருவானவள் என்றாலும், தனது பக்தர்களுக்கு வரும் எந்த இடையூறையும் எதிர்த்து நின்று காப்பவள்.

12. வேப்ப மரமும் அரச மரமும் பின்னிப்பிணைந்து இங்கு தலவிருட்சமாக காட்சி தருகிறது. இங்கு தொட்டில் கட்டி வணங்குவதும், மஞ்சள் கிழங்கு கட்டி கும்பிடுவதும் பெண்கள் வழக்கம்.

13. மிகத் தொன்மையான காலத்தில் இருந்தே சித்தர்கள், யோகிகள், தொண்டைமண்டல அரசர்களின் வழிபாட்டுக்கு உரியவளான இந்த தேவி அனைத்து தோஷங்களையும் நீக்க வல்லவள்.

14. காளஹஸ்தி போக முடியாதவர்கள் இந்த அன்னையின் ஆலயத்துக்கு வந்து வழிபட்டால் ராகு, கேது தோஷங்களை நீக்கி விடுவாள். திருமணத் தடை, புத்திர தோஷம் போன்றவற்றையும் போக்கி அருள்புரியக்கூடியவள் கோலவிழி அம்மன்.

15. கோலவிழி அம்மன் கோயில் மயிலாப்பூர் பஜார் வீதியில் இருந்து கடற்கரைக்குச் செல்லும் சாலையில் அமைந்திருக்கிறது.

16. செவ்வாய்க் கிழமை ராகு கால பூஜை மற்றும் வியாழக்கிழமை மாலை தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி பூஜை இங்கு விசேஷம். மற்றபடி ஆடிமாத அத்தனை நாளுமே இங்கு விசேஷம்தான்.

சென்னை அருகேயே உள்ள இந்த கோலவிழி அன்னை அழகிய கண்களால் தனது பக்தர்களை காப்பவள். ஒருமுறை இந்த ஆடி மாதத்தில் வந்துதான் அவளது அழகைப் பாருங்களேன். உங்கள் வாழ்வே வளமிக்கதாகும்.
