Shantinatha Basadi, Jinanathapura.
The Shantinatha Basadi, also known as Shantishvara Basadi, is a historic Jain temple dedicated to Shantinatha, the sixteenth Tirthankara, located in the village of Jinanathapura approximately 2 kilometers north of Shravanabelagola in the Hassan district of Karnataka, India.
Constructed around 1200 CE during the reign of Hoysala king Veera Ballala II, it was commissioned by the Hoysala general Recana (also referred to as Rechana or Recimayya), who dedicated the structure to his spiritual teacher, the Jain monk Sagaranandi Siddhantadeva.
This temple stands as a rare and ornate example of Hoysala architectural influence on Jain sacred spaces, blending the dynasty's signature elaborate stonework with traditional Jaina iconography and restraint.
Situated at the northern base of Chandragiri Hill, the basadi emerged in a region with deep roots in Jainism, tracing back to the third century BCE when Emperor Chandragupta Maurya and his guru Bhadrabahu are said to have migrated there, establishing Shravanabelagola as a pivotal center of the faith.
Jinanathapura itself was founded in 1117 CE by Gangaraja, a minister under Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana, as a suburban settlement that fostered Jaina institutions amid the dynasty's patronage of multiple religions.
The temple's construction reflects the Hoysala era's flourishing of Jainism in Karnataka, where royal and elite supporters adapted ornate Hindu temple aesthetics—typically seen in sites like Belur and Halebidu—to Jaina contexts, diverging from the plainer Ganga-style basadis common in earlier periods.
Built on a raised platform (jagati) with a star-shaped foundation—a hallmark of Hoysala design—it employs granite for the inner walls and schist for the exterior, allowing for profuse ornamentation on three walls of the vimana (tower).
The exterior boasts over 50 reliefs, including large central Jina images flanked by dancers, musicians, yakshas, and yakshis, as well as rare depictions of erotic couples (maithuna) and classical Karnataka dance forms like Perani and Gaundali.
The basadi's significance lies in its role as a testament to the adaptive evolution of Jain architecture under Hoysala rule, highlighting how elite patronage integrated secular and mythical motifs into religious spaces while preserving core Jaina principles of austerity and non-violence.
It suffered damage from floods in 2005 but was subsequently renovated by archaeological authorities, ensuring its preservation as a key heritage site that draws scholars, pilgrims, and art enthusiasts to study its iconographic richness and historical context.
📍 Shantinatha Basadi is situated on the northwestern side of Jinanathapura village in Channarayapatna taluk, Hassan district, Karnataka, India, approximately 2 km from the renowned pilgrimage center of Shravanabelagola and positioned behind the Chandragiri hillock.
