 Temple info -1140 கோயில் தகவல் -1140 Prasanna Vinayakar Temple,Udumalpet  This place was earlier a forest with rocky projections with lot of Monitor Lizards ( Udumbu in Tamil ).  Hence it was known as Udumbu Malai which later became Udumalpet.  This is around 70 Kms from Coimbatore. One of the ancient temples in this town is the Shri Prasanna Vinayakar temple in the heart of the town on a small rock.  As the hill is of semi circular shape, this place is also called Chakrapuri.  As per the local legends, Tipu Sultan occupied this territory during his regime.  When he was attacked, he took shelter in the rock which also acts as a natural fortification.  He was thus saved.  In his dream, Vinayakar appeared and asked him for his contribution for having saved him.  ( Hence the belief by the local people that like Tirupathi, here also the Lord demands Kanikkai! )    The Sultan thought for some time and finally decided to construct a...
