*ஸ்கந்த புராணத்தின் 'அவந்திகா' பகுதியில், 'திருடன் கணேஷ்' பற்றிய குறிப்பு காணப்படுகிறது. சொல்லப்போனால், இக்கோவிலில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள ஸ்ரீ கணேஷின் உண்மையான பெயர் 'துர்முக கணேஷ்' என்பதாகும்; இருப்பினும், இது 'திருடன் கணேஷ்' என்றே பரவலாக அறியப்படுகிறது.*

உஜ்ஜைன் நகரின் பழைய பகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ள இக்கோவில், 'சிம்ஹஸ்த மேளா' நடைபெறும் வளாகத்தில் உள்ள ராம் ஜனார்தன் கோவிலுக்குச் செல்லும் சாலையில் அமைந்துள்ளது. 'சோர் கணேஷ்' (திருடன் கணேஷ்) என அழைக்கப்படும் இக்கோவிலில், விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தித் திருவிழாவின்போது பக்தர்கள் கூட்டம் அலைமோதும். இக்கோவில் மீது மக்களுக்கு மிகுந்த நம்பிக்கையும் பக்தியும் உண்டு. *ஸ்கந்த புராணத்தின் 'அவந்திகா' பகுதியில், 'திருடன் கணேஷ்' பற்றிய குறிப்பு காணப்படுகிறது.*

ஒரு பக்தருக்குச் சொந்தமான பொருள் ஏதேனும் தொலைந்துபோனாலோ அல்லது திருடப்பட்டுவிட்டாலோ, அவர் 'திருடன் கணேஷ்' கோவிலுக்குச் சென்று, தொலைந்த அல்லது திருடப்பட்ட அப்பொருள் மீண்டும் கிடைக்க வேண்டி மனமுருகப் பிரார்த்தனை செய்வார். பக்தர்கள் தங்கள் விலைமதிப்புள்ள பொருட்கள் தொலைந்துபோனாலோ அல்லது திருடப்பட்டுவிட்டாலோ, அவற்றை மீண்டும் கண்டெடுக்கும் நம்பிக்கையுடன் 'திருடன் கணேஷ்' சன்னிதிக்கு வந்து வழிபடுகின்றனர்.

பழங்காலத்தில் இக்கோவில் அமைந்திருந்த பகுதி மிகவும் ஒதுக்குப்புறமாகவும் ஆள் அரவமற்றதாகவும் திகழ்ந்தது. அக்காலத்தில் திருடர்கள், தாங்கள் திருடி வந்த பொருட்களை இக்கோவிலின் வளாகத்தில் வைத்துப் பகிர்ந்துகொள்வது வழக்கம். திருடிய பொருட்களில் எவையேனும் இறுதியில் எஞ்சியிருந்தால், அவற்றை அவர்கள் ஸ்ரீ கணேஷருக்குக் காணிக்கையாகச் செலுத்திவிட்டுச் செல்வார்கள். அன்று முதல், ஸ்ரீ கணேஷரின் இக்கோவில் 'திருடன் கணேஷ் கோவில்' என்றே அழைக்கப்படலாயிற்று. *சூரியனின் இடது பக்கம்*
