Chokkanathapuram Shiva Temple – Sendurai Taluk, Ariyalur District

The village of Chokkanathapuram is situated 7 kilometers west of Sendurai, located along the Puduvettakkudi road. The Shiva temple stands right on this main road, while a Perumal (Vishnu) temple is situated a short distance away on the same route. The temple's main entrance faces the road to the south; there is also a small iron gate located on the eastern side. The temple complex is enclosed by a high perimeter wall, and beautiful stucco sculptures adorn the gateway. Upon entering, one encounters the sanctum sanctorum, which faces east and features architectural elements characteristic of the Chola era.

The temple layout consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an *Antarala* (intermediate passage), and a *Mukha Mandapam* (front hall); the sanctum of the Goddess (Ambigai) is integrated into this front hall. At the entrance of both the Lord's and the Goddess's sanctums, there stand two stucco *Dwarapalakas* (guardian deities). Outside the front hall, there is a *Nandi Mandapam* (pavilion housing the sacred bull) and a *Bali Peedam* (sacrificial altar). The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is enshrined in the form of a medium-sized *Lingam*. The *Koshtams* (niches) on the exterior walls of the sanctum house images of Vinayagar (Ganesha), Dakshinamurthy, Lingodbhavar, Brahma, and Durga.

Within the *Prakaram* (outer courtyard), there is a long *Thirumaligaipathi* (cloister) housing shrines for Vinayagar, Murugan, and Mahalakshmi. The statue of Lord Murugan is quite large and is accompanied by a large peacock positioned directly in front of it; adjacent to this shrine stands Idumban, depicted carrying a large pot on his shoulder and wielding a sword in his hand. Lord Chandikeswarar is enshrined in a separate, dedicated shrine.

In the northeastern corner of the courtyard, there are shrines for Lord Bhairavar and the *Navagrahas* (nine planets).

The temple functions with simple daily rituals and worship services. Since the temple is situated right along the main road, I encourage anyone traveling through this region to take a moment to visit and offer prayers at this beautiful village Shiva temple.

செந்துறையின் மேற்கில் உள்ள புதுவேட்டக்குடி சாலையில் 7 கமி தூரத்தில் உள்ளது இந்த சொக்கநாதபுரம்  கிராமம்.   பிரதான சாலையிலேயே உள்ளது சிவன்கோயில். இதே சாலையில் சற்று தள்ளி அமைந்துள்ளது பெருமாள் கோயில். பிரதான வாயில் தெற்கில் உள்ள சாலையினை நோக்கி உள்ளது. கிழக்கில் சிறிய இரும்பு கதவு ஒன்றும் உள்ளது.  உயர்ந்த சுற்றுமதில் சுவர் கொண்டுள்ளது அழகிய சுதைகள் நுழைவாயில் மேல் அலங்கரிக்கின்றன.  உள்ளே சென்றாவுடன் கிழக்கு நோக்கிய சோழர்கால கட்டுமானத்துடன் கூடிய கருவறை உள்ளது.

கருவறை இடைநாழி முகப்பு மண்டபம் என உள்ளது, அம்பிகையின் கருவறை முகப்பு மண்டபத்தில் சேர்க்கிறது. இறைவன் இறைவி இருவரது கருவறை வாயிலிலும்  சுதையாலான இரு துவாரபாலகர்கள் உள்ளனர். முகப்பு மண்டபத்தின் வெளியில் நந்தி மண்டபமும் பலிபீடமும் உள்ளது. இறைவன் நடுத்தர அளவுடைய லிங்கமூர்த்தியாக உள்ளார். கருவறை கோஷ்டத்தில் விநாயகர் தென்முகன் லிங்கோத்பவர் பிரம்மன் துர்க்கை உள்ளனர். 

பிரகாரத்தில் நீண்ட திருமாளிகைபத்தி உள்ளது அதில் விநாயகர் முருகன் மகாலட்சுமி உள்ளனர். முருகன் பெரிய அளவில் உள்ளார் எதிரில் பெரிய மயில் ஒன்றும் உள்ளது,  சன்னதியை  ஒட்டி இடும்பன் தோளில் பெரிய பானை ஒன்றை தோளில் சுமந்தும் கையில் வாள் ஒன்றை ஏந்தியும் நிற்கின்றார். சண்டேசர் தனி சன்னதியில்  உள்ளார். 

வடகிழக்கில் பைரவர் நவகிரகங்கள்  உள்ளனர். 

எளிமையான தினசரி பூஜைகளுடன் கோயில் இயங்கி கொண்டு உள்ளது. சாலையை ஒட்டியே கோயில் உள்ளதால் இப்பகுதி வழியே செல்லும் போது இக் கிராம சிவாலயத்தினை தரிசிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன்.
