Periyakuruvadi Sivan Temple, Mannargudi Taluk, Thiruvarur District 

Periyakuruvadi Sivan Temple 

You can get off at Letchumangudi, a village near Thiruvarur, and from there you can go to Periyakuruvadi, which is 10 km away, via Tanhirkunnam. 

Bhagirathan, who was born in the Surya clan, performed severe penance to bring the Ganga from the sky to earth so that his ancestors could attain peace of mind. Taking pity on his penance, Ganga agreed to come to earth. 

However, when she descended from the sky at a fast pace, she hesitated, fearing that the world would be destroyed if she could not keep up with the speed. She told Bhagirathan about this. 

Bhagirathan replied, “Devi, you don’t need to worry about that. When you descend at a fast pace, I pray to Lord Shiva to bear your speed.” Accordingly, Bhagirathan performed severe penance seeking the grace of Lord Shiva.

When the Ganga was rushing down from the sky, the earth could not bear the speed of the goddess. Therefore, he prayed to the Lord, who was merciful to him, to hold the Ganga in his head and slow down the speed of the Ganga. ``Let it be so,'' Lord Shiva, who was pleased, said, ``Let it be so,'' and in memory of the history of holding the Ganga, which was coming down from the sky, in his head and slowing it down to the earth, there is a Ganga Visarjana Kolam behind the Shivalinga in the sanctum sanctorum of this temple. This is something that cannot be seen anywhere else. 

This temple was built with black stones by Arangan Thiruchitrampalamudaiyan, a resident of this village, a close associate of Veerarajendra Chola, and a member of the Vellalar lineage. He has installed the 'Ganga Visarjana' image of Lord Shiva, who released the Ganga from his crown on earth for the prosperity of the world, behind the Shivalinga idol in the sanctum sanctorum. The time is the latter part of the tenth century. 

He also named the temple 'Agatheeswaram' in honor of Agasthiyar, who released the Cauvery from its Kamandalam.

This temple, which has been managed by the Vellars for generations, has fallen into disrepair over time. 

Wanting to restore the dilapidated temple, the villagers have formed a restoration committee and have completed the temple. 

In the sanctum sanctorum facing east, there is Agatheeswarar with Ganga Visarjana. There is an intermediate nave and an arthamandapam. In the Arthamandapam, there is a painting of Bhagiratha at the feet of the figure of Agasthiyar worshipping Lord. Beyond this, there may have been a Mahamandapam. This place is now empty, and beyond it there is a four-pillared Nandi Mandapam and an altar. 

In the sanctum sanctorums at the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum, there are Vinayaka and Murugan. In the koshtas, Dakshanmoorthy is beautifully displayed on the south side. In the west, there is Lingodpavara and in the north, Durga. 

In the small shrines, there are Vinayaka and Jeshtadevi and Murugan. Chandesar is in the usual place. The Nardana Vinayaka, which should be in the koshtas, has been placed in the small shrine. 

In the north-east, in a tin shed, there is a statue of a servant with folded hands, but it is not known what it is. The hall may be the statue of Thiruchitrampalamudaiyaan, and there are two Bhairavas nearby. The new addition is the Navagrahas. There is a large pond on the south side of the temple. 

Since the ‘Ganga Visarjana Murthy’ bestowed upon Bhagirathan to remove the curse of Pitru is here, it is believed that if you come here and pray to the Swami, the Pitru doshas will be removed. Also, Jeshta Devi, who first appeared in the Thiruparkadal, is with Manthan Manthi, she can protect us from accidents in worship vehicles. Maintaining this temple is also a huge expense,

திருவாரூர்  அருகில்  உள்ள லெட்சுமாங்குடி என்ற ஊரில் இறங்கி, அங்கிருந்து தண்ணீர்குன்னம் வழியாக 10 கிமி தொலைவில் உள்ள பெரிய குருவாடிக்கு செல்லலாம். 

சூரிய குலத்தில் தோன்றிய பகீரதன், தன் முன்னோர்கள் ஆத்ம சாந்தி பெறும் பொருட்டு, விண்ணில் இருக்கும் கங்கையைப் பூமிக்கு வரவழைப்பதற்காகக் கடும் தவம் மேற்கொண்டார். அவரது தவத்துக்கு இரங்கிய கங்கை, பூமிக்கு வரத் திருவுள்ளம் கொண்டாள். 

ஆனால், விண்ணில் இருந்து தான் வேகமாக இறங்கும்போது, அந்த வேகத்துக்கு ஈடு கொடுக்க முடியாமல் உலகம் அழிந்துவிடுமே என்று தயங்கினாள். இதைப் பகீரதனிடம் தெரிவித்தாள்.

அதற்குப் பகீரதன், ‘`தேவி, அந்தக் கவலை உங்களுக்கு வேண்டாம். நீங்கள் வேகமாகக் கீழே இறங்கும்போது, உங்களுடைய வேகத்தைத் தாங்கிக்கொள்ளும்படி சிவபெருமானை வேண்டிக் கொள்கிறேன்’’ என்றார். அதன்படி, சிவபெருமானின் அருள்வேண்டி கடும் தவம் இயற்றினார் பகீரதன்.

 தவத்துக்கு இரங்கிய இறைவனிடம் கங்கை விண்ணில் இருந்து சீறிப் பாய்ந்து கீழிறங்கும்போது, தேவியின் வேகத்தை இந்தப் பூமி தாங்காது. எனவே, தாங்கள்தான் அருள்கூர்ந்து கங்கையைத் தங்கள் திருமுடியில் தாங்கி, கங்கையின் வேகத்தைக் குறைக்க வேண்டும்’’ என்று பிரார்த்தித்துக் கொண்டார். ``அவ்வாறே ஆகட்டும்'' என்று திருவருள் புரிந்த சிவனார், விண்ணில் இருந்து வேகமாக இறங்கிய கங்கையைத் தம் திருமுடியில் தாங்கி வேகம் குறைத்து பூமியில் இறக்கி விட்ட வரலாற்றை நினைவூட்டும் வண்ணம் இக்கோயிலில் கருவறையில் சிவலிங்கத்தின் பின்புறம் கங்கா விசர்ஜன கோலம் உள்ளது. இது வேறெங்கும் காண இயலாத ஒன்றாகும் 

இந்த ஊரைச் சேர்ந்தவரும், வீரராஜேந்திர சோழரின் உடன் கூட்ட அதிகாரியும்,  வேளாளர் மரபில் பிறந்த அரங்கன் திருச்சிற்றம்பலமுடையான் என்பார் கருங்கற்களைக் கொண்டே கட்டிய கோயில் இது. உலகம் செழிக்கத் தம் திருமுடியில் இருந்து கங்கையைப் பூமியில் விடுவித்த சிவபெருமானின் ‘கங்கா விசர்ஜன’ திருவுருவத்தைக் கருவறையில் சிவலிங்க மூர்த்தத்துக்குப் பின்புறம் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்திருக்கிறார்.  காலம் பத்தாம் நூற்றாண்டின் பிற்பகுதி ஆகும். 

மேலும், காவிரியைத் தம் கமண்டலத்தில் இருந்து விடுவித்த அகத்தியரைப் போற்றும் வகையில் கோயிலுக்கு `அகத்தீஸ்வரம்' என்னும் பெயரையும் சூட்டினார்.

பரம்பரையாக வேளாளர்களால் நிர்வாகம் செய்யப்பட்டு வந்த இந்தக் கோயில், காலப்போக்கில் சிதிலம் அடைந்து விட்டது.

சிதிலம் அடைந்த ஆலயத்தைப் புதுப்பிக்க விரும்பி, ஊர்மக்கள் ஒரு திருப்பணி கமிட்டி ஏற்படுத்தி, குடமுழுக்கும் கண்டுள்ளனர். 

கிழக்கு நோக்கிய இறைவன் கருவறையில்  அகத்தீஸ்வரர் உடன் கங்காவிசர்ஜனர் உள்ளார் இடைநாழி, அர்த்தமண்டபம் என உள்ளது. அர்த்தமண்டபத்தில் அகத்தியர் இறைவனை வழிபடும் கோலம் காலடியில் பகீரதன் இருக்கும் ஓவியம் வரையப்பட்டு உள்ளது. இதனை  தாண்டி மகாமண்டபம் ஆகியவை இருந்திருக்க கூடும். இவ்விடம் இப்போது காலியாக உள்ளது அதனை தாண்டி நான்கு தூண்கள் கொண்ட நந்தி மண்டபமும் பலிபீடமும் உள்ளது. 

 கருவறை வாயிலில் உள்ள மாடங்களில் விநாயகரும் முருகனும் உள்ளனர். கோஷ்டங்களில் தென்புறம் தக்ஷணமூர்த்தி அற்புதமான அழகுடன் காட்சி தருகிறார்.  மேற்கில் லிங்கோத்பவரும் வடக்கில் துர்க்கையும் உள்ளனர். 

சிற்றாலயங்களில் விநாயகர் மற்றும் ஜேஷ்டாதேவி, முருகன் ஆகியோர் உள்ளனர். சண்டேசர் வழமையான இடத்தில் உள்ளார். கோஷ்டத்தில் இருக்கவேண்டிய நர்த்தன விநாயகரை சிற்றாலயத்தில் வைத்துள்ளனர். 

வடகிழக்கில் ஒரு தகர கொட்டகை மண்டபத்தில் கை கூப்பிய நிலையில் ஒரு அடியாரின் சிலை உள்ளது யாதென தெரியவில்லை. அரங்கன் திருசிற்றம்பலமுடையானின் சிலையாக இருத்தல் கூடும் அருகில் இரு பைரவர்கள் உள்ளனர். புதிய சேர்க்கையாக நவகிரகங்கள் உள்ளன. கோயிலின் தென்புறம் பெரிய குளம் ஒன்றுள்ளது. 

பித்ரு சாபம் நீக்க பகீரதனுக்கு அருளிய ‘கங்கா விசர்ஜன மூர்த்தி’ இங்கே உள்ளதால், இங்கு வந்து சுவாமிக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்து வேண்டிக்கொண்டால், பித்ரு தோஷங்கள் நீங்கிவிடுவதாக ஐதீகம். மேலும், திருப்பாற்கடலில் முதலில் தோன்றிய ஜேஷ்டா தேவி மாந்தன் மாந்தியுடன் உள்ளார் இவரை வழிபாட்டு வாகன விபத்துக்களில் இருந்து நம்மை பாதுகாத்து கொள்ளலாம்.  இப்பெருங்கோயிலை பராமரிப்பதும் ஒரு பெரும் செலவுதான்,
