Somanathar Temple, Perumagalur: Perumagalur is around 15 kms south of Peravurani or around 85 Kms from Tanjavur. 090479 58135 is the contact number of the temple priest. The temple is kept open only for limited hours ( 7 to 9 am and from 5 to 7 pm) as the number of visitors is limited. This was constructed during the Chozha period. The temple is that of Shri Kundalambigai(Sundarambigai) sametha Shri Somanatheswarar. This is one of the Thevara Vaippu Sthalams.
This little known temple was in very bad shape. Though it is under the control of HR&CE Department of Govt of Tamilnadu, not much work is done. Only recently, efforts are taken to completely renovate the temple at an estimated cost of Rs 1 Cr. Those devotees who want to contribute may get in touch with the priest through the mobile number given above.
The Moolavar in this temple is a Swayambu Murthy. There are several unique things about Him. Shiva Lingams are generally made of granite stone and such lingams are round in shape. In temples like Avuyadayar Koil, there is no Shivalingam at all ( only a small brass cup is kept ). In Tiruvarur, ant hill is converted as Lingam (Vanmeeka Lingam). In Thirunallur, a metal lump is converted into Lingam. In Thiruvaiyaru, the sand is converted into lingam ( Prithvi Lingam). In Kedarnath, a rock shaped like the hind portion of a bull, is considered the Lingam. In this temple, the Lingam is made out of white stem of Lotus plant!
The Lingams so made without the use of the chisel of the sculptor are called Vidanga Lingams. This is one such temple. The shape of the Avudayar ( Peetam) is also different- it is square in shape. It is believed that there was a red lotus plant in the middle of the village tank. When the Chozha King’s elephant entered the tank and tried to pluck the flower, the entire water became reddish in colour as if there was blood all over the place.
The King guessed that his elephant must have caused damage to some sub-merged lingam. He dived into the tank and went near the lotus plant and found that the lower portion of the lotus stem was converted into a Lingam! He embraced the Lingam and offered his apology. As the king was wearing his jewels, when he hugged the Lord, the impressions of these jewels were pressed on the delicate lotus stem. These imprints could be seen even today. Later the King constructed the temple and installed both the Lord and the Ambal. Worshipping this Lord on the Trithiyai ( third day after new and full moon days) is considered very auspicious.
Sthala Vruksham is Lotus and the theertham is Lakshmi Theertham. This Theertham is believed to have come from Ganga which was flowing out of the Lord’s head. This is a temple where the parents longing for a female child come and worship for getting daughters. ( Is this the reason for the naming of this place as Perumagalur, as Magal in Tamil means daughter?). Even for successful conduct of marriages and safe delivery of children, prayers are offered here. The priests inform us that they even see Gynaecologists pray in this temple.
As per the sthala puranam, this temple pre-dates even Ramayana period. Readers may be familiar with the Puthra Kaameshti Yagnam performed by King Dasaratha for getting children. A Soma Yagnam has to be done before Puthra Kameshti could be done. Dasaratha requested his guru Vashishta to choose a suitable date and place for conducting the Soma Yagnam. Vasishtar chose a particular date. But on that same day, a Soma Yagnam was already planned in a place in Tanjavur district called Ambar Makalam which was believed to be the best place for Soma Yagnam.
Vasishtar was at his wit’s end. He went to Kailash and met Sage Agasthyar. The Kurumuni suggested this place (Perumagalur) as the best place since Sage Tribhuvan worshipped the Lord here and it was as good as Ambar Makalam. He also suggested that the Lord hereinafter would be known as Somanathar after Dasaratha performed the Soma Yagnam here. Sri Rama remembered this event and hence when He was going towards Sethukarai, worshipped here.
The Lord sits in the central shrine and the Lingam is white coloured as He is made of the white stem of the Lotus plant. Ambal Kunthalambigai is having separate shrine. The pillars in the Mahamandapam contain lot of beautiful carvings. The other deities like Vinayakar, Subramanyar, Bhairavar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahams etc are housed in the prakaram. மண்ணால் ஆனதல்ல இந்த லிங்கம்! தாமரைத் தண்டு லிங்கத்தின் ரகசியமும், பெருமகளூர் கோயிலின் மகா மகிமையும்!1 Min read Published : Jan 22 2026, 09:22 PM IST மண்ணால் ஆனதல்ல இந்த லிங்கம்! தாமரைத் தண்டு லிங்கத்தின் ரகசியமும், பெருமகளூர் கோயிலின் மகா மகிமையும்!Image Credit: Google Photos Lotus stalk Lingam miracle History in Tamil : இக்கோயிலின் மூலவர் சோமநாதர், தாமரைத் தண்டினால் உருவானவர் என்பது ஐதீகம். இதற்கான தழும்புகளை லிங்கத் திருமேனியில் இன்றும் காணலாம்Lotus stalk Lingam miracle History in Tamil : அறிவியலுக்கு சவால் விடும் வகையில் நம் தமிழ்நாட்டில் சிவலிங்கம் தாமரை தண்டினால் உருவாகியுள்ளது இந்த அதிசயத்தை வேறு எங்காவது நாம் பார்க்க முடியாது. சிவலிங்கம் உன் ஒன்று கல்லினால் உருவாக பட்டிருக்கும் இல்லையென்றால் களிமண்ணால் உருவாக்கப் பட்டிருக்கும் ஆனால் இங்கு அதிசயமாக தாமரை தண்டினால் முழுக்க முழுக்க உருவாகியுள்ளது. தஞ்சாவூர் மாவட்டம்பெருமகளூர் சோமநாதர் கோயிலில் தாமரைத் தண்டு லிங்கம் உள்ளது. இந்த இதன் சிறப்புகளையும் வரலாறுகளையும் இந்தத் தொகுப்பில் பார்க்கலாம். வரலாறு: பெருமகளூர் கிராமத்திலுள்ள குளத்தில் சோழ மன்னனின் யானை ஒன்று செந்தாமரையை பறிக்க முயன்ற போது குளம் முழுவதும் செந்நிறமாக மாறியது. இதை அறிந்த மன்னன் நீரை வெளியேற்றும் போது, அடியில் சிவலிங்கம் இருப்பதைக் கண்டான். மகிழ்ச்சியில் சிவலிங்கத்தை இறுக்கமாகக் கட்டித் தழுவி வணங்கினான். இதை அடுத்து லிங்கத்தை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து கோயில் கட்டி, "சோமநாதர்' என பெயர் சூட்டினார். லட்சுமி வாசம் செய்யும் தாமரை மலர்கள் பூத்த குளத்தில், லிங்கம் கிடைத்ததால், இந்த குளத்திற்கு லட்சுமி தீர்த்தம் என பெயர் சூட்டப் பட்டது. லிங்கம் சுயம்புலிங்கமாக உருவானது. தீர்த்தத்தின் சிறப்பு: இக்கோயில் அருகில் உள்ள லட்சுமி தீர்த்தமானது, சிவனது தலையிலிருந்து விழுந்த கங்கையிலிருந்து தோன்றியது ஆகும். இந்த லட்சுமி தீர்த்த்ததிலிருந்து தோன்றிய தாமரைத் தண்டிலிருந்து உருவானது தான் இத்தல லிங்கமாகும். இவ்வுலக மக்களுக்காக, திரிபுவன சித்தரின் தவ வலிமையால் இங்கு சிவனும் அம்மனும் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்டு, கோயில் எழுப்பப்பட்டது. பலன்கள்: இந்த கோயில் சந்திர தோசத்திலிருந்து விலகுவதற்கு ஒரு சிறந்த கோயிலாக கருதப்படுகிறது. குழந்தை வரம் வேண்டி கோயிலுக்கு சென்றால் குழந்தை பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கும் என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது. தீராத நோய் இருந்தால் கூட இந்த லட்சுமி தீர்த்தத்தில் நம் மீது பட்டால் விரைவில் குணமடையும் என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது.
