Kanakkanpalayam Malayala Bhagavathi Amman, the Healer of Incurable Diseases – A Historical Account

The Malayala Bhagavathi Amman, who bestows her blessings in Kanakkanpalayam near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, serves as the guardian deity of her devotees and a remedy for incurable ailments. In this article, we will explore the poignant history and significance of this temple.

A Miraculous Temple History

About a hundred years ago, a merchant from Karnataka was traveling along a mountain path with sacks of turmeric loaded on his bullock cart.  Because the load was unevenly distributed, the bullock was struggling. The merchant, searching for a stone to balance the load, spotted a glittering stone in the mountain forest.

As soon as he placed the stone on the cart, the load became balanced, and the cart moved without difficulty. When he reached the foothills of Kanakkanpalayam near Gobichettipalayam, the glittering stone unexpectedly fell from the cart. However, since there was no change in the weight of the cart, the merchant did not notice and continued on his way.

A few days later, an anthill grew at the spot where the stone had fallen. During the rainy season, when termites emerged from the anthill, a man named 'Valaiyavan', who lived at the foothills, dug into the anthill with a spade to catch them.  He was shocked to see blood flowing from the anthill and described the incident to the villagers.

When the villagers gathered there, one of them became possessed and declared, "I am Malayala Bhagavathi. Perform puja for me at this very spot. I will be the protector of everyone," and then disappeared. From that day onwards, the village elders erected a green canopy and began performing puja for the goddess.  In 1915, arrangements were made to build a temple, which stands today as a magnificent structure. Self-Manifested Deity: In this temple, the Goddess has manifested herself and bestows her blessings.

Miracle of Healing Diseases: Those suffering from incurable diseases stay at the temple for 12 days, light the Nanda Deepam (eternal lamp), and offer prayers.

Herbal Remedy: It is the unwavering belief of the devotees that if one thinks of the Goddess and applies the leaves and herbs gathered from around the temple to their body, any disease will vanish like mist.

Major Festivals

Panguni Festival: Every year, the festival begins on the first Thursday of the Tamil month of Panguni with the 'Poochattu' ceremony (offering of flowers). The fire-walking ceremony by the devotees is a very grand event.

Special Pujas: The Thai Pongal festival, the procession of the Goddess, the 108 lamp puja on Aadi Fridays, and special Amavasya (new moon) worship are celebrated with great fervor.

ஈரோடு மாவட்டம், கோபிசெட்டிபாளையம் அருகே உள்ள கணக்கன்பாளையத்தில் அருள்பாலிக்கும் மலையாள பகவதி அம்மன், பக்தர்களின் காவல் தெய்வமாகவும், தீராத பிணிகளைத் தீர்க்கும் மருந்தாகவும் விளங்குகிறாள். இக்கோயிலின் உருக்கமான தல வரலாற்றையும் சிறப்புகளையும் இந்தப் பதிவில் காண்போம்.

அதிசயம் நிறைந்த தல வரலாறு

சுமார் நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தில் இருந்து ஒரு வியாபாரி தனது மாட்டுப் பொதியில் மஞ்சள் மூடைகளை ஏற்றிக்கொண்டு மலைப்பாதை வழியாக வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். மூடைகளின் பாரம் ஒருபுறம் அதிகமாக இருந்ததால், மாடு தடுமாறிச் சென்றது. பாரத்தைச் சமன் செய்ய ஏதேனும் கல் கிடைக்குமா எனத் தேடிய வியாபாரிக்கு, மலைக்காட்டிற்குள் ஒரு கல் மினுமினுப்புடன் தென்பட்டது.

அந்தக் கல்லை எடுத்து மாட்டுப் பொதியில் வைத்ததும் பாரம் சரியானது; வண்டியும் சிரமமில்லாமல் நகர்ந்தது. கோபி அருகே உள்ள கணக்கன்பாளையம் மலையடிவாரப் பகுதிக்கு வந்தபோது, பொதியில் இருந்த அந்த மினுமினுப்பான கல் எதிர்பாராதவிதமாக கீழே விழுந்துவிட்டது. ஆனால், வண்டியின் பாரத்தில் எந்த மாற்றமும் தெரியாததால் வியாபாரி அதைக் கவனிக்காமல் சென்றுவிட்டார்.

சில நாட்களில் அந்தக் கல் விழுந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு புற்று வளர்ந்துவிட்டது. ஒரு மழைக் காலத்தில் அந்தப் புற்றிலிருந்து ஈசல்கள் வெளிவர, அதைச் சாப்பிடப் பிடிப்பதற்காக மலையடிவாரத்தில் வசித்த 'வளையவன்' என்பவன் அந்தப் புற்றை மண்வெட்டியால் வெட்டினான். அப்போது புற்றிலிருந்து ரத்தம் வடிவதைக் கண்டு அதிர்ச்சியடைந்த அவன், ஊர் மக்களிடம் விவரித்தான்.

மக்கள் அங்கே திரண்டு வந்தபோது, அங்கிருந்த ஒருவருக்கு அருள் வந்து, "நான்தான் மலையாள பகவதி. இதே இடத்தில் வைத்து எனக்குப் பூஜை செய்யுங்கள். எல்லோருக்கும் பாதுகாவலனாக இருப்பேன்" என்று கூறி மறைந்தார். அன்று முதல் ஊர் பெரியவர்கள் பச்சைப் பந்தல் அமைத்து அந்தத் தாய்க்குப் பூஜை செய்யத் தொடங்கினர். 1915-ல் கோயில் கட்டுவதற்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டு, இன்று பிரம்மாண்ட ஆலயமாகத் திகழ்கிறது.

கோயில் சிறப்புகள்

சுயம்பு மூர்த்தி: இக்கோயிலில் அம்மன் சுயம்புவாக உருவெடுத்து அருள்பாலிக்கிறார்.

நோய் தீர்க்கும் அதிசயம்: தீராத நோய்களால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் 12 நாட்கள் கோயிலில் தங்கி, நந்தா தீபம் ஏற்றி வழிபாடு செய்கின்றனர்.

பச்சை மருந்து: எந்த நோயாக இருந்தாலும் அம்மனை நினைத்து, கோயிலைச் சுற்றியுள்ள இலை தழைகளைப் பறித்து உடலில் பூசிக் கொண்டால், பனி போல நோய் நீங்கும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் அசைக்க முடியாத நம்பிக்கை.

முக்கியத் திருவிழாக்கள்

பங்குனி திருவிழா: ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் பங்குனி மாதம் முதல் வியாழக்கிழமை பூச்சாட்டுதலுடன் திருவிழா தொடங்கும். இதில் பக்தர்கள் குண்டம் இறங்குதல் (தீ மிதித்தல்) நிகழ்ச்சி மிகவும் விமரிசையாக நடைபெறும்.

சிறப்பு பூஜைகள்: தை மாதப் பொங்கல் திருவிழா, அம்மன் திருவீதி உலா, ஆடி வெள்ளிக்கிழமைகளில் 108 திருவிளக்கு பூஜை மற்றும் அமாவாசை சிறப்பு வழிபாடுகள் சிறப்பாக நடைபெறுகின்றன.
