Kurugai Kavalappar Temple: This temple is also known as Veeranarayana Perumal Temple or Guruvalapparkoil ( the absence of difference between G and K could be one of the reasons or the presence of the Gurus could be another reason for the last name ). This temple is not known to many outside the district. It is just one Km from Gangaikonda Chozhapuram and one could easily take a bus from Kumbakonam or Jayamkondam.
Tamil readers might be familiar with Shri Nathamuni Swamigal. He had collected and compiled the Naalayira Divya Prabhandam ( the 4000 verses in praise of Lord Vishnu) and was also the author of Yogarahasya and Nyayatatva. His disciple was Shri Kurugai Kaavalappan. Shri Nathamuni Swamigal’s grandson was Shri Alavandar who was directed by his Guru Shri Manakkal Nambi to seek the guidance of Shri Kaavalappan to get advanced training in Yogarahasya ( the Mantra that empowers one to experience the Lord at Vaikunta). Accordingly Shri Alavandar came to this place. When Alavandar came to this place, Kaavalappan was in deep meditation in the Brindhavanam of the temple. Hence Alavandar stood outside.
Suddenly, Kaavalappan came out of the meditation and asked whether someone has come from Sottai Clan ( the clan to which Nathamuni Swamigal belonged ). When the wonderstuck Alavandar replied in the affirmative, Kaavalappan explained that the Lord Himself had seen someone over his shoulders and this could have happened only if there was someone from Nathamuni’s clan nearby. Alavandar requested him to initiate him in Yogarahasya. Kaavalappan decided that the Poosam day of Thai masam ( Jan-Feb) was auspicious for the Upadesam and advised Alavandar to come on that day. Incidentally, that also happened to be the day when he would attain Samadhi.
Since Alavandar had ample time before the appointed day, he visited Srirangam and saw the Arayarsevai commenced by his grandfather. During the programme, he saw the Ananthapura Nagara Pasuram. Impressed with the description of the beautiful Ananthapadmanaba Swamy, he immediately left for that place. When he was having darshan of the Perumal there, he realised that it was the Poosam day of Thai month. Since Thiruvananthapuram was very far away, he could not reach Kurugai before Kaavalappan attained Samadhi. Hence he lost the opportunity of learning Yogarahasya which was lost for ever.
Since Kurugai Kaavalappan was the only disciple to be initiated into Yogarahasya, he was always in meditation and hence this place came to be called Kurugai Kaavalappan Koil. Over a period of time, the prefix was dropped and the place came to be called Kaavalappan temple. The presiding deity here is Shri Veeranarayana Perumal. The Swamy is a 11 ft tall idol with the Thayars on His side. The name of the Lord is the same as the one in Kattumannarkoil, the birthplace of Nathamuni. Utsavamurthy is Dwarakanathar. Maragathavalli Thayar is having a separate shrine. There is a separate shrine for all the three gurus- Kaavalappan, Nathamuni and Alavandar. The original sanctum sanctorum is believed to have been constructed by Alavandar and the subsequent additions in the form of the two prakarams of later period ( perhaps 11th Century ). There are two Rajagopurams at the eastern entrance. The temple was celebrating Annual Brahmotsavam and Float fetival in a grand manner for long. In the recent past, they had been discontinued and were revived only in 2014 after the renovation of the temple. The temple tank was also spruced up and is filled with water. Devotees who visit this temple also visit Chokkapallam, ½ km from Gangaikondachozhapuram and 2 Kms from Kurugai, where Nathamuni Swamigal attained the Lotus Feet of the Lord. குருவாலப்பர் கோயில்:
குருகை காவலரப்பர் திருக்கோயில் என்பது மருவி, குருவாலப்பர் கோயில் என்று தற்போது வழங்கப்படுகிறது குருகை காவலப்பர், வைணவ ஆச்சாரியரான நாதமுனிகளின் சீடர்களில் ஒருவராவார். இவர் நாதமுனிகளிடம் இருந்து யோகசாஸ்திரத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டவர். நாலாயிர திவ்விய பிரபந்தத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள பேயாழ்வார் அருளிச் செய்த மூன்றாம் திருவந்தாதியில் குருகைக்காவலப்பர் அருளிய தனியன் உள்ளது.

//சீராரும் மாடத் திருக்கோவ லூரதனுள்
காரார் கருமுகிலைக் காணப்புக்கு-ஓராத்
திருக்கண்டேன் என்றுரைத்த சீரான் கழலே
உரைக்கண்டாய் நெஞ்சே உகந்து.//
இராஜேந்திரசோழன் வடநாட்டிலிருந்த நாதமுனிகளைத் தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வரவழைத்து கங்கைகொண்டசோழபுரம் என்னும் தலைநகரை நிருமாணித்தான்.அவரைத் தனது ராஜ ஆலோசகராகக் கொண்டான். இராஜேந்திரசோழ்னின் மனைவியின் முயற்சியால் இத்திருக்கோயில் உருவாயிற்று என்பார்கள். குருவாலப்பர்கோயில் என்னும் ஊர் தனது ஆட்சிக்குள் 85 சிற்றூர் மற்றும் ஜமீன்களைக் கொண்டு விளங்கியிருக்கிறது. கங்கைகொண்டசோழபுரம் என்ற ஊரும் இதனுள் அடக்கம்.

மகாலட்சுமி அவதாரம் பண்ணிப் பெருமாளைத் தவம் செய்து
விவாகம் பண்ணிய தலம்.

வைகாசி விசாகத்தன்று தேர்த்திருவிழா நடைபெற்று வந்திருக்கிறது. நீண்டகாலமாக கவனிப்பாரின்றி இருந்த இத்திருக்கோயிலுக்கு கும்பாபிஷேகம் செய்ய ஏற்பாடுகள் நடந்துவருகின்றன.நீண்டகாலம் இங்கு முன்பு பணியாற்றிய முதுபெரும்பட்டாச்சாரியாருக்குப் பிறகு தற்போது திருவரங்கத்தில் இருந்து வந்துள்ள திருமிகு.கண்ணன் பட்டாச்சாரியார் பொறுப்பேற்று கோயில் பணிகளைச் சிறப்பாகச் செய்துவருகிறார்.நாங்கள் முதன்முதலில் இங்கு சென்றபோது முன்பிருந்த பட்டாச்சாரியார் அடிக்கடி இத்தலத்துக்கு வாருங்கள் என்று அன்புடன் கூறினார், அதில் இருந்து ஒவ்வோராண்டும் போய் வருகிறோம்.
