Valaiyanmadevi Vedanarayana Perumal Temple
There are many temples in our country associated with the ten avatars taken by Lord Vishnu. We worship some of these important temples. One such temple is the Valaiyanmadevi Vedanarayana Perumal Temple.
Lord Vishnu took the Varaha avatar and annihilated Hiranyaksha. Hiranyaksha's daughters, Manimalai and Muthumalai, knowing the glory of Lord Vishnu, performed penance towards him.
As a result, both, having received Vishnu's grace, transformed into sacred rivers and flow near the Srimushnam Kshetra under the names Manimuktha River and Shveta River, bestowing blessings upon devotees.

Temple History
The great sage Katyayana insulted Guru (Jupiter) due to his arrogance. As a result, he was cursed. To be freed from this curse, Katyayana came to this place, which was called Varaha Vanam, and performed penance. Pleased by his rigorous penance, Lord Bhoovaraha Swami granted him a divine vision, freed him from the curse, and asked, "What boon do you desire?"
To this, Katyayana replied, "Goddess Lakshmi is immensely compassionate towards all living beings in this world. I wish to have that compassion embodied as my daughter, whom I can raise and cherish. As a reward for raising her, you, who protect the world, should come and bless me as my son-in-law."
Knowing that the world would benefit from Katyayana's wish, Lord Vishnu agreed. He blessed him, saying that he could obtain Goddess Lakshmi as his daughter by performing the Putrakameshti Yagna.
Accordingly, Sage Katyayana bathed in the Pavana Theertham, built a hermitage there, and, according to the prescribed rituals, on the full moon day of the month of Avani, amidst the chanting of the Vedas, he began the Putrakameshti Yagna.
At the conclusion of the yagna, Goddess Lakshmi incarnated as a beautiful child, like a golden statue. Known by the name 'Ambujavalli' (devotees also say she has the names Katyayani and Kamalavalli), the Goddess grew up with grace and splendor, constantly devoted to Lord Vishnu. She also engaged herself in divine service.
Seeing Ambujavalli's devotion and virtuous conduct, and knowing that the opportune time had arrived for her to be united with him, Lord Bhoovaraha Perumal desired to marry her and sent Brahma to Sage Katyayana to ask for her hand in marriage.
The sage did not forget the promise he had made to Lord Vishnu. However, he avoided arranging the marriage to the Lord because he would have to be separated from his daughter. But Ambujavalli was resolute, vowing, "I will not even think of anyone other than Lord Bhoovaraha in my heart."
Even after many years had passed, her resolve did not wauld. Ambujavalli did not agree to leave her parents and marry the Lord through a Gandharva marriage (a marriage by mutual consent).
Finally, her mother's unwavering determination prevailed. Sage Katyayana arranged her marriage to Lord Bhoovaraha. The legend of this sacred place says that because all the gods gathered and worshipped Lord Vishnu and the Goddess, this place also became a place for seeking blessings for marriage.
Lord Bhoovaraha, for the sake of his marriage, appeared in a beautiful form as Lord Vedanarayana Perumal. During the wedding, Lord Bhoovaraha presented nine precious bangles. Because Goddess Ambujavalli wore those bangles, this village came to be known by the auspicious name Valaiyanmadevi.
In the sanctum sanctorum of this ancient temple, Lord Vedanarayana Perumal is enshrined in a seated posture, accompanied by Goddess Sridevi and Bhoodevi.

Valaiyanmadevi Katyayani Devi
Theertham: Pavana Theertham. Vimanam: Pavana Vimanam. Sthala Vriksham: Punnai tree. The Chithirai Brahmotsavam and Vaikasi Thirukalyana Utsavam are considered very special here by the devotees of this town.
Special pujas are performed here on the Rohini, Hastham, Thiruvonam, Uthiram, and Revathi star days that occur every month, and on Saturdays in the month of Purattasi.
It is believed that bathing in the Pavana Theertham here, praying to Bhuvaraha Perumal and Ambujavalli Thayar, and distributing the offerings will ensure the successful completion of desired tasks and the attainment of a desired spouse.
Since this is the place where Perumal married the Goddess as he wished, the people of this town believe that praying here will grant their devotees the boon of marrying the person they desire. வளையன்மாதேவி திருத்தலத்தில் தவம் செய்த காத்யாயனரின் வேண்டுதலால் உலகம் நன்மையடையப் போவதை அறிந்திருந்த பகவான் விஷ்ணு அதற்கு இசைந்தார். 'புத்திர காமேஷ்டி யாகம் செய்தால் திருமகளை மகளாகப் பெறலாம்' என்று சொல்லி அருளினார்.
பகவான் விஷ்ணு எடுத்த தசாவதாரங்களோடு தொடர்புடைய தலங்கள் நம் தேசத்தில் அநேகம் உள்ளன. அவற்றில் சில முக்கியமான தலங்களை நாம் வழிபட்டு வருகிறோம். அப்படி ஓர் ஆலயம்தான் வளையமாதேவி வேதநாராயண பெருமாள் திருக்கோயில்.
பகவான் வராக அவதாரம் எடுத்து இரண்யாட்சனைச் சம்ஹாரம் செய்தார். இரண்யாட்சனின் மகள்களான மணிமாலையும், முத்துமாலையும் பகவான் விஷ்ணுவின் மகிமையை அறிந்து அவரை நோக்கித் தவம் செய்தனர்.
அதன் பலனாக விஷ்ணுவின் அருள்பெற்ற இருவரும் புண்ணிய நதிகளாக மாறி ஸ்ரீ முஷ்ணம் சேத்திரத்தை ஒட்டி மணிமுக்தா நதி, சுவேதா நதி என்கிற பெயர்களோடு பாய்ந்து பக்தர்களுக்கும் அருள் செய்துவருகின்றனர்.
அவற்றில் மணிமுத்தா நதிக்கரை அருகே அமைந்ததுள்ளது வளையன்மாதேவி திருத்தலம்.
தலபுராணம்
காத்யாயனர் என்னும் மகரிஷி குருபகவானைத் தன் ஆணவத்தால் அவமதித்தார். அதனால் அவருக்குச் சாபம் உண்டானது. அந்தச் சாபம் நீங்க காத்யாயனர் வராக வனம் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்ட இந்தத் தலத்துக்கு வந்து தவம் செய்தார். அவரின் கடுமையான தவத்தைக் கண்டு மனம் மகிழ்ந்த பூவராக சுவாமி திருக்காட்சி அருளி சாபவிமோசனம் தந்ததோடு, 'வேண்டும் வரம் என்ன' என்றும் கேட்டார்.
அதற்கு காத்யாயனர், "திருமகளே இந்த உலகில் சகல உயிர்களின் மீதும் பெரும் கருணை கொண்டவள். அந்தக் கருணையை நான் மகளாகப் பெற்றுத் தூக்கிச் சுமக்க வேண்டும். அவளை வளர்த்ததன் பயனாக உலகத்தைக் காக்கும் நீங்களே எனக்கு மருமகனாகவும் வந்து அருள வேண்டும்" என்று வேண்டிக்கொண்டார்.
காத்யாயனரின் வேண்டுதலால் உலகம் நன்மையடையப் போவதை அறிந்திருந்த பகவான் விஷ்ணு அதற்கு இசைந்தார். 'புத்திர காமேஷ்டி யாகம் செய்தால் திருமகளை மகளாகப் பெறலாம்' என்று சொல்லி அருளினார்.
அதன்படி, காத்யாயன ரிஷி, பாவண தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி, அங்கேயே பர்ணசாலை அமைத்துக் கொண்டு, நியமப்படி ஆவணி மாத பௌர்ணமி அன்று வேதங்கள் முழங்க, புத்திர காமேஷ்டி யாகத்தைத் தொடங்கினார்.
யாகத்தின் நிறைவில் தங்கப்பதுமை போல திருமகள் அழகிய குழந்தையாக அவதரித்தாள். `அம்புஜவல்லி' என்ற திருநாமத்தோடு (காத்யாயினி, கமலவல்லி என்ற திருநாமங்களும் உண்டு என்கிறார்கள் பக்தர்கள்) சீரும் சிறப்புமாக வளர்ந்து வந்த தாயார், இடையறாது திருமாலின் மீது பக்தி கொண்டிருந்தாள். மேலும் இறைப்பணிகளில் தன்னை ஈடுபடுத்தியும்கொண்டாள்.
அம்புஜவல்லியின் பக்தியும் ஒழுங்கும் கண்டு அவரைச் சேரவேண்டிய தகுந்த வேளை வந்ததை அறிந்த பூவராக பெருமாள் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ள விரும்பி, பெண் கேட்டு பிரம்மனை காத்யாயன ரிஷியிடம் அனுப்பினார்.
பெருமாளுக்குக் கொடுத்த வாக்கை முனிவர் மறக்கவில்லை. எனினும் தன் மகளைப் பிரிய நேரிடுமே என்று பெருமானுக்குத் திருமணம் செய்து வைப்பதைத் தவிர்த்தார். ஆனால், `பூவராகப் பெருமாளைத் தவிர வேறு ஒருவரை மனத்தாலும் நினையேன்' என்று உறுதியாக இருந்தாள் அம்புஜவல்லி.
காலம் பல கடந்த பிறகும் அவள் உறுதி குலையவே இல்லை. பெற்றவரைத் தவிக்கவிட்டு, பெருமாளை காந்தர்வ மணம் புரியவும் அம்புஜவல்லி ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை.
இறுதியில் தாயாரின் வைராக்கியம் வென்றது. அவளை பூவராகருக்குத் திருமணம் செய்து வைத்தார் காத்யாயன ரிஷி. தேவர்கள் எல்லோரும் கூடி திருமால்-தாயாரை வணங்கியதால் அந்தத் தலம் திருமண வேண்டுதல் தலமாகவும் மாறியது என்கிறது இந்தத் தலத்தின் புராணம்.
பூவராகரும் தனது திருமணத்தின் பொருட்டு வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாளாக அழகிய வடிவுடன் காட்சி தந்தார். திருமணத்தின்போது நவரத்தின வளையல்களைச் சீராகக் கொடுத்தார் பூவராகர். அந்த வளையலை அம்புஜவல்லித் தாயார் அணிந்ததால், இந்த ஊருக்கே வளையன்மாதேவி என்ற திருப்பெயர் உண்டானதாம்.
பழைமையான இந்த ஆலயத்தின் கருவறையில் ஸ்ரீதேவி பூதேவி சமேதராக வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் வீற்றிருக்கும் திருக்கோலத்தில் எழுந்தருளி உள்ளார்.
மேலும் இங்கே எழுந்தருளி இருக்கும் தெய்வத் திருமேனிகள்; உற்சவர் வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலம், நித்ய உற்சவர் வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் நின்ற திருக்கோலம், காளீயமர்த்தனர் - உற்சவர், ஆதி நாராயணப் பெருமாள் - வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலம், ஸ்ரீபூவராகப் பெருமாள் மூலவர் வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலம், பிராட்டியுடன் சக்கரவர்த்தித் திருமகன், இளையபெருமாள்,

தீர்த்தம் பாவண தீர்த்தம். விமானம் பாவண விமானம். தல விருட்சம் புன்னை. சித்திரை பிரம்மோற்சவமும், வைகாசி திருக்கல்யாண உற்சவமும் இங்கு வெகு விசேஷம் என்கிறார்கள் இந்த ஊர் பக்தர்கள்.
மாதம்தோறும் வரும் ரோகிணி, அஸ்தம், திருவோணம், உத்திரம், ரேவதி ஆகிய நட்சத்திர தினங்கள் மற்றும் புரட்டாசி மாத சனிக்கிழமைகளில் இங்கு விசேஷ ஆராதனைகள் நடைபெறும்.
இங்குள்ள பாவண தீர்த்தத்தில் நீராடி, பூவராகப் பெருமாளை, அம்புஜவல்லித் தாயாரை வேண்டி நைவேத்தியம் விநியோகித்தால் நினைத்த காரியங்கள் நல்லபடியாக நிறைவேறும். விரும்பிய வரன் அமையும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.
பெருமாள் தான் விரும்பியபடி தாயாரை மணந்துகொண்ட தலம் என்பதால் இங்கு வந்து வேண்டிக்கொள்ள, வேண்டியவரைத் திருமணம் செய்துகொள்ளும் வரத்தைத் தன் பக்தர்களுக்கும் அருள்கிறார் என்கிறார்கள் இந்த ஊர் மக்கள்.
வாழ்வில் நல்ல துணை அமையவும் மனதின் விருப்பங்கள் நிறைவேறவும் ஒருமுறை வளையன்மாதேவி சென்று வேதநாராயண பெருமாளை வழிபட்டு வருவோம்.
