Veda Narayana Perumal Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located at Kodikulam near Yanaimalai in Madurai District of Tamilnadu. The temple is situated in an isolated beautiful environment of hill and pond in the backdrop of Yanaimalai. The Temple is believed to be built during 13^th Century AD. The Temple is located at northern most corner of the Yanaimalai hill. This place was called as Jotishkudi in olden days. Pillai Lokacharyar attained salvation here.

Legends

Veda Narayana Perumal:

Legend goes that once two demons by name Madhu and Kaidaba stole the Vedas or Holy Scriptures from Brahma thus the entire process of creation came to stand still. Maha Vishnu destroyed the demons and rescued the Vedas but did not give them to Brahma. Transforming himself as a Brahmin with a single head Brahma performed intensive penance to God Vishnu who appeared as Hayagriva Murthy and gave the Vedas back to him. Thus, the God is called as Veda Narayana Perumal here.

Pandavas, during their exile, are said to have come here and had the big rocks at this place as their sleep beds.

History

Thungavanam Kshetram:

In the 14^th century AD, it is believed that this temple slid into ruins under the reign of Maravarman Kulasekara Pandyan I and was later renovated by Sundara Pandyan, a Chieftain. Inscriptions at the Thiru Mohur Divya Desam refer to this place as Thungavanam Kshetram on the banks of Brahmma Theertham.

Pillai Lokacharyar attained Salvation here:

There was a saint managing the Srirangam temple named Nampillai praised by the Vaishnava world as Lokacharyar. He had a devout disciple Vallal Vadakku Thiru Veedhi Pillai who was blessed with a male child in 1205 in Aipasi (October-November) on Tiruvonam star day. He named his child as Pillai Lokacharyar in remembrance of his Guru. The child grew in learning and was devoted to the service of the Lord.

During the Muslim Invasion of Srirangam, Muslims targeted the Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple. Pillai Lokacharyar was 118 then.  Despite his age, he wanted to save the procession deity Azhagia Manavalan. He covered the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity by a wall, installed some idols there and carried the real procession deities in a covered palanquin and moved towards south with his disciples. He came to Kodikulam enduring untold sufferings. He worshipped Lord Vedanarayana, hid Azhagia Manavalar and performed pujas.

The invaders came to this place too. Lokacharyar took the Perumal and reached the top of the hill. When he came down holding the plants and trees for support, he fell down. Even at such a critical time, Lokacharyar held Perumal closely on his chest to avoid any injury to him and fell down with his back to the ground. He was seriously injured. He lived just three days then and attained salvation on Jeshta Suddha Dwadasi in the month of Aani (June-July). Small creatures as flies and ants that had his touch also attained salvation.

His disciples used the garlands and the vastras on Lord for his funeral and buried him there itself. They stayed there for a month and completed the rituals as per rules. They returned to Srirangam after 48 years with the procession deity. Later, a separate shrine was built for Pillai Lokacharyar in Kodikulam. On Tiruvonam star days, being the birth of the saint, special pujas are performed in the shrine. 

The Temple

Presiding Deity is called as Vedanarayana Perumal. Lord Vedanarayana is in a small shrine alone without his consorts. Brahmma performed penance here as a Brahmin with one head. He is seen near Perumal. The cave where the procession deity Azhagia Manavalan was hidden earlier from invasion, has the feet of the Lord now. With a view to keep the sacredness of the water of the Brahmma Theertham clean and free from pollution, no one is permitted to bathe or clean their hands and legs in this tank. Devotees strongly believe that if they take this water and mix it while bathing, skin problems are completely solved.

Inscriptions

A thirteenth century inscription (Kulasekara Pandya, A.D. 1288) engraved on the rock by the side of the tank mentions about the existence of a temple garden in the name of Alagiyamanavalan.

Festivals

Vaikunda Ekadasi in December-January and Aipasi Thiruvonam star day being the birth day of Pillai Lokachacharya in October-November are celebrated in a grand scale. On other monthly Tiruvonam star days also special pujas are performed in the shrine. During hunting festival Kalamega Perumal used to visit this place and took part in the celebration. 

Prayers

Devotees strongly believe that if they take this water and mix it while bathing, skin problems are completely solved. Devotees perform Tirumanjanam and donate vastras to Perumal.

மதுரை - சென்னை நெடுஞ்சாலையில் 13 கி.மீ தொலைவில் உள்ள கொடிக்குளம் விலக்கு என்ற இடத்திலிருந்து இரண்டு கி.மீ தூரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது கொடிக்குளம் வேதநாராயண பெருமாள் கோவில். இக்கோவில் யானைமலை யோக நரசிம்மர் கோவிலுக்கு 2 கி.மீ. அருகாமையில் உள்ளது.

புராணத்தின் படி, மது மற்றும் கைடபர் என்ற இரண்டு அசுரர்கள் பிரம்மாவிடமிருந்து வேதங்களைத் திருடிவிட்டதால், படைப்புத் தொழில் நின்று போனது. மகா விஷ்ணு அசுரர்களை அழித்து வேதங்களை மீட்டார். ஆனால் பிரம்மாவிடம் கொடுக்கவில்லை. விஷ்ணுவிடம் வேதங்களை பெற்று மீண்டும் படைப்புத் தொழில் செய்ய பிரம்மா இத்தலத்தில் மனித வடிவில் அந்தணராக, ஒரு தலையுடன் வந்து தவமிருந்தார். பெருமாள் அவருக்கு ஹயக்ரீவ மூர்த்தியாக காட்சி தந்து வேதங்களை திருப்பி தந்தார்.

அப்போது பிரம்மா பெருமாளிடம், சுயரூபத்தில் தரிசனம் தரும்படி வேண்டவே அவர் நாராயணராக காட்சி தந்தருளினார். எனவே, மகா விஷ்ணு வேதநாராயணன்' என்றும் பெயர் பெற்றார்

மூலவர் வேதநாராயணன், கருவறையில் தாயார்கள் இல்லாமல் எழுந்தருளி உள்ளார். வேதநாராயணப் பெருமாள் அருகில், அந்தணராக வந்து தவம் செய்த பிரம்மா ஒரு தலையுடன், பெருமாளை வணங்கியபடி இருப்பது வித்தியாசமான காட்சியாகும்.

ஸ்ரீரங்கம் உற்சவர் நம் பெருமாள் 48 ஆண்டு காலம் மறைந்திருந்த தலம்

பதினான்காம் நூற்றாண்டில் அந்நியர்கள் படையெடுத்து வந்தபோது, ஸ்ரீரங்கம் உற்சவரான நம்பெருமாளை இக்கோவிலுக்கு அருகில் உள்ள குகையில்தான் 48 ஆண்டுகள் மறைத்து வைத்திருந்தார்கள். ஸ்ரீரங்கம் உற்சவர் வைக்கப்பட்டிருந்த குகையில் தற்போது, பெருமாள் பாதம் இருக்கிறது.

தோல் நோய்களை தீர்க்கும் பிரம்ம தீர்த்தத்து நீர்

இக்கோவில் தீர்த்தமான பிரம்ம தீர்த்தத்தின் நீரை வீட்டிற்கு கொண்டு சென்று தண்ணீரில் கலந்து குளித்தால் தோல் வியாதிகள் குணமாகும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் நம்பிக்கை.
