Vatthalai Patala Ishwarar Temple is located 21 km from Trichy on the way to Namakkal (2 km before Gunaseela). The name of the goddess is Patala Ishwari. It is a place worshipped by the Saptha Rishis.

Once, when Lord Shani tried to catch Lord Shiva at 7:30 AM, Lord Shiva hid in the underworld to escape from Lord Shani. That is why the Lord of this temple got the name Patala Ishwarar. Accordingly, to see the source of this temple, we have to go down several steps from the ground level. Lord Shani, who came to catch Lord Shiva, appears in a sitting position opposite the source to the left.

This is a place of reparation to be worshipped to get rid of the evils of Saturn, such as Ezharai Saturn, Ashtamathu Saturn, Kandasani, Arthasthama Saturn, etc. Therefore, this place is considered a place on par with Thirunallar. Those who have suffered great losses due to the effects of Saturn can recover from that loss if they worship at this place. Devotees believe that after visiting this place, when they climb the steps and go up, all the evils of Saturn will be removed and our lives will progress to the next stage.

திருச்சியில் இருந்து நாமக்கல் செல்லும் வழியில் 21 கி.மீ தொலைவில் (குணசீலத்திற்கு முன்னால் 2 கி.மீ ), அமைந்துள்ளது வாத்தலை பாதாள ஈஸ்வரர் கோவில். இறைவியின் திருநாமம் பாதாள ஈஸ்வரி. சப்த ரிஷிகள் வழிபட்ட தலம்.

ஒரு சமயம் சனி பகவான் சிவபெருமானை ஏழரை நாழிகை நேரம் பிடிக்க முற்பட்ட போது, சனியிடம் இருந்து தப்பிக்க சிவபெருமான் பாதாளத்தில் ஒளிந்து கொண்டார். அதனால் தான், இத்தலத்து இறைவனுக்கு பாதாள ஈஸ்வரர் என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. அதற்கு ஏற்றார்போல் இத்தலத்து மூலவரை தரிசிக்க, நாம் தரைமட்டத்தில் இருந்து பல படிகள் கீழே இறங்கி செல்ல வேண்டும். சிவபெருமானை பிடிக்க வந்த சனி பகவான் மூலவருக்கு எதிரில் இடதுபுறம் அமர்ந்த கோலத்தில் காட்சி தருகிறார்.

ஏழரை சனி, அஷ்டமத்து சனி, கண்டச்சனி, அர்த்தாஷ்டம சனி முதலிய சனி தோஷங்கள் நீங்க வழிபட வேண்டிய பரிகாரத் தலம் இது. அதனால் இத்தலம் திருநள்ளாறுக்கு இணையான தலம் என்று போற்றப்படுகிறது.சனிபகவனால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு பெரிய இழப்பை சந்தித்தவர்கள், இந்த தலத்தில் வழிபட்டால் அந்த இழப்பிலிருந்து மீண்டு வரலாம். இந்த தலத்தை தரிசனம் செய்த பிறகு படி ஏறி மேலே செல்லும் போது முழுவதும் சனி தோஷம் நிவர்த்தி ஆகி நமது வாழ்க்கை அடுத்த கட்டம் நோக்கி முன்னேறும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் நம்பிக்கை.
