Introduction

The Pillaivayal Kaliyamman Temple, located in Paiyur Village in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The temple is located in the midst of green fields (vayal), which is why the Goddess is named “Pillaivayal Kaliyamman.”

Puranic Significance

Origin and Preservation:

About 500 years ago, the people of Paiyur village were facing difficulties and sought the protection and blessings of Goddess Kaliyamman.
In response to their prayers and devotion, the Goddess manifested herself to help the villagers in their time of need.
To protect the idol of the deity from destruction during the Muslim invasions, the residents of Paiyur village hid the idol in a well.
The idol remained hidden in the well for many years until it was rediscovered when the well was being desilted.
The idol was subsequently installed in the temple and became the deity of the village.
The people believe that the Goddess is now their protector, and they continue to worship her with devotion.

The Pillaivayal Kaliyamman Temple is around 500 years old.
The temple is situated in Paiyur Pillaivayal village in the Sivaganga District of Tamil Nadu.

Historical Artifacts:

Officials from the Museum department conducted a study on the temple and the idol of the deity. They confirmed that the idol was made in Andhra around 500 years ago.

Maintenance and Devotion:

The temple is in need of proper maintenance, and the local community considers this a test of their devotion and commitment to the Goddess.

Beliefs

The importance of the temple is that Goddess blesses people with child boon. Devotees firmly believe if they pray here, they will have the child next year. Women awaiting marriage pray here each Friday lighting lamps to the deity so that their wedding materializes earlier. Also the lamp lighting is followed for protection of children born and to be born.

Festivals

On the first Friday in the month of Aadi (July) each year, the Kappukattu and Theemidhi (walking on fire pit) festival begins and ends on the last Friday with flower raining (Poo choridal) is celebrated in the temple. Also special pujas are performed each month.

*வயல் காளியம்மன்*

சிவகங்கை சீமை பெண்ணின் பெருமை போற்றும் மாவட்டம். சிவகங்கை சீமை என்றாலே வீர மங்கை வேலுநாச்சியார் என்ற பெருமையும் உண்டு .

இங்கு காவல் தெய்வமாக அமைந்திருக்கும் பிள்ளை வரம் தரும் பிள்ளைவயல் காளியம்மன் திருக்கோயில் சுமார் 2000 ஆண்டு பழமை வாய்ந்தது. நவாப் காலத்தில் கிணறு தோண்டும் போது தோன்றிய சிலை தான் இன்று இவ்வுரு மக்கள் தங்களின் காவல் தெய்வமாக வணங்குகின்றனர்.

பிள்ளை வயல் காளியம்மன் கோவில் செவ்வாய் வெள்ளி மட்டுமின்றி தினமும் ஏராளமான பக்தர்கள் இங்கு வந்து செல்கின்றனர். குறிப்பாக பிள்ளை வரம் வேண்டி ஏராளமான பெண்கள் வந்து அங்குள்ள மரத்தில் தொட்டில் கட்டி குழந்தை வரம் கேட்பார்கள்.

அம்மனும் அவர்கள் கோரிக்கையை குறித்த காலத்தில் நிறைவேற்றி வைப்பார். எனவே அனைவராலும் பிள்ளை வரம் தரும் காளி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். மேலும் தொழில் சிறக்க வேண்டுவோரும் புதிய தொழில் துவங்குவோரும் அம்மனிடம் வேண்டுதல் செய்து தொழில் தொடங்குவர். இது போன்று பக்தர்களின் வேண்டுதலை நிறைவேற்றுவதால் வேண்டும் வரம் தரும் காளியம்மன் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறார்.

*பூச்சொரிதல் விழா*

பூச்சொரிதல் விழாவானது கடந்த 62 வருடங்களாக ஆண்டு தோறும் ஆனி மாதம் நடப்பதுண்டு. விழாவில் பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான பக்தர்கள் வந்து அம்மனை தரிசிப்பர்.

வீட்டிற்கு வீடு புத்தாடை அணிந்து பூத்தட்டுடன் கோவிலுக்கு செல்வது கண் கொள்ளாக் காட்சியாகும். மேலும் பெண்கள் பொங்கல் வைத்தல், மாவிளக்கு எடுத்தல், கரும்பு தொட்டில் சுமத்தல், பூக்குழி இறங்குதல் போன்ற நேர்த்தி கடன்களை செலுத்துவர்.

ஆனி பிறந்தாலே சிவகங்கை நகர் விழாகோலம் பூண்டு விடும். ஓவ்வொரு வீட்டினரும் விழாவிற்காக உறவினர்களை அழைப்பதுண்டு. நகரை காவல் காக்கும் தெய்வமாக காளியம்மன் விளங்குகிறார். வயல் காடாக இப்பகுதி இருந்ததால் பிள்ளை வயல் காளியம்மன் என்றழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

முன்பு விவசாய நிலங்களில் கிணறு தோண்டும் பழக்கம் இருந்தது. இங்கு ஒரு குழவினர் கிணறு தோண்டினர். ஒரு இடத்தில் தோண்டும் போது ரத்தம் பீறிட்டு வந்தது. விவசாயிகள் அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தனர்.

அந்த நிலத்தில் அம்மன் சிலை கிடைத்தது. அதை தொடர்ந்து சப்த கன்னியர் சிலையும் தோன்றியது. அச்சிலைகளை பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிப்பட்டனர். இந்து அறநிலையத்துறை கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இயங்கி வருகிறது.

உலகில் காளியம்மன் கோவில் உடன் சப்த கன்னியர்கள் இருக்கும் ஒரே காளி கோவில் என்ற பெருமையை வாய்ந்தது. காளியம்மன் எப்போதும் தன் மீது வெயில் மழை படுமாறும் தான் அமைந்திருக்கும்.

அப்படி தன்மீது கூரை அமைந்து மழை, வெயிலினை தடுத்தால் தன் சக்தியை கொண்டு கூரையை தூக்கி எரிந்து விடுவதாக ஐதீகம். ஆடி மாதம் வெள்ளி கிழமைகளிலும் மார்கழி மாதமும் அம்மன் மடியில் குழந்தை இருப்பது போல் அலங்காரம் செய்து அம்மனுக்கு சிறப்பு பூஜைகள் செய்து வழிபடுகின்றனர். இப்பூஜை செய்யும் போது குழந்தை இல்லாதவர்கள் வந்து அம்மனை சரித்து செல்கின்றனர்.
