Siddhargadu is a forest area between the villages of Keezhacheval and Sudthamalli on the banks of the Thamirabarani. This is one of the places worshipped by Parashurama. This place has many names like Siddhargadu, Vedapuri, Rishipuri, Siddhargadu, Siddhavalli, Siddhamalli, Sudthamalli. Eighteen Siddhars, sages and gods have worshipped in this temple, which is about 5 thousand years old.
Sage Sutama, a disciple of Vedavyasa, has sung the glory of this temple in the Thamirabarani Mahatmiyam. It is said in it that if you worship the Lord in this temple on the night of Bharani in the month of Panguni, you will get all the benefits.
Once upon a time, Goddess Saraswati was cursed by sage Durvasa. To get rid of that curse, Goddess Saraswati came to Siddhargadu with Brahma to do penance. For her worship, Vishwakarma, the divine sculptor, designed a manik lingam. That lingam graced the rock there as a swayambu murti. The lingam formed in Siddhargad is called ‘Sitteeswarar’.
In the early days, Agasthiyar had worshipped this deity. He came to Pothikaimalai to balance the world. He was eager to worship Lord Shiva, the Lord of Kailash there. Every day, he used to go on a pilgrimage to the banks of the Thamirabarani river. Then, standing at this place, he prayed, “O deity, I want to worship you as you are on Kailash.”
Then the deity whom Saraswati Devi had worshipped appeared to Agasthiyar. Immediately, Agasthiyar asked in surprise, “Oh Lord! You are Kailashanath. You live in the coolness of the snowy mountain. Have you appeared here too?”
Then a voice came from the body saying, “If I exist there (Kailayam), I exist here also.” Therefore, Agastya named this Lord ‘Angundeeswarar’ and worshipped him.
On the auspicious day of the Bharani star, Adi Shankarakar installed the Sri Chakra in this temple and celebrated the Meena-Bharani festival and attained bliss. It is believed that the goddess of the Sri Chakra, Mother Sri Mata, worships the Lord here. The eighteen Siddhas, as well as the Sri Chandan, Mahan, and Paul Siddhas who lived before this, worshipped the Siddhas of this temple and consecrated all that power in this temple before starting their medical research. Therefore, this Lord is also known as ‘Adi Marundeeswarar’.
Times passed. The flood in Thamirabarani overflowed its banks. At that time, the Karuvur Siddha, after worshipping in many Shiva temples, came to see Sidtheeswarar. He saw Shiva standing at the Thavana Theertha in Sudthamalli. The Lord was submerged in the flood. Standing at the Thavana Theertha, he prayed, “How can I worship you?”
Then a voice rang out. Go and worship the Lord in the temple built by the Gandharvan on the north bank. The voice said, “If I am there (in the Thamirabarani river), then I am here (on the north bank) too.” That is why the Lord on the north bank also got the name ‘Angundeesramudaiyar’.
A Gandharvan turned into a stork due to the curse of Durvasa. He did penance thinking of Lord Shiva to get his own form. He went into a state of samadhi without moving or moving. Brahma made Kasalika Devi flow from the top of Pulindamalai as a river. The river carried the Gandharva, who was in a trance, a long way and threw him on the banks of the Thamirabarani river. When the Gandharva woke up, he saw the ashram of the sage Agnisika.
The sage's wife gave the Gandharva a kalash full of stones. He worshipped it. In a few days, all the stones in the kalash turned into a Shivalinga. The Gandharva installed it there as per the advice of sage Bharadwaja and worshipped it. At that time, Jesus appeared as Sankara Narayana on a horse. That Lord was named 'Kandaveswarar'. The Gandharva was freed from the curse and went to heaven. However, it is believed that every year on the day of the Meena-Bharani star, the gods come here in droves to worship Shiva.
During that time, due to the heavy rains that fell for months, the Thamirabarani river frequently flooded. Due to this, the Siddhar Kadu area, where the Thamirabarani divides into two parts, was submerged in water. At that time, the Angundeeswarar temple called Siddheeswaramudaiyar Nainar, which was on the banks, was buried in the sand. The place was surrounded by water.
Due to the severe drought that occurred in Tirunelveli district a few years ago, the Thamirabarani in the Suttamalli area dried up without water. Due to continuous sand mining there, the Siddheeswarar temple, which was buried at a depth of about 8 feet, was discovered in April 2013. The sand pile was removed by the efforts of the people and devotees of the area, and the entire shape of the temple was revealed.
There is a Shiva lingam in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It is surrounded by water. This situation is always like Shiva being cool on Mount Kailash. There is no Ambal here. It is believed that the idol may have been washed away in the flood in the river. Currently, only the Lord is worshipped daily. As a horse-faced woman cursed by Hayagriva worshipped in this temple and was freed from the curse and attained enlightenment, it is also considered a place to expiate the curse of the Guru.
The Shiva temple inside the Thamirabarani river is the ‘Adi Thalam’. When this temple was submerged in water, a temple was built on the south side and Shiva was worshipped there. That temple still exists. Similarly, the temple where Gandharva worshipped is on the north bank. This place is revered as a wonderful place where three temples are located in the middle of the river and on both banks of the river in the same place. It is special to worship all three temples together.

When the Thamirabarani river is in high water, the temple in the middle of the river bed gets submerged. At that time, they will also perform puja to the Angundeeswarar Mudaiyar on the shore.
According to the Puranas, every day, the Kodaganallur Brahmanadava Perumal and his mother come here to perform the Uchikala puja to Angundeeswarar. Being there at that time is an opportunity that God gives us to make a difference in this life!
The Vibhuti anointed to Angundeeswarar is the original Marundeeswarar, so it is considered the best medicine for all diseases.
If you sit in a specific place in the temple on the shore and pray "Om", you will feel like you are sitting in front of the Lord at Kailash and chanting Pranavam. This is a temple that those who are interested in meditation should visit once and experience.
