Soundara Raja Perumal Temple, Papanasam, Thanjavur

Soundara Raja Perumal Temple is located about 8 kms West of Kumbakonam in Sundara Perumal Koil near Papanasam. The temple is located at a distance of 4 km from Papanasam.

Legends

Lord Vishnu relieving Indra from Curse:

Cursed by a rishi, Indra was struck with an illness. To relieve himself from the curse, he came here and undertook penance under the Vanni Tree in Sundara Perumal Koil. He was to donate pumpkins to Brahmins but when he could not find a Brahmin, it is believed that Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a Brahmin and appeared here before Indra.

Later, Lord Vishnu provided darshan to Indra as Soundara Raja Perumal and relieved him of his curse. In a thanking gesture, Indra installed the idol of Soundara Rajan and built this temple.

Abhimana Perumal:

According to the Puranas, Sundara Raja Perumal is said to be the Abhimana Lord for Pulla Bhoothangudi Rama, Lord of Azhagar Koil and Oppiliappan.

The Temple

There is a separate Sannidhi at this temple for 18 steps Karuppiah (similar to Azhagar Koil) who acts as the security for this temple.

There are also separate sannidhis for Vishwaksenar, Yoga Narasimha, Kannan, Anjaneya, Azhvaars and Garuda.

Festivals 

Puratasi Navarathri is the only big festival at this temple. On Vijayadasami, Sundara Raja Perumal goes out on his only street procession of the year.

Buses between Kumbakonam and Thanjavur stop near the railway level crossing at Sundara Perumal Koil (about 2kms West of Swami Malai and 5 kms East of Papanasam). The temple is about 1/2km from the bus stop. Car from Kumbakonam will cost about Rs.200-250/-

சுந்தர பெருமாள் கோயில் பாபநாசம்

அழகர் கோயில் இறைவனுக்கும் ஒப்பிலியப்பனுக்கும் அபிமானப் பெருமாள்

கும்பகோணத்திற்கு மேற்கே சுமார் 8 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் பாபநாசம் அருகே உள்ள சுந்தர பெருமாள் கோயிலில் பல நூற்றாண்டுகள் பழமையான அழகிய சௌந்தர ராஜ பெருமாள் கோயில் உள்ளது.

கதை

ஒரு ரிஷியால் சபிக்கப்பட்ட இந்திரன் நோய்வாய்ப்பட்டான். சாபத்தில் இருந்து விடுபட இங்கு வந்து சுந்தர பெருமாள் கோயிலில் உள்ள வன்னி மரத்தடியில் தவம் மேற்கொண்டார். அவர் பிராமணர்களுக்கு பூசணிக்காயை தானம் செய்ய இருந்தார், ஆனால் அவர் ஒரு பிராமணரைக் காணாதபோது, ​​​​விஷ்ணு தன்னை ஒரு பிராமணனாக மாறுவேடமிட்டு இந்திரன் முன் தோன்றினார் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது.

பின்னர், விஷ்ணு பகவான் இந்திரனுக்கு சௌந்தரராஜப் பெருமாளாக தரிசனம் அளித்து அவனுடைய சாபத்தைப் போக்கினார். நன்றி தெரிவிக்கும் வகையில், இந்திரன் சௌந்தர ராஜனின் சிலையை நிறுவி, இந்தக் கோயிலைக் கட்டினான்.

புள்ள பூதங் குடி ராமர், அழகர் கோயில் மற்றும் ஒப்பிலியப்பன் ஆகியோருக்கு சுந்தரராஜப் பெருமாள் அபிமானமாக விளங்குவதாக புராணங்கள் கூறுகின்றன.

இந்தக் கோயிலுக்குப் பாதுகாப்பாளராகச் செயல்படும் 18 படி கருப்பையாவுக்கு (அழகர் கோயிலைப் போன்றது) தனிச் சந்நிதி இந்தக் கோயிலில் உள்ளது.

விஷ்வக்சேனர், யோக நரசிம்மர், கண்ணன், ஆஞ்சநேயர், ஆழ்வார்கள், கருடன் ஆகியோருக்கும் தனித்தனி சந்நிதிகள் உள்ளன.

திருவிழாக்கள்

இக்கோயிலில் புரட்டாசி நவராத்திரி மட்டுமே பெரிய திருவிழாவாக நடைபெறுகிறது. விஜயதசமி அன்று சுந்தரராஜப் பெருமாள் வருடத்தின் ஒரே வீதி உலா செல்கிறார்.
