Devambadhi Valasu Temple

Sri Amaneeswara Swamy temple, Devambadhi Valasu:  This place is around 18 Kms from Pollachi on the Pollachi-Palakkad main Road.  The temple is around 1 Km from the bus stop.   This Shiva temple is unique in the sense that there are two Ammans- Parvathi and Ganga.  Another notable feature is the sthala Vruksham.  Here it is Neem ( vembu in Tamil ) which is generally associated only with Amman temples.  This temple is very small in comparison to the several temples about which I have written so far.

This temple is situated amidst sylvan surroundings.  Unlike other temples where there are Murthis on the outer wall of the main shrine, here there are no such idols.  Only Vinayakar and Navagrahas are in the corridor.  The Vinayakar here is called Vembu Vinayakar, after the Sthala Vruksham.  The Nandi in front of the Lord wears a Rudraksha Mala.  Unlike the other Kongu temples, here there is no flag post or Bali Peetam.

As per Sthala Puranam, this place is associated with the arrival of River Ganges on the earth. Readers may be familiar with the story of King Bageeratha who prayed to Shiva to give salvation to his forefathers.  This would be possible only when the rituals are done with the water of Ganga.  Pleased with his penance, the Lord allowed Ganga to flow down to earth.  She was not very happy with this and She came down with all Her might.  This would have destroyed the entire world and in order to protect the earth, Lord took the ferocious Ganga on His matted hair and allowed only a small trickle to flow down through a hole in his hair.  Since She was on the head of the Lord, She is considered one of His Consorts.  This episode is believed to have happened here and hence there are two Ambals- Parvathi and Ganga.  Both the Ambals appear on either side of the Lord.

The Lord is sitting in penance in Padmasana, with half closed eyes.  His feet are close to each other.  Netrikann ( the third eye of Shiva ) is seen on His forehead in star shape.  Chandikeswarar is present with the Lord Himself, instead of the separate shrine seen in other temples.  Since the Deivam ( the Lord ) resides in this village ( Valasu means village in old Tamil ), it is called Deivambadi Valasu which later became Devambadhi Valasu.  Another explanation is that this is the place where the Devas were living, it is called Devam+ Padhi+Valasu

தன் மூதாதையர்களுக்கு பிதுர் தர்ப்பணம் செய்யவேண்டும் என்பதற்காக பகீரதன் சிவனை வேண்டி, கங்காதேவியை ஆகாயத்திலிருந்து பூமிக்கு அழைத்து வந்தான். அவள் பெரும் ஆற்றலுடன் பூமியை நோக்கி வந்ததால் சிவன் அவளை தனது தலையில் தாங்கி, வேகத்தைக் குறைத்தார். பின், ஜடாமுடியை சாய்த்து பூமியில் பாயவிட்டார். தன்னைக் கட்டுப்படுத்திய சிவனின் தலையிலேயே கங்காதேவி குடி கொண்டாள். இதனால் இவளை சிவனது மனைவி என்றும் சொல்வர். இந்த நிகழ்வின் அடிப்படையில், இத்தலத்தில் சிவனுடன் பார்வதி, கங்காதேவி ஆகிய இருவரும் அருளுகின்றனர்.

இந்த தலத்தில் அனைத்து தெய்வங்களும் வசிப்பதாக நம்பிக்கை இருக்கிறது. எனவே “தெய்வம்பாடி வலசு” என்றழைக்கப்பட்ட இவ்வூர், “தேவம் பாடிவலசு” என்று மருவியது.

சிவன் தனது இரண்டு கண்களையும் பாதி மூடிய தவநிலையில், பூணூல் அணிந்து காட்சி தருகிறார். இவரது நெற்றியில் நட்சத்திர வடிவத்தில் நெற்றிக்கண்ணும், பாதங்கள் இரண்டும் ஒட்டியநிலையிலும் இருக்கிறது.

அளவில் சிறிதாக இருக்கும் இக்கோயில் புல்வெளிக்கு மத்தியில் இயற்கை அழகுடன் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. கருவறை சுற்றுச்சுவரில் தெய்வங்கள், எதுவும் இல்லை. கொடிமரம், பலிபீடமும் கிடையாது. சுவாமியின் எதிரே உருத்ராட்சை அணிந்த நந்தியும், பிரகாரத்தில் விநாயகர், நவக்கிரகங்களும் உள்ளனர்.

இரட்டை அம்பிகை தலம் என்பதால் வேம்புக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் தரப்பட்டுள்ளதாகச் சொல்கிறார்கள். அருகே சண்டிகேஸ்வரர் சிவனுடன் இருக்கிறார். இத்தலத்தின் விநாயகர் வேம்பு விநாயகர் எனப்படுகிறார்.

பார்வதி, கங்காதேவி ஆகிய இருவருடன் உள்ள இந்த சிவனது தரிசனம் விசேட பலன்களைத் தரக்கூடியது. அம்பாள் கோயில்களில் தலவிருட்சமாக இருக்கும் வேப்ப மரம் இந்த சிவத் தலத்தின் விருட்சமாக இருப்பது சிறப்பம்சம்.
