Patteeswaram is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva; the deity here is Sri Dhenupureeswarar. The temple is close to Sri Durgai, a popular place near Kumbakonam. The Goddess who resides in Patteeswaram is Gnanambikai.

The History Behind Name

Patteeswaram derived its name from Patti, the girl calf of the cow Kamadhenu. The legend says that once Parasakthi was in search of a peaceful place to perform her tapas. She then found this place and started her penance.

Kamdhenu, the sacred cow, got to know about it and sent her daughter to help Parasakthi with everything. Lord Shiva became pleased with the penance of Parasakthi and gave her Darshan. Patti, the daughter, witnessed this, and she also installed a Shiva Linga and started worshipping it. Shiva also became pleased with the worship of Patti and blessed her; since then, the place has got its name, "Patteeswaram."

Significances Of The Temple

The temple is one of the significant ones as it holds many legends. One legend says that once, Thirugnaana Sambandar wanted to have Lord Shiva's darshan and traveled toward the temple Patteeswaram. However, it was hot, scorching summer, and Sambandar was finding it difficult to bear.

Seeing his devotee in pain, Lord Shiva ordered his Ganas to bring a Muthu Pandhal, an umbrella, and hold it over Sambandar so he could walk comfortably to the temple.

Also, Lord Shiva wanted to see Sambandar on his way as the Lord was eager to see him. However, Nandhi was sitting in front of the Lord and was blocking the vision. The Lord then asked Nandhi to shift a bit so he could see his devotee. Nandhi obeyed and cleared the view for his Lord. That is why it can be seen today that the statue of Nandhi is a bit away from the Lord.

Also, when Sambandar had a darshan of the Lord, he was filled up with utmost joy and sang 10 hymns on Lord Shiva.

The temple holds the history of the Chola Kingdom as well. Sri Durga is installed in this temple which is believed to be installed by the Cholas. At first, the idol of the Goddess was somewhere else unknown. Cholas then brought this shrine and installed it in a separate shrine in the temple. Now many more devotees come here to visit the shrine of the Goddess.

This temple has been significant to Cholas. The temple Patteeswaram is located near Pazhaiyaarai, which is the land where Raja Chola was born. Cholas used to visit this temple and get blessings before any battle. They used to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga.

Lord Rama has also been believed to worship Goddess Durga here before going on his battle again Ravana.

This is also the place where Sage Viswamithra uses the Gayathri Mantra. Hence he was called "Brahma Rishi" by Saint Vasishta.

Here the Goddess Durga is seen having three eyes and eight hands in which she holds her weapons. Her legs rest on the demon Mahishasura who the Goddess killed. The Goddess holds all the weapons, but she has such grace and mercy on her face that a mother has for her children.

Durga here remains in a standing posture of about six feet in height. She is draped in a Madisar saree and wears lemon and arali garland. Her smiling face is welcoming to the devotees; the Goddess resides with her mount lion, standing and facing right.

Most devotees come on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays during Rahu kalam. This is because the Goddess here is worshipped during Rahu kalam to receive more benefits and blessings. By praying to the Goddess here, we cut our bad karma and gain the forgiving nature of the Goddess; our doshas get removed, and we attain peace in our life.

To worship the Goddess, one should light a lamp during Rahu kalam. Durga is also considered elder to her brother Vishnu; hence, Ashtami and Navami days that are important to worship Lord Vishnu are also considered essential to worship the Goddess. Additionally, one can also worship her on Amavasya and Pournami.

Many people also visit here to pray for their offspring, and the Goddess blesses them with a child.

Sri Thenupureeswarar Temple Festivals

The temple organizes many festivals all year long. The famous one is the ten-day festival in Margazhi (December-January). The Vaikasi festival (May-June), Navarathri, and Muthu Pandal Festival (June-July) are other festivals celebrated here.

Devotees can reach here via Trichy International Airport, 95 km from the temple. You can also visit via the nearest Railway station Kumbakonam which is 8.9 km from the temple. From Kumbakonam Bus Terminal, you can take a bus and reach the temple or get private autos and taxis.

துர்க்கையம்மன்

மற்ற இடங்களைப் போலல்லாமல் துர்க்கையம்மன் ஸ்வரூபணியாக காட்சி தருகிறாள். தன்னைச் சரண் அடையும் பக்தர்களுக்கு உடனே அருள்புரிய காலைஎடுத்து வைத்துப் புறப்படுகிற தோற்றத்தில் துர்க்கை நிற்பது இன்னொரு சிறப்பு. எட்டு கரங்களில் ஒரு கரத்தில் கிளியை வைத்துள்ளார். மகிஷாசுரன் தலை மேல் பாதங்களை வைத்து, சிம்ம வாகனத்தில் எட்டுக் கரங்களுடன் மகர குண்டலங்களுடன் திரிபங்க ரூபியாய் மூன்று நேத்திரங்களுடன் கம்பீரமாக காட்சி தருகிறாள்.

ஆறடி உயரத்தில், அழகாக புடவை கட்டி, எலுமிச்சை மற்றும் ரோஜா மாலை அணிந்துள்ளார். எருமை முகமுடைய மகிஷாசுரனைக் காலில் மிதித்து, நிமிர்ந்து நின்ற கோலத்தில் காட்சி அளிக்கிறார். பிற ஆறு கரங்களில் சங்கு, சக்கரம், வில், அம்பு, வாள், கேடயம் ஆகிய ஆயுதங்களைக் கொண்டு சாந்தமாக போர் முடித்த கோலத்தில் காணக் கிடைக்கிறாள். இடப்பக்கம் நோக்கியுள்ள வாகன சிம்மத்தின் ரூபிணியாக விளங்குகிறாள். துர்க்கை இங்கு சாந்த சொரூபிணியாக இருப்பதை அவளது புன்னகை தவழும் முகமும், வலப்புறம் திரும்பியுள்ள சிம்ம வாகன முகமும் நிரூபிக்கிறது. பக்தர்களை வரவேற்கும் கோலத்தில் வெற்றி வாகை சூடிய நிலையில் இருக்கிறாள். 

துர்க்கையம்மனின் எட்டு கரங்களில் காணப்படும் முத்திரைகள் கீழ்க்கண்ட பொருளைத் தருகின்றன.

பாண்டிய மன்னர்களுக்கு மீனாட்சி எப்படி குலதெய்வமாக விளங்கினாளோ அவ்வாறே சோழ மன்னர் பரம்பரை முழுவதற்கும் பட்டீஸ்வர துர்க்கை குலதெய்வமாக விளங்கிவந்தாள். பாண்டியனை மணந்த சோழ அரசியான மங்கையர்க்கரசி தேவியாரும், ராஜராஜ சோழனுக்கு மதியூகி ஆலோசகராக விளங்கிய குந்தவைப் பிராட்டியாரும் பட்டீஸ்வர துர்க்கை மீது அபார பக்தி செலுத்தியவர்கள் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. 

தங்க ரதம்

இக்கோயிலுக்கு இரண்டு கோடி ரூபாயில் புதிய தங்கரதம் வடிவமைக்கும் பணி துவங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தங்கரதம் வடிவமைக்க பக்தர்களிடம் ஏழு லட்சம் மதிப்பீட்டில் மர ரதம், அதன்மீது 1.75 கோடி ரூபாய் மதிப்பீட்டில் பத்து கிலோ எடையில் தங்க ரேக்கும் பதிக்கப்பட உள்ள நிலையில், 12 அடி உயரம், எட்டு அடி அகலத்தில், நான்கு சக்கரம் பொருத்தும் பணி ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பட்டீச்சரம் பட்டீஸ்வரர் கோயில் மற்றும் துர்க்கையம்மன் கோயிலின் குடமுழுக்கு மன்மத வருடம் தை மாதம் 15ஆம் நாள் 29 ஜனவரி 2016  அன்று நடைபெற்றது.
