Kottur Kozhundeeswarar Temple, Thiruvarur

Kottur Kozhundeeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Kottur in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Kozhundeeswarar / Sameevaneswarar / Akraparameswarar and is facing west. Mother is called as Mathupaashini / Thenar Mozhiyal / Thenambal / Madhura vachanambika and is facing east. The historical name of the place is Indirapuram. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar.

There are two temples in this village; the one on the west side has been glorified by the Thevaram while the other is praised by Thiruvisaippa (Keezhkotur Mani Ambalam). This is the 228th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 111th Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Nadu. This Shivastalam is located in the vicinity of Thirukkalar. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni tree. There are nine Theerthams for the temple, like Mulliaru, Sivagangai, Brahma, Siva, Amudhu, Indra, Vishwakarma, Mandai and Aramba Theertham.

Legends

Indra made Vajrayudha from the back bone of Sage Thatheesi:

Demon Vruddhasura was harassing the Devas in a terrible way. Their king Indira appealed to Lord Brahmma for protection. He said that Indira had to get the back bone of Sage Thatheesi, make a Vajrayudha weapon of it and should apply it on the demon and that alone could kill him. Lord Brahmma also explained the secret of the strength of the back bone of the sage. Before joining the churning the milk ocean, all the Devas entrusted their weapons with the sage.

The sage simply put all their weapons safely in his mouth and continued his penance then. All the weapons melted and merged with his back bone making it miraculously strong. When Indira approached the sage and expressed his purpose and wish, the sage calmly parted with his back bone. Indira killed the demon with the weapon but incurred the Brahmahatti Dosha the impact of the highest sin. Indira approached his Guru for solution. 

He advised him to go to earth and perform Shiva puja and that he would find a Shivalinga at a place under a Vanni tree made of drops of nectar. Guru also advised Indira to create a spring and perform abishek to Lord with the water then. Indira followed the advice of the Guru scrupulously and freed himself from the sin. As Indira worshipped Lord here, the place was named Indirapuram and also Kottur as his white elephant Iravadham drew a line (kodu in Tamil) in the place.

Celestial Dancer Ramba performed severe penance here:

Noted dancer of the celestial world Ramba was cursed to go to Earth for some wrongs she committed. She performed severe penance facing the Lord of the temple pressing her left leg, bending the right and placing the left hand on the right leg and the right hand on the head surrounded by burning fire to go back to her place.

The divine elephant Airavatam is associated with this temple and hence the name Airaavateeswaram.

Brahmma worshipped Lord Shiva here:

Brahma worshiped Lord Siva under Vanni tree, which is Sthala Vriksham of the temple, and he was blessed by Lord Siva.

Indrasenan worshipped Lord Shiva here:

Indrasenan worshiped Lord here, to pardon him for having ill-treated Brahmins.

The Temple

The Temple is having three tiered Rajagopuram and is facing west. There are two inner corridors, Prakara in this temple. At the entrance, Dwajasthambam and Nandi in front facing main sanctum can be seen. Presiding Deity is Swayambu Lingam known as Kozhundeeswarar / Sameevaneswarar / Akraparameswarar and is facing west. Mother is called as Mathupaashini / Thenar Mozhiyal / Thenambal / Madhura vachanambika and is facing east. Shiva faces West and Ambal faces East in the Upadesam Sannidhi formation.

The Pradosha Kala Murthy (time between 4.30 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. is observed as Pradosha kala according to Hindu almanac) is in a separate shrine in the form of an idol. The Arthanareeswara (half Shiva-half Ambica) form will be visible on the Linga when milk abishek is performed on Masi Magam day during February-March. Narthana Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothpavar, Brahma, Durgai and Sandeswarar are the Koshta Idols.

Natarajar, Sivakami and Manickavasagar Idols are found in the Sabha Mandapam. These Idols are found in a village Mayilaerupuram during ploughing. Sthala Vriksham is Vanni tree. There are nine Theerthams for the temple, like Mulliaru, Sivagangai, Brahma, Siva, Amudhu, Indra, Vishwakarma, Mandai and Aramba Theertham.

There are shrines for Vinayaka, Muruga, Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Vishnu with his consorts, Chandran, Naalvar, Lord Muruga, Rambha in penancing style, Gajalakshmi, Bhairava, Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Akoraveerabadra, Nandikeswara, Vallaba Ganapathi, Nataraja, Brahmma, Mahishasuramardhini, Navagrahas Umamaheswarar, Arthanareeswarar, Meenakshi Sundareswarar and Chandikeswarar.

At around 1 km east of this temple there is a Thiruvisaippa temple, sung by Karuvur Thevar. The main deity is called Iravatheeswarar. This is the place where the bell of Airavatam, the elephant fell. Aani Pournami is the day on which the Lord performed his dance.

The temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

Festivals

Six worship services are offered in this temple each day. Vaikasi Visakam Brahmmotsavam (May-June), Aadi Pooram (July-August), Navarathri (September-October), Karthikai (November-December) and Vaikasi Visagam are the festivals celebrated in the temple. An image of Arthanareeswarar can be seen on the Shivalingam when it is bathed with milk, during festival days such as Maasi Magam.

The temple is worshipfully mentioned by Saint Thirugnana Sambandar in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 228th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 111th Sthalam on the south side of River Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.

*விருத்திராசுரன் என்ற அரக்கன் தேவர்களை மிகவும் துன்புறுத்தி வந்தான். இந்திரன் அவனை வெல்வதற்கான வழியைக் கூறும்படி பிரம்மாவிடம் வேண்டினான். ததீசி என்ற முனிவரின் முதுகெலும்பை பெற்று அதை வஜ்ராயுதமாக்கி அதன் மூலம் மட்டுமே அரக்கனை கொல்லமுடியும் என்று பிரம்மா இந்திரனிடம் கூறினார்.*

 *இந்திரனும் அதன்படி முனிவரைக் கொன்று அவரது முதுகெலும்பை வஜ்ராயுதமாக்கி விருத்திராசுரனனைக் கொன்றான். முனிவரை கொன்று முதுகெலும்பை பெற்றதால், இந்திரனுக்கு பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம் ஏற்பட்டது.*

*இந்த தோஷத்தை போக்கிக் கொள்ள தேவகுருவான பிரகஸ்பதியை நாடினான். அவரின் ஆலோசனைப்படி இந்திரன் பூவுலகம் வந்து வன்னிமரத்தின் அடியில் இத்தலத்தில் இருக்கும் சிவலிங்கத்தை ஒரு தீர்த்தம் உண்டாக்கி அதனால் அபிஷேகம் செய்து வழிபட்டான்*

 *சிவபெருமான் அருளால் பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷமும் நீங்கப் பெற்றான். இந்திரன் பூஜித்ததால் இத்தலம் இந்திரபுரம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டது*

 *இந்திரனின் வாகனமான ஐராவதம் என்ற யானையும் இத்தல இறைவனை வழிபட்டது. தனது தந்தத்தால் பூமியில் கோடு கிழித்ததால் இத்தலம் கோட்டூர் எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது*

 *இறைவனைபூஜித்து பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம் நீங்கப் பெற்றதால், இத்தலத்தில் நீராடி இறைவனை வழிபடுபவர்களின் பிரம்மஹத்தி முதலான சகல தோஷங்களும் நீங்கும் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.*

*கோட்டூர் இரண்டு பகுதிகளாக மேலக்கோட்டூர் என்றும், கீழக்கோட்டூர் என்றும் உள்ளது* 

*மேலக்கோட்டூரிலுள்ள கோவிலே பாடல் பெற்ற சிவஸ்தலம்.*

 *கோவிலுக்கு முதல் கட்டமாக ஒரு துழைவாயிலும், அதையடுத்து மேற்கு நோக்கிய மூன்று நிலை ராஜகோபுரமும் உள்ளது. இரண்டு பிரகாரத்துடன் விளங்கும் இக்கோவிலில் முதல் வாயில் வழியாக உள்ளே புழைந்ததும் கவசமிட்ட கொடி மரமும், பலிபீடமும் நந்தியும் உள்ளன. உள்பிரகாரத்தில் மூலவர் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். கருவறை கோஷ்ட தெய்வங்களாக நர்த்தன கணபதி, தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, லிங்கோத்பவர், பிரம்மா, துர்க்கை உள்ளனர். சண்டேசுவரர் சந்நிதி உள்ளது*.

*அம்பிகை தேனாம்பாள் கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமைந்துள்ளது. நின்ற திருக்கோலத்தில் அம்பிகை காட்சி தருகிறாள். மாசி மகத்தன்று இத்தல இறைவனுக்கு பால் அபிஷேகம் செய்தால், லிங்கத்தில் அர்த்தநாரீஸ்வர வடிவம் தெரிவதை பார்க்கலாம் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.*

*தலத்தின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அம்சமாக உள்ளது இங்குள்ள ரம்பையின் உருவம். ஒரு சமயம் தேவலோகத்தில் இந்திரனின் சபையில் நடனம் ஆடிய பிறகு களைப்பால் பூஞ்சோலையில் ரம்பை ஆடை விலகியது கூட அறியாமல் படுத்து உறங்க, அவ்வழி வந்த நாரதர் ரம்பையின் நிலைகண்டு கோபித்து அவளை பூவுலகில் பிறக்கும்படி சபித்தார்.*

*நாரதர் சாபத்திலிருந்து விடுபட, அவரின் அறிவுரைப்படி ரம்பை இத்தலத்தில் ஈசனை நோக்கி இடது கால் ஊன்றி, வலது கால் மடித்து, உள்ளங்காலில் இடது கையை வைத்து, வலது கையை தலைமேல் வைத்தபடி அக்னியில் நின்று தவம் செய்தாள். ரம்பைக்கு தரிசனம் தந்த இறைவன் வரங்கள் பல தந்து மறைந்தார். அவள் முன்பை விடவும் அதிக ஈடுபாட்டுடன் சிவனை அனுதினமும் பூஜித்து வந்தாள். தவம் செய்த அமைப்புடன் காணும் ரம்பையின் உருவச்சிலை காணவேண்டிய ஒன்று. உமாமகேஸ்வரர், அற்புதமான அர்த்தநாரீசுவரர் ஆகியோரும் தரிசிக்க வேண்டிவர்கள்*

*இக்கோயிலினுள் உள்ள அமுதக் கிணற்றோடு முள்ளியாறு, சிவகங்கை தீர்த்தம், பிரம்ம தீர்த்தம், இந்திர தீர்த்தம், சிவ தீர்த்தம், விஸ்வகர்ம தீர்த்தம், ரம்பை தீர்த்தம் மற்றும் மண்டை தீர்த்தம் என ஒன்பது தீர்த்தங்கள் இத்தல தீர்த்தங்களாக உள்ளன*

*தல விருட்சமாக வன்னி மரம் திகழ்கிறது.. திருஞானசம்பந்தர் இத்தலத்து இறைவன் மேல் பாடியருளியுள்ள இப்பதிகம் 2-ம் திருமுறையில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது.*

 *தனது பதிகத்தின் ஒவ்வொரு பாடலிலும் இத்தல இறைவனை "கோட்டூர் நற்கொழுந்தே" என்று போற்றுகின்றார். கோட்டூர் கொழுந்தீசரை வணங்குபவர்கள் தேவருலகில் தேவரோடும் இனிந்திருப்பார்கள், அழியாத செல்வமுடையவராய் இவ்வுலகில் புகழோடு வாழ்வார்கள், அடியவர்களின் வினைகள் நீங்கி இறைவன் திருவருளைப் பெறுவார்கள், வழிபடுவர்களுக்கு இடரும், கேடும் ஏதும் இல்லாமல் உலகெலாம் புகழுடன் விளங்குவர் என்று பதிகத்தில் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார்*. *மேலும் தனது பதிகத்தில் கோட்டூரைப் பற்றி குறிப்பிடும் போது (7-வது பாடல்) இத்தலம் மாடமாளிகை, கூடகோபுரம், மணிஅரங்கம், அழகியசாலை, புகழ்தற்குரிய மதில், பொன் மண்டபம் ஆகியவற்றோடு அழகிய பொழில்கள் சூழ்ந்த கோட்டூர் என்று கூறுகிறார்*
