 Festival

 The ceremony is held here only once in 100 years.  This was called the 'carriage festival'. Only during this festival, the box containing Ambal's idol would be taken around the village for a stroll. This festival was not held for a few centuries due to Ambal's order not being received. The ceremony of giving Pongal seer to Ambal from the nearby Nadrayar temple is held in Thaimatham.

 Turmeric and kunguma prasad, which is usually offered in Ambal temples, is also not offered here.  She is given ashes from the oven where Naivedyam is made.  It is said to be medicinal.  The Amaravati river that flows near the temple returns to this place as if it garlanded Ambal.  In the beginning Ambal was known as "Nalladai". As Ambal sat near the river bank, she was also called "Arungarai Amman".  Over time this name has stuck.

 General information

 Another name of the Goddess here is Nalladai.  There is no sanctum sanctorum, vimana, or tower here.  The place where the box is is considered as Ambal and worshipped.

 Nadrayar, Ladamuni, Maduraiveeran, Karuppasamy, Mahamuni are guardian deities, Rahu and Ketu are accompanied by Ganesha.  Vinayaka and guardian deitiesi do not have abhishekam.  The altar at the front of the temple is designed like a turtle.

 Since the men in search of the girl reached the area on Tuesday midnight, the temple is opened here only on Tuesdays and puja is held at midnight.  On other days the temple remains closed day and night.  Only men enter the temple and worship.

 Women are not allowed inside.  They may stand at the door and worship.  Even girls are not allowed to enter the temple.  Women standing outside and worshiping should take a bath in the Amaravati river and worship with a wet cloth.

 After the pooja to Ambal, the prepared pooja items and fine payment of bananas, grains etc. are left from the front hall of the temple as a "surai" (throw). These are held by the women in their sarees. Ambal is believed to bless the women in the form of prasad items.

 Head history

 In earlier times, the fishermen who lived in this area used to catch fish in the Amaravati river.  Once when a fisherman was casting a net in a river, a box got stuck.  When he opened it, he found an idol of a goddess inside.  Thinking that Ambal had come to the river to bless him, he placed the box under a tree on the bank of the river.

Fishermen worshiped Ambal.  As time went on they left the place and the box was covered with sand and buried in the soil.

 There was only a small mound where the box had been.  After many years some people in this area were engaged in cattle herding.  A girl named Nalladai was tending her cows when she saw a single cow spilling milk on a sand mound under a tree.  When I went closer to my surprise, there was a mound.  She sat on it.  He did not wake up after that.

 Only the cows returned home in the evening.  When the men of the town came looking for the girl as they could not find her, they found the girl sitting on the sandbank.  They invited the girl to come home.  The girl who refused to come said to them, "I want to stay here.  On this day of mine, do puja and worship me only at this time.” She turned into a torch and disappeared.  Then they considered the girl as Ambal and worshiped her without any form.  A temple was built here later.

திருவிழா

இங்கு 100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு ஒருமுறை தான் விழா நடத்தப்பட்டதாம். இதை "பேரூட்ட விழா' என்று அழைத்தனர். இவ்விழாவின் போது மட்டும் அம்பாள் சிலை இருக்கும் பெட்டியை கிராமம் முழுவதும் உலாவாக எடுத்துச் செல்வார்களாம். அம்பாள் உத்தரவு கிடைக்காததால் இவ்விழா சில நூற்றாண்டுகளாக நடத்தப்படவில்லை. தைமாதத்தில் அருகிலுள்ள நாட்ராயர் கோயிலில் இருந்து அம்பாளுக்கு பொங்கல் சீர் கொடுக்கும் விழா நடக்கிறது.

அம்பாள் கோயில்களில் வழக்கமாக தரப்படும் மஞ்சள், குங்கும பிரசாதமும் இங்கு தரப்படுவதில்லை. அவளுக்கு நைவேத்தியம் தயாரிக்கும் அடுப்பிலுள்ள சாம்பலையே தருகின்றனர். இது மருத்துவத்தன்மை வாய்ந்தது என்கிறார்கள். கோயில் அருகே ஓடும் அமராவதி ஆறு அம்பாளுக்கு மாலையிட்டது போல இவ்விடத்தில் திரும்பிச் செல்கிறது. தொடக்கத்தில் அம்பாள் "நல்லதாய்' என அழைக்கப்பட்டாள். ஆற்றங்கரையின் அருகே அமர்ந்த அம்பாள் என்பதால் இவளை "அருங்கரை அம்மன்' என்றும் அழைத்தனர். காலப்போக்கில் இந்த பெயரே நிலைத்து விட்டது.

இங்குள்ள அம்மனின் வேறு பெயர் நல்லதாய். கருவறை, விமானம், கோபுரம் என எதுவுமே இங்கு இல்லை. பெட்டி இருக்கும் இடத்தையே அம்பாளாக கருதி வழிபடுகின்றனர்.

நாட்ராயர், லாடமுனி, மதுரைவீரன், கருப்பசாமி, மகாமுனி என்ற காவல் தெய்வங்கள், ராகு, கேதுவுடன் விநாயகர் உள்ளனர். விநாயகருக்கும், காவல் தெய்வங்களுக்கும் அபிஷேகம் கிடையாது. கோயில் முன்புறத்தில் உள்ள பலிபீடத்தை ஆமை தாங்குவதுபோல அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

குடும்பம் சிறக்க, விவசாயம் செழிக்க அம்பாளிடம் வேண்டிக் கொள்கின்றனர்.

தலபெருமை

பெண்கள் பார்க்காத அம்பாள்

சிறுமியை தேடிய ஆண்கள் இப்பகுதிக்கு வந்தது செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை நள்ளிரவு வேளை என்பதால், இங்கு செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை மட்டுமே கோயில் திறக்கப்பட்டு நள்ளிரவில் பூஜை நடக்கிறது. மற்ற நாட்களில் கோயில் இரவும், பகலும் அடைக்கப்பட்டே இருக்கும். ஆண்கள் மட்டுமே கோயிலுக்குள் சென்று வழிபடுகின்றனர்.

பெண்களுக்கு உள்ளே அனுமதியில்லை. அவர்கள் வாசலில் நின்று வழிபடலாம். பெண் குழந்தைகள் கூட கோயிலுக்குள் செல்ல அனுமதி கிடையாது. வெளியில் நின்று வணங்கும் பெண்கள், அமராவதி ஆற்றில் குளித்துவிட்டு, தலை முடியாமல், ஈரத்துணியுடன் வழிபட வேண்டும்.

அம்பாளுக்கு பூஜை முடிந்தபின்பு, படைக்கப்பட்ட பூஜைப் பொருட்கள், மற்றும் நேர்த்திக்கடனாக செலுத்தும் வாழை, தானியங்கள் போன்றவற்றை கோயில் முன் மண்டபத்தில் இருந்து "சூரை' (எறிதல்) விடுகின்றனர். இதனை பெண்கள் தங்களது சேலைத்தலைப்பில் பிடித்துக் கொள்கின்றனர். அம்பாள் பிரசாத பொருட்களின் வடிவில் பெண்களுக்கு அருளுவதாக நம்பிக்கை.

தல வரலாறு

முன்னொரு காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியில் வசித்த மீனவர்கள் அமராவதி ஆற்றில் மீன் பிடிக்கும் தொழிலை செய்து வந்தனர். ஒருசமயம் ஒரு மீனவர் ஆற்றில் வலைவீசிய போது, பெட்டி ஒன்று சிக்கியது. அதை திறந்தபோது, அதற்குள் ஒரு அம்மன் சிலை இருந்ததைக் கண்டான். அம்பாள் தனக்கு அருள்புரிவதற்காகவே ஆற்றில் வந்ததாக கருதிய அவன் ஆற்றங்கரையிலுள்ள மரத்தின் அடியில் பெட்டியை வைத்தான். மீனவர்கள் அம்பாளுக்கு பூஜை செய்து வழிபட்டு வந்தனர். காலப்போக்கில் அவர்கள் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டு சென்றுவிடவே, மணல் மூடி பெட்டி மண்ணுக்குள் புதைந்து விட்டது.

பெட்டி இருந்த இடத்தில் சிறிய மேடு மட்டும் இருந்தது. பல வருடங்களுக்கு பிறகு இப்பகுதியில் சிலர் கால்நடைகளை மேய்க்கும் தொழிலைச் செய்து வந்தனர். நல்லதாய் என்ற சிறுமி, மாடு மேய்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது ஒரு பசு மட்டும் மரத்தின் அடியில் இருந்த மணல் மேட்டின் மீது பால் சொரிந்ததைக் கண்டாள். வியப்புற்று அருகில் சென்று பார்த்தபோது ஒரு மேடு இருந்தது. அதன் மீது அவள் அமர்ந்தாள். அதன்பின் எழவில்லை.

மாலையில் மாடுகள் மட்டும் வீடு திரும்பின. சிறுமியைக் காணாததால் ஊரில் இருந்த ஆண்கள் அவளைத்தேடி இங்கு வந்தபோது, சிறுமி மணல் திட்டில் அமர்ந்திருந்ததைக் கண்டனர். அவர்கள் சிறுமியை வீட்டிற்கு வரும்படி அழைத்தனர். அங்கிருந்த வர மறுத்த சிறுமி அவர்களிடம், ""நான் இங்கேதான் இருக்க விரும்புகிறேன். என்னைக்கண்ட இந்த நாளில், இதே நேரத்தில் மட்டும் எனக்கு பூஜை செய்து வழிபடுங்கள்'' என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு ஜோதியாக மாறி மறைந்துவிட்டாள். பின் அவர்கள் சிறுமியை அம்பாளாக எண்ணி உருவம் ஏதுமில்லாமல் வழிபட்டு வந்தனர். பிற்காலத்தில் இங்கு கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது.
