*Nattam Sri Mariamman Temple

 Goddess Swayambu graces here.  Amman, who is the goddess, sits on a swan and while treading on the monster with her feet, blesses the devotees who have bowed down to Chumala.  This is a feature that cannot be found anywhere else.*

 Several hundred years ago, a man named Lingamanayakan from Vadadesa decided to leave his place where he was the source of enmity among his sisters and go to Madurai.  On the way he saw many towns like Srirangam, Trichy, Manaparai, Viralimalai on foot.  When he saw the area surrounded by mountains as borders and forested like Pachibasale, Lingam Nayak got a little confused in his mind.  Don't go to Madurai He realized that Madurai is not bigger than this beloved town.  He built the fort walls in the town he entered and later became the chief lord of the area with the permission of Tirumalainayakar.

 He named the town where he ruled as Irasai. When Lingama Nayakkan visited this area, the servant who brought milk to the palace every day milked the milk and put it in a certain place.  He found an idol hidden in the soil at that place and ordered to dig it with a spade.

 While digging, the goddess got a stone on her shoulder and blood gushed out. After taking the image, Lingam Nayakkan consecrated it on the spot.  Mariamman Natham became Mariamman who lived in Irasai Nagar.

The festival begins with the Kannimar offering theertha on the new moon day of the month of Masima.  There is Kannimar Theertha on Karanda hill near Natham. People wear yellow clothes in sandalwood temple and go in a group for a mile long to take theertha. Then there is a ceremony of planting kampam. Kampam is a tree with 3 branches.  It looks like a trident. Because Ambal wants to be with her husband for at least this fortnight, this pole is thought of as Swami and is planted at the temple entrance.

 In the beginning, hair-raising devotional rituals such as climbing the eagle tree (bald tree) and descending from the flower hole take place.

 The tall Eucalyptus tree, which is slightly tough, is carved smooth and coated with slippery substances like lamp oil and pepper mustard, which the devotees persistently climb up.

 Then they will walk down the path where 14 feet long fire gongs have been spread and pay their penance as per the Goddess' wishes.  This festival is very famous.

  Devotees pray to the goddess here to get rid of child birth, measles and physical problems.

 The devotees do things such as taking fire-lights, stepping on fire, making sugarcane cradles, climbing the neck tree, giving food to the devotees who come to the temple, etc.

  Childless people come here and pray, if they have a herbal tea, they will get a child. Many diseases abandoned by doctors are solved here. Many diseases including stomach pain are cured.

இங்கு அம்மன் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். மூலவராக உள்ள அம்மன் அன்னத்தின் மேல் அமர்ந்து காலில் அசுரனை மிதித்த நிலையில் தாழ்மலரை பணிந்த பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். இது வேறு எந்த தலத்திலும் காணமுடியாத சிறப்பம்சம் ஆகும்.*

பல நூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் வடதேசத்திலிருந்து லிங்கமநாயக்கன் என்பவன் தன்னுடைய சகோதரிகளிடையே பகை மூளவே தான் இருந்த இடத்தை விட்டு மதுரைக்குப்போக எண்ணினான். வரும் வழியில் ஸ்ரீரங்கம், திருச்சி, மணப்பாறை, விராலிமலை என நடைபயணத்தில் பல ஊர்களை கண்டான். மலைகளே எல்லைகளாய் சூழ்ந்து பச்சைபசேல் என காடுகள் வனப்புடன் வனமான அந்த பகுதியை பார்த்ததும் லிங்கம் நாயக்கன் மனதில் சிறு தடுமாற்றம். மதுரைக்கு போக வேண்டாம் மனதுக்கு பிடித்த இந்த ஊரைவிட மதுரை பெரியதல்ல என அவனுக்கு தெளிவு பிறந்தது. தான் புகுந்த ஊரிலேயே கோட்டை கொத்தளங்களை அமைத்தவன் பின்னர் திருமலைநாயக்கர் அனுமதியுடன் அப்பகுதிக்கு சிற்றரசன் ஆனான். 

தான் ஆட்சி புரிந்த ஊருக்கு இரசை என பெயரிட்டான்.லிங்கம நாயக்கன் இப்பகுதியை ஆண்டு வந்த போது, அரண்மனைக்கு பால் கொண்டு வரும் வேலைக்காரர் தினமும் பாலை கறந்து குறிப்பிட்ட இடத்தில் வைத்தவுடன் பால் குடம் காணாமல் போய்க் கொண்டே இருந்தது.மன்னனுக்கு தகவல் தெரிந்து, அந்த இடத்தைப் பார்வையிட்டான். அந்த இடத்தில் சிலை ஒன்று மண்ணில் மறைந்திருப்பது கண்டு மண்வெட்டி கொண்டு தோண்ட உத்தரவிட்டான்.

தோண்டும் போது அம்மன் தோளில் கடப்பாறை பட்டுவிட்டதால் ரத்தம் பீறிட்டது.அச்சிலையை எடுத்து மஞ்சள் நீராட்டி அந்த இடத்திலேயே லிங்கம நாயக்கன் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்தான்.ரத்தம் பீறிட்டு வெளிவந்த அம்மன் என்தால் அவ்வூர் காலப்போக்கில் நத்தம் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. இரசை நகர் குடி கொண்ட மாரியம்மன் நத்தம் மாரியம்மன் ஆனாள்

மாசிமாதம் அமாவாசை அன்று கன்னிமார்    தீர்த்தம் எடுத்து வருதலுடன் திருவிழா ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. நத்தம் அருகில் உள்ள கரந்த மலையில் கன்னிமார் தீர்த்தம் உள்ளது.சந்தன கருப்பு கோயிலில் மஞ்சள் ஆடையுடன் ஒரு மைல் நீளத்துக்கு ஒரே கூட்டமாக சென்று தீர்த்தம் எடுத்து வருவர்.பின்பு கம்பம் நடும் நிகழ்ச்சி நடக்கும்.கம்பம் என்பது ஒரே மரத்தில் 3கிளைகளையுடையதாகும். இது பார்ப்பதற்கு திரிசூலம் போன்றிருக்கும்.அம்பாள் தன் கணவரோடு இந்த பதினைந்து நாட்களுக்காவது இருக்க விரும்புவதால்தான் இந்த கம்பம் சுவாமியாக நினைக்கப்பட்டு கோயில் நுழைவில் நடப்படுகிறது.

முத்தாய்ப்பாக கழுகுமரம்(வழுக்கு மரம்) ஏறுதல், பூக்குழி இறங்குதல் என்ற மயிர் கூச்செறியும் பக்திகரமான நேர்த்திகடன்கள் நடக்கின்றன.

சற்று கடினமான உயரமான யூகலிப்டஸ் மரம் வழுவழுவென செதுக்கி விளக்கெண்ணெய்,மிளகு கடுகு ஆகிய எளிதில் வழுக்கும் பொருட்களால் பூசப்பட்ட நிலையில் பக்தர்கள் விடாப்பிடியுடன் மேலே ஏறுவார்கள். 

பின்பு 14 அடி நீள நெருப்பு கங்குகள் பரப்பப்பட்ட பாதையில் அம்மனை நினைத்தபடியே இறங்கி நடந்து தங்கள் நேர்த்திகடனை செலுத்துவார்கள். இந்த உற்சவம் மிகப் புகழ்பெற்றதாகும்.

குழந்தைவரம், அம்மைநோய், உடல் ரீதியான பிரச்சினைகள் தீர பக்தர்கள் இங்கு அம்மனை வேண்டுகின்றனர்.

தீச்சட்டி எடுத்தல், தீ மிதித்தல்,கரும்பு தொட்டில் கட்டுதல், கழு மரம் ஏறுதல்,கோயிலுக்கு வரும் பக்தர்களுக்கு அன்னதானம் அளித்தல் முதலானவற்றை பக்தர்கள் தங்கள் நேர்த்திகடன்களாக செய்கின்றனர்.

குழந்தை இல்லாதவர்கள் இங்கு வந்து வேண்டி,மூலிகை பச்சிலை உண்டால் குழந்தை பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கும்.டாக்டர்களால் கைவிடப்பட்ட பல நோய்கள் இங்கு தீர்க்கப்படுகின்றன.வயிற்று வலி உட்பட நிறைய நோய்கள் குணமாக்கப்படுகின்றன.
