Pratyangira Devi : The Goddess to Counter Black Magic 

Prathyangira Devi Temple is located at Ayyavadi near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Goddess Prathyangira is an Ugra Avatar or powerful incarnation of Mother Goddess Shakti. The most important ritual at Ayyavadi Pratyangira Devi Temple is Nikumbala Yajna performed on no moon days. It is said that Bhagvan Sri Ram performed this yajna to overcome Ravana and Indrajith.

Lord Shiva is worshiped as Agastheeswarar and Mother Goddess is also worshipped as Dharma Samvardini.

Prathyangira Devi murti is black in color wears crescent moon on the head and she holds trident, pasa, damaru and is accompanied by Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswathi.

Shiva’s manifestation of Sharabha is also worshipped in the temple. The belief is that Sharabha appeared to control the Narasimha avatar of Vishnu. Prathyangira Devi is believed to have appeared from the forehead of Sharabha.

The temple is more than 1000 years old and is associated with legends of the Mahabharata.

History 

Devi Pratyangira is the Goddess associated with eternal energy. She is manifest with a lion's face and a human body. This combination of lion and human forms is said to represent the balance of good and evil.

The Ramayana story is popular among almost everybody not only among the Hindus of India but among all people of the world.  Ravana lost his sons in the war against Lord Sri Rama barring only Indrajit known for his reputation in war craft even 

against Indira. Indrajit began performing the Nikumbala Yajna to defeat Rama and win the unjust war for his wicked father Ravana.

Kings, to win difficult wars in those days, used to create cremation grounds on eight directions and conduct the Nikumbala yajna invoking Pratyangaradevi known as Atharvana Kali.  Indrajit began this yajna.  If he completed the yajna successfully, he would become unconquerable.  Knowing his plans, Lord Sri Rama too performed special pujas to Devi. Mother Pratyangaradevi knew the purpose of both sides.  She did not want to help Indrajit as his purpose was unjust.  She blessed Lord Rama with success in the war and in rescuing Mother Sita from the captivity of Ravana.  However, as Indrajit was also Her devotee, she gave him space in the Ramayana story.

According to Hindu mythology, the anger and fury of Lord Narasimha could not be stopped after He killed King Hiranyakashipu. To calm Him down with the power of compassion, Lord Shiva took the ferocious form of Lord Sarabeshwarar. With Sri Pratyangira Devi, and Sri Soolini Durga seated on His wings, Lord Sarabeshwarar was able to calm down the anger of Lord Narasimha.

At Sri Pratyangira Devi Temple, at Kumbakonam, the Devi is seated on a chariot with 4 lions, Devi Lakshmi and Devi Saraswathi are also present on either side. Devi is Lion Faced, having 18 hands armed with weapons. This is the oldest Temple for Devi Prathiyangira and is the only Temple mentioned in the Vedas and the Agama Shastras.

No Archana or Abhishekam is performed at this Temple. Homam is only performed on Amavasya and Pournami. The Homam is perfomed with Dried Red Chillies. Sri Pratyangira Devi Homam is performed for destruction of any negative forces.

Nikumbala Yajna 

Nikumbala Yajna performed on no moon days attracts thousands of devotees. It is performed to defeat enemies, to get jobs, to progress in work and business, for early marriage and for regaining lost position and items. Those having trouble with Shani in horoscope also perform the yajna. Nikumbala Yajna is a an elaborate yajna in which 108 items are used including fruits, chilies, vegetables, nuts, silk saris etc. The wonder in this temple is that even though several bags of chillies are used in yajna, the spicy smoke emanating from the yajna doest not create any sort of problems like itching to eyes etc.

The ingredients for the homam are:

    One hundred and eight varieties of ingredients are used in the yajna as fruits,

    nine varieties of cereals,

    silk saree, ghee are offered in the flames.

    Also, large quantities of red chilies are offered into the flames.

The following are the important facts unique to this temple:

01. The prayer and Yajna  on an elaborate scale is conducted  on every Ammavasai day - It is called ''Nikumbala Yajna''. Pooja time: 8 AM till 2 PM.

02. The Pandits conduct Homam in a specially prepared Agni Gundam - a raised platform around a  big pit A huge fire is 

prepared and the Pandits, amid chanting of mantras, make offerings in the fire, besides ghee, twigs from some trees. 108 

items are used including fruits, chilies, vegetables, nuts, silk saris etc.

03. The purpose of this elaborate yajna dedicated to the goddess  is to get Her blessings. It will help the devotees  get 

jobs, win long-pending court cases, defeat enemies, succeed in business, early marriage, etc. The list does on. This Yajna is 

believed to subdue the effects of Sani (Saturn) on people who face a dead-lock in every move they make.

04. It is a matter of great interest that, unlike many Homams or Yagnas here the Pandits offer innumerable  bags of dry hot 

chillies in the  flame - agni (holy fire). Surprisingly there is no pungent  odor in the smoke   emanating from the Homa 

Gundam.

05.The dry chillies in bags used in the Homa Pooja are brought by the devotees as part of their prayer. That there is no pungent  smell emanating from the fire pit - Agni Gundam is a mystery  that can not be explained. The moot question is what suppresses the pungent odor from the dried chillies in the fire pit - Agni Gundam. It does not make the innumerable devotees uncomfortable sitting around the fire. No eye irritation, no bouts of sneezing and no running nose. It baffles the imaginations of the first comers to this temple.

    

06. Yet another strange fact about this temple that can not escape your attention is its weird location. This place of 

veneration is surrounded on all eight sides by cremation grounds - burning ghats meant for cremating the dead bodies as per Hindu rites.  As per Agama rules, with some exceptions, Hindu temples are never located or built near ''Mayanam'' or cremation grounds. Here at Ayyerkudi there are eight cremation grounds/ghats at eight different  directions.

07. There is no daily pooja protocol between Ammavasyas. However, the temple is open on regular days during certain hours as per temple  rule. No Naivaidhyam and no Deepa Aradhanai.

08. Every Ammavasai (new moon day) several thousands people visit this temple to relieve themselves of all problems through  prayer and meditation. Some times the crowd will reach 30,000 to 40,000. Many of them say that a sincere prayer at this temple definitely light up their lives and the positive results help them gain their joy, confidence and happiness back.

Festival 

       

Performing this Nikumbala Yajna is the main prayer commitment in this temple. To the best of their ability, devotees offer items needed for the Nikumbala Yagam, attend it with deep devotion and pray to the Goddess. Devotees participate in the Nikumbala Yajna to regain the position they had lost, for removal of enemy threats, relief from debt burdens, promotion in 

jobs, employment opportunities, wedding boon and progress in business.  Those afflicted with adverse aspects of Saturn-Sani 

Bhagwan also take part in the Yajna.

 கும்பகோணத்திற்கு அருகே உள்ள அய்யாவாடியில் பிரத்தியங்கிராதேவிக்கு தனிக் கோயில் உள்ளது. 

அமைவிடம்

கும்பகோணத்தில் இருந்து தென்கிழக்கே 8 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் அய்யாவாடி என்னுமிடத்தில், உப்பிலியப்பன் கோயிலிலிருந்து நாச்சியார்கோயில் செல்லும்வழியில் இக்கோயில் உள்ளது.

அம்பிகை

இங்குக் கோயில் கொண்டுள்ள தேவி சிம்ம முகத்தோடும் 18 திருக்கரங்களோடும் 4 சிம்மம் பூட்டிய ரதத்தில் இலட்சுமி சரஸ்வதியோடு காட்சி தருகிறாள். இவர் சரபேசுவரருடைய நெற்றிக் கண்ணிலிருந்து தோன்றியதாகக் கூறுவர்.

உருவ விளக்கம்

‘பத்ரம்‘ என்றால் ‘மங்களம்‘ என்பது பொருளாகும். பக்தர்களுக்கு என்றும் மங்களத்தையே அளிப்பவள் ஆதலால் சக்திக்கு பத்ரகாளி என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. இப்பத்ரகாளி அம்மனே பிரத்தியங்கிராதேவியும் ஆவாள். ப்ரத்தியங்கிரஸ், அங்கிரஸ் என்னும் இரு ரிஷிகள் இக்காளியின் மந்திரத்தினைக் கண்டுபிடித்ததால், இவரது பெயரினையும் இணைத்து பிரத்தியங்கிரா தேவி என்று அழைப்பர். தேவி ஆயிரம் திருமுகங்களும், இரண்டாயிரம் கைகளும், சிவப்பேறிய கண்கள் மூன்றும், கனத்த சரீரமும், கரிய நிறமும், நீல நிற ஆடையும் அணிந்த விஸ்வ ரூபம் தாங்கியவள். கரங்களில் சூலம், கபாலம், பாசம், டமருகம் என்னும் நால்வகை ஆயுதங்களைத் தரித்திருப்பவள். சந்திரனை தலையிலும், வராஹத்தின் கொம்பும், ஆமையும் சேர்த்து கோர்க்கப்பட்ட மாலையைக் கழுத்தினிலும் அணிந்திருப்பாள். தனிமையில் இருந்துகொண்டு எள்ளும், புஷ்பமும் கொண்டு பூஜிப்பதால் ஆனந்தம் அடைபவள். பகைவர்களை நாசம் செய்பவள். பில்லி, சூன்யம், ஏவல் போன்ற மந்திர தந்திரங்களைத் தூள் தூளாகச் செய்பவள்.[1]

சிறப்பு

தேவி மூன்று கண்கள் உடையவள். இங்கு வந்து தேவியை வழிபட்டால் எல்லா தோஷங்களும் நீங்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கை உள்ளது. அமாவாசை, பௌர்ணமி நாள்களில் வழிபாடு செய்தலைச் சிறப்பாகக் கருதுகின்றனர்.

அம்பாள் : அருள்மிகு தர்மசம்வர்த்தினி(பிரத்யங்க தேவி).

தீர்த்தம் : புத்திர தீர்த்தம்.

தலவிருட்சம் : ஆல மரம்.

தலச்சிறப்பு :  பிரத்யங்க தேவிக்கு அமாவாசை தோறும் காலை 10.00 மணி முதல் 1.00 மணி வரை  யாகம் நடைபெறும்.  இந்த யாகத்தில் கலந்து கொள்பவர்களுக்கு பகை அகலும்.  பல நன்மைகள்  கிட்டும், பஞ்சபாண்டவர்கள் வழிபட்டதால் ஐவர் பாடி எனப் பெயர் பெற்றதாக கூறுவர்.

தல வரலாறு : பஞ்சபாண்டவர்கள் தேசத்தை இழந்து, அவமானத்தை சந்தித்து, துக்கமும்  வேதனையும் பொங்க, இங்கே சுற்றித் திரிந்தனர் ஐவரும்.  சுடுகாடுகளுக்கு நடுவே இருக்கும் ஒரு  பகுதியைத் தேடி அலைந்தனர்.  இந்த ஐவரும் சகோதரர்கள்.  விலங்குகள் ஏதும் தாக்கி  இறந்துவிடுவோமோ... தேசத்தை மீட்க முடியாமல் போய்விடுமோ... என்று பயத்தில் திரிந்தனர்.   எதிரிகளால் தொல்லை நேருமோ...  என்று பதுங்கி வாழ்ந்தனர்.

நல்ல உணவும் உறங்குவதற்கு  சரியான இடமும் இல்லாததால் நோய் வந்துவிடுமோ என்று கவலைப் பட்டனர்.  செல்வச்  செழிப்புடன் தான-தருமங்களைச் செய்தபடி இருந்த நிலை மாறி, தரித்திரம் பிடித்து வாட்டுகிறதே...  என்று கிடைக்கும் உணவை சாப்பிட்டு பொழுதைக் கழித்தனர். பிரத்தியங்கராதேவியை வழிபடுங்கள்; உங்களின் அத்தனை பயத்தையும் போக்குவாள்; பலம் கூட்டுவாள்; வெற்றியைத்  தருவாள். அவளை பூஜித்து அவளின் அருளைப் பெறுங்கள் என்று அந்த சகோதரர்கள் ஐவருக்கும்  ஏற்கனவே சொல்லப்பட்டிருந்தது.

ஒரு நாள், இவர்கள் தேடி வந்த இடமும் கிடைத்தது. அங்கே  சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாகக் காட்சி தந்தாள் பிரத்தியங்கராதேவி.  இதைக் கண்டு பூரித்தவர்கள்.  தேவியை அர்ச்சித்து வழிபட பூக்களைத் தேடினர்.  அது சித்திரை மாதம் என்பதால், எங்கே தேடியும் பூக்கள் கிடைக்கவில்லை.  நொந்து போனார்கள்.  "இதென்ன சோதனை? தேவியை வணங்க, பூக்கள் கூட கிடைக்கவில்லையே" என்று வருந்தினர்.  அந்த நேரம், எதிரே ஓங்கி உயர்ந்து நிற்கும்  ஆலமரத்தைக் கண்டனர்.  இந்த மரத்தின் இலையையே பூக்களாக பாவித்து, பிரத்யங்கிரா  தேவியை தியானித்து ஆலம் இலைகளையே எடுத்து அர்ச்சித்தனர்.  அந்த இலை, ஐந்து ஐந்து இலைகளாக தேவியின் திருப்பாதங்களில் விழுந்தன.  இப்படி நெடுநாட்களாக பூஜை செய்த  பலனாக, பகைவர்களை வென்றனர்; தேசத்தை மீட்டனர்; இழந்த அதிகாரத்தைப் பெற்றனர்.   தேசமே பூரித்துப் போனது.

இந்த ஐந்து பேரும் பஞ்ச பாண்டவர்கள்.  ஐவர் வந்து பூஜித்ததால், இந்தத் தலத்துக்கு ஐவர்பாடி என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது.   இப்போது அய்யாவாடி என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.  இங்கே சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக எழுந்தருளி, தன்னை  வணங்குவோரது அனைத்து பயங்களையும் போக்கி அருள் புரிந்து வருகிறாள் பிரத்யங்கிராதேவி. கும்பகோணம் திருநாகேஸ்வரத்துக்கு அருகில் உள்ள அய்யவாடியில் குடிகொண்டிருக்கும்  தேவியின் ஆலயத்தைச் சுற்றியுள்ள பகுதிகளில் இன்றைக்கும் சுடுகாடுகள் இருக்கின்றன.
