Neempilai Mariamman, considered the sister of Samayapuram Mariamman

Veppilai Mariamman Temple is located in the town of Manapparai, 40 km from Trichy. This temple is more than 500 years old. The Veppilai Mariamman enshrined in this temple is considered to be the sister of Samayapuram Mariamman.

Once upon a time, there was a forest full of bamboo trees in this area. While someone was cutting down a bamboo tree, his axe accidentally fell under a nearby neem tree. At that moment, blood gushed out from the stone buried under the neem tree. He gathered the villagers and showed them the scene. A person in the crowd was blessed and said that he was a Mahamayi, that he had been living under this neem tree for a long time, and that if the villagers gathered together and built a temple for him and worshipped him, he would protect and bless this city.

The villagers considered the sacred stone under the neem tree to be the goddess Mari who had come to protect their clan and built a temple to worship it. The sacred stone is still located in the temple of Mariamman today. Even today, all the sacred lamp worships performed to the statue-shaped Mariamman are performed only after the sacred stone is first shown. Since the sacred stone was found under the neem tree, the name Neempilai Mariamman was derived. Since she was born on a rock to marry neem, the name of the village became Manaparai.

The sacred tree of this temple is the Neem tree. This Neem tree is depicted as a pregnant woman carrying a child in her womb. Devotees seeking the boon of a child build a cradle on this tree and place their prayers. After receiving the boon of a child, during the Chithirai festival, hundreds of people pay their vows by carrying a sugarcane cradle.

The milk jug festival held at this temple during the Chithirai festival is very popular in the surrounding areas of this city. It is a grand event when more than 20 thousand devotees come to the temple carrying milk jugs on their heads. Thousands of liters of milk are used to anoint the goddess on that day.

சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மனின் சகோதரியாக பாவிக்கப்படும் வேப்பிலை மாரியம்மன்

திருச்சியில் இருந்து 40 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் உள்ள மணப்பாறை நகரத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது வேப்பிலை மாரியம்மன் கோவில். இக்கோவில் 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு மேல் பழமையானது. இத்தலத்தில் எழுந்தருளி இருக்கும் வேப்பிலை மாரியம்மன், சமயபுரம் மாரியம்மனின் சகோதரியாக பாவிக்கப்படுகிறாள்.

முன்னொரு காலத்தில் இப்பகுதியில் மூங்கில் மரங்கள் நிறைந்த காடாக இருந்தது. மூங்கில் மரத்தை ஒருவர் வெட்டிக் கொண்டு இருந்தபோது தவறுதலாக அருகில் இருந்த வேப்பமரத்தின் அடியில் கோடாலி பட்டு விட்டது. அப்போது அந்த வேப்ப மரத்து அடியில் புதைந்து இருந்த கல்லிலிருந்து ரத்தம் பீறிட்டு கிளம்பியது. அவர் ஊர் மக்களை கூட்டி வந்து அந்த காட்சியைக் காட்டினார். அக்கூட்டத்திலிருந்த ஒருவருக்கு அருள் வந்து, தான் மகமாயி என்றும், இந்த வேம்பினடியில் நீண்ட நெடுங்காலமாகக் குடி கொண்டிருப்பதாகவும், தனக்கு ஊரார் ஒன்று கூடி ஆலயமெடுத்து வணங்கி வந்தால், இந்நகரைக் காத்து அருள்பாலிப்பேன் என்றும் கூறினார்.

ஊரார் அனைவரும் வேப்ப மரத்தினடியில் இருந்த அந்தப் புனிதக் கல்லைத் தங்களின் குலம் காக்க வந்த மாரி தெய்வமாய் எண்ணிக் கோவில் கட்டி வழிபடலாயினர். அப்புனிதக்கல் இன்றும் மாரியம்மனின் ஆலயத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இன்றும் சிலை வடிவம் கொண்ட மாரியம்மனுக்குக் காட்டும் புனித தீப ஆராதனைகள் யாவும் முதலில் அப்புனிதக் கல்லுக்குக் காட்டிய பிறகே காட்டப் படுகிறது. வேப்பமரத்தடியில் புனிதக் கல் கிடைத்ததால், வேப்பிலை மாரியம்மன் என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. வேப்பிலை மணக்க பாறையில் பிறந்தவள் என்பதால் ஊரின் பெயர் மணப்பாறை ஆகிவிட்டது.

இக்கோவிலின் தலவிருட்சம் வேப்பமரம். இந்த வேப்பமரமானது, ஒரு கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண், தனது வயிற்றில் குழந்தை சுமந்திருக்கும் தோற்றத்தில் காட்சி தருகிறது. குழந்தை வரம் வேண்டும் பக்தர்கள், இந்த மரத்தில் தொட்டில் கட்டி தங்கள் வேண்டுதலை வைக்கிறார்கள். குழந்தை வரம் பெற்றவுடன், சித்திரைத் திருவிழாவின் போது, நூற்றுக்கணக்கானோர், கரும்புத் தொட்டில் எடுத்து தங்கள் நேர்த்திக்கடனை செலுத்துகிறார்கள்

இந்தக் கோவிலில் நடைபெறும் சித்திரை திருவிழாவின் போது நடைபெறும் பால்குட விழா, இந்த நகரின் சுற்று வட்டாரத்தில் மிகவும் பிரபலம். 20 ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட பக்தர்கள், தங்கள் தலையில் பால் குடம் சுமந்து கோவிலுக்கு வருவது மிகவும் பிரம்மாண்டமான நிகழ்ச்சியாக இருக்கும். பல ஆயிரக்கணக்கான லிட்டர் பாலால் அன்று அம்மனுக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்யப்படும்.
