Sri Samravattam Ayyappa Temple, Tirur, Malappuram
This is a famous Shasta temple situated on the banks of Bharathapuzha (Nila River) about 12-15 km from Tirur in Malabar. The temple can also be reached by boat from Ponnani village. The mighty Bharathapuzha river flowing behind this temple and the vast paddy fields that represent a rich agricultural culture make this temple very beautiful. The temple is believed to have been built by a master craftsman and renowned sculptor, Perumtachan.
Shasta was born as the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini, an incarnation of Vishnu, and he had two wives. These wives are known as Poorna and Pushkalai in some parts and Prabha and Satyaka in others. Shasta's incarnation, Ayyappa, was the prince of Pandalam and remained a celibate.
In the Samravattam temple, the deity is enshrined at the river level, even though the temple is situated at a slightly higher elevation. During the rainy season, flood waters enter the temple and submerge the idol. There are many stories describing the power of this god, who is known as Samravattappa. People believe that worshipping the Shasta at Samravattam on Saturdays helps in getting rid of the evil effects of bad times caused by Saturn. The Thamarakulangarak Shasta temple near Tripunithura is considered to be an extension of this temple.
Legend:
This is one of the oldest Shasta temples located on a small island in the Bharatapuzha river in Samravattam. The actual year the temple was built is unknown. It is said that thousands of years ago, a sage named 'Samparan' came to this place and saw a peaceful, beautiful island on the banks of the Bharatapuzha. He thought it was the best place for his meditation. At the end of his long meditation, he saw a bright light ahead. He thought that 'Vishnu' was going to appear before him. He meditated on Vishnu. But the light was still there. Then he thought that it was the presence of Lord Shiva. The light did not disappear. Then he thought of Ganesha, Subramaniar, and Goddess Durga. Finally he realized that Shasta was there with his wife Prabha and son Satyaka. Then Shasta's light disappeared.. He approached Karanavar of Kuttiseri Mana on the banks of Bharatapuzha. Sampara explained his rare experiences and asked him to build a temple on the island. He also instructed him in the rituals of worship and left from there. The place where Sage Sampara saw the cut was earlier called Samparavettam, which later became Samravattam.
Deities:
Apart from Shastha, the main sanctum sanctorum houses Vishnu, Ganapati, Lord Shiva, Prabha, Durga and Sathyakari. Apart from Ganapati, Sathyakan, Durga, Bhadrakali and Lord Shiva are installed in the south-western part of the sanctum sanctorum. Along with the Shastha Ushabuja, pujas to the deities are performed daily.
Festivals:
The main festivals of the temple are held during the Mandala period, especially the last 11 days (from 1 to 11 of the Malayalam month of Dhanu). The temple authorities also arrange free accommodation and food for Sabarimala pilgrims during this season. There is a procession during Ejunallippoo, but elephants are not used here. Another important day is Prathishtayanam. This is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram Anizham. On that day, there will be a Navagam
