Chokkanathar Temple, Thiruvidaimarudur, Thanjavur

Chokkanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thiruvidaimarudur Town in Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk in Thanjavur District in Tamil Nadu. Thiruvidaimarudur is considered as equivalent to Kasi. This Temple is considered as one of temples of Pancha Linga Sthalams of Thiruvidaimarudur. The Temple is situated in the north street of Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple.

Legends

Brahmmahathi Dosham:

Pandyan King, Varaguna, who, according to tradition, lived in the seventh century A.D. Once he went for hunting in a nearby forest and when he started back home, dusk had already fallen. The horse, fatigued by the hunt, was anxious to get back to the stables, and literally flew over the path. Meanwhile an aged Brahmin, also travelling through the forest, had called it a day and was lying fast asleep under the shelter of a large tree. 

Unfortunately, the path which the King’s horse took was led over the very place where the old man lay sleeping. The hooves of the horse crushed his chest, and he perished on the spot. So fast was horse that the King had no inkling of this terrible calamity. Only when the soldiers following him saw the dead Brahmin and informed him, did the King come to know of the tragedy. 

He lost no time in observing the penances and sacrifices ordained in the shastras for absolution from this sin; but the damage was done Brahmmahathi (spirit of the dead Brahmana) clung to him all the more tightly. In despair, the King sought the help of Lord Sundareswarar of Madurai. One day, when he was circumambulating the shrine, a divine voice stated him that a Chola King will invade your Kingdom soon. Fight him and he will be defeated. 

As he flees back to his country, chase him without harming him. He will lead you to Thiruvidaimarudur where Lord Shiva himself worshipped his own image. The Sin clinging to you now will leave you by praying to Lord Shiva there. The King then visited the temple at Thiruvidaimarudur as per the divine guidance and prayed to Lord Mahalingeswarar. He entered the temple through the Eastern entrance and the Brahmmahathi could not enter the temple and waited outside the temple for the King to return. 

As advised by Mahalingaswamy, the King left by the Western Gopuram (Tower) and hence got rid of the Brahmmahathi dosham and the Brahmin’s ghost. The Brahmmahathi is waiting outside still in the south ornamental entrance (south Torana Vayil) with head disheveled and face immersed betwixt the knees. The king was relieved of his malady. 

As he prayed to Lord Chokkanathar sincerely for his relief. In gratitude, Varaguna Pandya built a temple dedicated to Chokkanathar on the northern entrance of the Temple. Those who are visiting this Temple, should make it a point to enter through the main entrance to Shiva shrine, then to Goddess shrine and return by a different entrance to get rid of one’s Dhoshams. 

Unique Abhishekam:

One of the interesting beliefs held here is that an Abhishekam performed to Chokkanathar to the accompaniment of the megaraagakurinji raagam would result in a bountiful monsoon.

Adi Devatha of Uthirada Nakshatra, Vishwadeva worshipped Lord Chokkanathar of this Temple. Uthirada Starrers and Magara Rasi people can worship Lord Shiva of this Temple for benefits and relief from Dhoshams.

The Temple

This is an east facing temple with an entrance arch. Stucco image of Mother Meenakshi marriage posture can be seen at the top of the entrance arch. Presiding Deity is called as Chokkanathar / Sundareswarar. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of Lingam. Lord Vinayaga and Lord Murugan can be found at the entrance of the sanctum. Mother is called as Meenakshi. She is housed in a separate south facing shrine. There is a separate east facing shrine housing Ashta Dasa Bhuja Maha Lakshmi Durga in the north western corner of the Temple premises. Rahu Kaala Pooja is famous in this shrine.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Thiruvidaimarudur Bus Stop, 1 Km from Thiruvidaimarudur Railway Station, 3 Kms from Thirubuvanam, 3 Kms from Govindapuram, 4 Kms from Aduthurai, 6 Kms from Thirunageswaram, 10 Kms from Kumbakonam, 10 Kms from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 10 Kms from Kumbakonam Railway Stattion, 10 Kms from Thiruvavaduthurai, 27 Kms from Mayiladuthurai, 51 Kms from Thanjavur and 105 Kms from Trichy Airport.

By Road:

Thiruvidaimarudur is situated to the north of Kumbakonam city on the road to Mayiladuthurai. All the buses pass via this route with a stop closer to the temple at Thiruvidaimarudur. Town buses are available from Kumbakonam. The route numbers are 1,27, 33, 54, & 64. Autos / Taxies are available to reach this Temple from Kumbakonam. 

By Train:

There is a small railway station at Thiruvidaimarudur on the Kumbakonam – Mayiladuthurai section of the Southern Railway. Only the passenger trains stop there. The nearest convenient railway station is located at Kumbakonam with connectivity to Chennai (via Trichy), Thirunelveli (via Dindigul, Madurai), Coimbatore (Satapthi), Mysore (Via Erode - Salem - Bangalore). 

By Air:

Trichy Airport is the nearest international airport.

புராண முக்கியத்துவம்  

1. பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷம்: பாண்டிய மன்னன் வரகுணன், வேட்டையாடித் திரும்பும் போது தற்செயலாக ஒரு வயதான பிராமணனைக் கொன்றதாகக் கூறப்படும் புராணக்கதையுடன் தொடர்புடையது இந்தக் கோயில். பாவத்திற்கு பரிகாரம் செய்ய தவம் மற்றும் யாகங்கள் செய்த போதிலும், இறந்த பிராமணனின் (பிரம்மஹத்தி) ஆவியால் மன்னர் பாதிக்கப்பட்டார். நிவாரணம் தேடி, அவர் மதுரை சுந்தரேஸ்வரரின் வழிகாட்டுதலை நாடினார், அவர் ஒரு சோழ மன்னனை எதிர்கொண்டு, அவரைத் திருவிடைமருதூர் வரை துரத்திச் சென்று, மகாலிங்கேஸ்வரரை வேண்டிக்கொள்ளும்படி அறிவுறுத்தினார். இந்த வழிமுறைகளைப் பின்பற்றி, கிழக்கு நுழைவாயில் வழியாக கோயிலுக்குள் நுழைந்து, மேற்கு வாசல் வழியாக வெளியேறியதன் மூலம், மன்னன் தனது சாபத்திலிருந்து விடுபட்டான்.
2. சொக்கநாதர் கோயில் கட்டுமானம்:வரகுண பாண்டியன் தனது நிவாரணத்திற்கு நன்றி செலுத்தும் வகையில், மகாலிங்கேஸ்வரர் கோயிலின் வடக்கு வாசலில் சொக்கநாதருக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட கோயிலைக் கட்டினார். இந்த ஆலயம் மக்கள் தங்கள் தோஷங்களிலிருந்து (ஆன்மிக துன்பங்கள்) நிவாரணம் பெறக்கூடிய இடமாக கருதப்படுகிறது.
3. அபிஷேகப் பாரம்பரியம்: கோவிலில் உள்ள ஒரு தனித்துவமான பாரம்பரியம் என்னவென்றால், "மேகராகக்குறிஞ்சி ராகம்" பாடும் போது சொக்கநாதருக்கு அபிஷேகம் (சடங்கு ஸ்நானம்) செய்வதால், பருவமழை பெய்யும்.
4. விஸ்வதேவர் வழிபாடு: உத்திராட நட்சத்திரத்தின் ஆதி தெய்வமான விஸ்வதேவரின் வழிபாட்டுடன் இக்கோயில் தொடர்புடையது. உத்திராட நட்சத்திரம் மற்றும் மகர ராசியில் (மகரம்) பிறந்தவர்கள் இந்த கோவிலில் சிவனை வழிபடுவது நன்மை மற்றும் தோஷங்களிலிருந்து விடுபட ஊக்குவிக்கப்படுகிறது.
5. கோயில் விவரம்: 1500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலான பழமையான கோயில் கிழக்கு நோக்கி உள்ளது. இது உச்சியில் திருமண தோரணையில் அன்னை மீனாட்சியின் ஸ்டக்கோ உருவத்துடன் கூடிய நுழைவு வளைவைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. மூலவராகிய சொக்கநாதர் (சுந்தரேசுவரர்) லிங்கமாக காட்சியளிக்கிறார். கருவறையின் வாசலில் விநாயகரும் (விநாயகரும்) முருகனும் உள்ளனர். அன்னை மீனாட்சிக்கு கோயில் வளாகத்தில் தெற்கு நோக்கி தனி சன்னதி உள்ளது. கூடுதலாக, கோயில் வளாகத்தின் வடமேற்கு மூலையில் அஷ்ட தசா புஜ மஹா லக்ஷ்மி துர்க்கைக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட சன்னதி உள்ளது.
6. ராகு கால பூஜை: இந்த கோவில் ராகு கால பூஜையை கடைபிடிப்பதற்காக அறியப்படுகிறது.

சொக்கநாதர் கோயில் சமய முக்கியத்துவம் மற்றும் வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த தலமாகும், ஆன்மீக துன்பங்களில் இருந்து நிவாரணம் மற்றும் சிவபெருமான் மற்றும் இக்கோயிலுடன் தொடர்புடைய தெய்வங்களின் ஆசீர்வாதங்களைத் தேடும் பக்தர்களை ஈர்க்கிறது.
