Apparswami Temple, Mylapore, Chennai

Apparswami Temple is a Hindu temple built in honour of Apparswami, a 19th-century Saivite saint, located in Mylapore in Chennai City in Tamilnadu. The temple, situated on Royapettah High Road, is built around his tomb over which a Shivalinga was set up by his chief devotee Chidambaraswamy. The Temple is located just opposite Sanskrit College.

Legends

The history of Hinduism is made rich and inspiring by stories of famous saints and spiritual leaders. The hardship they endured and the goals they achieved is the force that drives our religion. Mylapore, a locality in Chennai, predates British rule by several centuries. It was historically known as Vedapuri. As the available historical and archaeological evidence show, it could well be the oldest part of Chennai, with written records of early settlements going back to the first century BC.

This temple-oriented locality housed one of the great saints. Saint Appar Swamy was a great devotee of Lord Siva. He spent all his time in meditation and the pursuit of salvation. One day while Saint Appar Swamy was in deep meditation, an Englishman was passing by. Without realizing the dedication of Saint Appar Swamy, the Englishman mocked the saint in his effort to realize God. Soon the Englishman returned to England. There he suffered a paralytic stroke. 

While he lay recovering, he realized the error of mocking the holy man. He understood the purity of the saint's efforts and wanted to make amends. The Englishman returned to Mylapore and went to where the saint was meditating. He fell at his feet and asked for forgiveness. Saint Appar Swamy, who was ready to leave this body, asked the Englishman to provide him a place where the saint to attain Jeeva Samadhi ("becoming one" with the universal consciousness). The Englishman made arrangements for the land. Saint Appar Swamy accepted the land and entered Jeeva Samadhi.

The sincere remorse shown by the Englishman was rewarded. He fully recovered from his paralytic stroke. After Saint Appar Swamy went into the samadi, his closest disciple, Chidambaraswamy, worked towards building a temple for his master. He installed a large Siva Linga on top of the samadi. This is how the Apparswami temple came into being. 

History

Appar swamigal is a Siddhar lived during 19th century in British period. He attained Jeeva Samadhi in the year 1851 and his disciple Chidambaram swamigal built this temple in the year 1853.  

The Temple

Apparswami Temple is a Hindu temple built in honour of Apparswami, a 19th-century Saivite saint. Presiding Deity is called as Viswanathar and Mother is called as Visalakshi. Presiding Deity Viswanathar is on the Jeeva Samadhi of Sri Appar Swamigal. Vinayagar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai are the Koshta Idols located on the Sanctum Walls. The temple is today a focal point in the community for devotees of Lord Siva. Dwajasthambam palipeedam and Nandhi are in the outer prakaram.

Also, Nagars, Thiyanamandabam and Jaya Ganapathi can be found in the prakaram. Veerapathirar, a Shiva lingam, Sandikeswarar and Urchavars (Appar swamigal in sitting posture) can be found in the inner prakaram. Navagrahas, Thayumanavar, Sekkizhar, Naalvar and Kala Bairavar can be found in the front mandapam. At the front of mandapam on the left Neethi Vinayagar is located on the left side of the front mandapam and Valli Devasena Subramaniyar is located on the right side of the front mandapam.

The temple is kept open between 07.00 AM to 12.00 Noon and 04.30 PM to 09.00 PM.

Festivals

The temple observes and celebrates all the important festivals and Sevas of Lord Siva. 

Prayers

Of all the rituals that are performed at this temple, one of the most important is the practice of removing the effects of "evil eye" on a devotee. People come from far to take the priest's blessings and pray for their well-being.

The Apparswami Temple is located in Mylapore, Chennai just opposite to the Mylapore Sanskrit College (Royapettah High Road). The Temple is located opposite to Sanskrit College Bus Stop. The Temple is located at about 350 meters from Mundakkanni Koil Railway Station, 650 meters from Mylapore Bus Stop and 400 meters from Mylapore Railway Station. Mylapore is located a few kilometers to the south of the British-built Chennai city. It lies between Triplicane and Teynampet in the west then across to the coast in the east. 

It is bounded by Royapettah to the north. Its southern frontier corresponds roughly with that of the River Adyar. It extends for around 4 km from north to south and 2 km from east to west. Mylapore is in the heart of Chennai city and is linked with local trains and bus facilities. Mylapore is located at about 5 Kms from Triplicane, 3 Kms from Teynampet, 2.5 Kms from Royapettah, 6 Kms from Adyar, 6 Kms from T Nagar, 3 Kms from Marina Beach, 3 Kms from Santhome, 3 Kms from Alwarpet, 5 Kms from Nungambakkam and 7 Kms from Kodambakkam.

Mylapore is connected to other parts of the city by MTC buses, with connections including Chennai Central, T. Nagar, Tambaram, Broadway. Mylapore is located at about 10 Kms from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.

11 செப்டம்பர் 2022 அன்று, “திருவொற்றியூர் மாவீரர் கற்களும் சித்தர்களும்” நிகழ்ச்சியின் ஒரு பகுதியாக, திருவொற்றியூரில் உள்ள அப்பர் நகரில் உள்ள ஸ்ரீ அப்பர்சுவாமி திருக்கோயிலுக்குச் சென்றேன். விஜயம் முக்கியமாக திருவொற்றியூர் சித்தர் ஜீவ சமாதிகளை மையமாகக் கொண்டது, மற்றொரு வழியில், நான் இந்த கோவிலின் ஸ்ரீ அப்பர் ஸ்வாமியை தரிசனம் செய்தேன்.

இந்த கோவிலின் சில முக்கிய அம்சங்கள்...

கோயில் கிழக்கு நோக்கியவாறு நுழைவாயிலைக் கொண்டுள்ளது (ஆக்கிரமிப்பு காரணமாக பாதி மட்டுமே தெரியும்). உமா மகேஸ்வரராக சிவன் மற்றும் பார்வதியின் ஸ்டக்கோ படம் நுழைவாயிலின் மேல் உள்ளது. கருவறை வாசலில் விநாயகர் மற்றும் ஸ்ரீ வள்ளி தேவசேனா முருகன் உள்ளனர். கருவறையில் உள்ள மூலவர் சற்று உயரமானவர். கோஸ்டாக்கள் படங்கள் இல்லாமல் காலியாக உள்ளன.

சில தளர்வான சிற்பங்களும், அப்பர் (மூலவர் முகமாக) அர்த்த மண்டபத்தில் உள்ளன. அர்த்த மண்டபத்தில் தெற்கு நோக்கிய தனி சந்நிதியில் அம்பாள்.

மகா மண்டபத்தில் பலிபீடம், ரிஷபம், சப்தகன்னிகள், நாகாத்தம்மன் உள்ளனர்.

இக்கோயில் கருவறை, அந்தரளம், அர்த்த மண்டபம் மற்றும் மகா மண்டபம் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. கோவில் முற்றிலும் செங்கற்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது. அர்த்த மண்டபம் வ்ருத தூண்களால் தாங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

கருவறை மூன்று பட்டா குமுதத்துடன் கூடிய பாத பந்த அதிஷ்டானத்தில் உள்ளது (இப்போது பட்டிகா மட்டம் வரை தரைமட்டம் உயர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளது). கலசம், குடம், மண்டி, பலகை, பொத்தியல் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்ட பிரம்ம காண்ட பைலஸ்டர்கள் பிட்டியில் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளன. பிரஸ்தாரம் வலபி, கபோதம், பூமி தேசம் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்டது. கருவறையில் இரண்டு அடுக்கு திராவிட விமானம் உள்ளது. தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி, மகா விஷ்ணு மற்றும் பிரம்மா ஆகியோரின் ஸ்டக்கோ படங்கள் விமானம் சால கோஸ்தாக்களின் முதல் மட்டத்தில் உள்ளன. விமானத்தில் வேறு ஸ்டக்கோ படங்கள் எதுவும் காணப்படவில்லை.

 அப்பர் சுவாமிகள் என்கிற திருநாவுக்கரசு சுவாமிகள் பல சிவாலயங்களுக்குச் சென்று திருவொற்றியூர் வந்ததாக நம்பப்படுகிறது . சிவபெருமான் இத்தலத்தில் அப்பர் தரிசனம் தந்தார். சிவபெருமான் தரிசனம் தந்த அதே இடத்தில் அப்பர் சுவாமிகள் சிவலிங்கத்தை நிறுவி வழிபட்டார். பின்னர் கருவறையில் சிவலிங்கத்தை வைத்து கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது.

திருவொற்றியூர் வந்த பாம்பன் சுவாமிகள் இக்கோயிலில் சில நாட்கள் தங்கி தியானம் செய்ததாக கூறப்படுகிறது.
