Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, Shenbagapuram, Nagapattinam
Adi Kumbeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Vinayaga located in Shenbagapuram Village near Mohanur in Kilvelur Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. Lord Vinayaga of this temple is called as Adi Kumbeswarar in the name of his father, Lord Shiva. This temple is believed to be around 500 years old.
Legends
Once, Sage Narada visited the celestial court of Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash to present to him a fruit, the Gyana Pazham (the fruit of knowledge). Lord Shiva intended to share the fruit among his two sons, Ganesha and Murugan but the sage Narada was against the idea of cutting it. Lord Shiva decided to award it to whichever of his two sons first circled the world thrice.
Accepting the challenge, Karthikeya started his journey around the globe on his mount peacock. However, Ganesha, who surmised that the world was no more than his parents Shiva and Shakti combined, circumambulated them. Pleased with their son's discernment, Lord Shiva awarded the fruit to Ganesha. When Kartikeya returned, he was furious to learn that his efforts had been in vain.
He left Kailash and took up his abode in the Palani hills in South India. Lord Ganesha felt that he ought to have yielded to his brother and sacrificed the fruit for his brother. Lord Ganesha was unable to bear the separation from his brother. Hence, he decided to perform penance for offending his brother. He could not be stopped by his parents. So, Lord Shiva advised him to perform penance in this place dense with Shenbaga trees.
Lord Shiva came to this region to protect his son at the request of Mother Parvathi. Lord Shiva set himself in five places in the form of five Lingams representing the Pancha Boodhas (water, fire, space, wind and earth). The five temples housing these Lingams are situated around Shenbagapuram. They are;
1. Shenbagapuram Thirumoolanathar Temple
2. Mohanur Adi Kumbeswarar Temple
3. Singamangalam Shivapureeswarar Temple
4. Killukudi Agastheeswarar Temple
5. Anaikudi Somanathar Temple
Astonishingly, there are no temples located between these temples and this temple confirming that these five Lords stand as protectors to Vinayaga of this temple. Lord Shiva conferred the title of Eshwara to Ganesha after his penance and requested his son to raise as a Swayambhu Moorthy in this temple and bless the devotees in his place. Thus, the Vinayaga came to be called as Adi Kumbeswara. The shape of the Vinayaga is slightly irregular in this temple.
The Temple
This Temple is facing towards east. The temple consists of sanctum and mukha mandapam. The sanctum enshrines the presiding deity, Vinayaga under the name Adi Kumbeswarar. Lord Vinayaga is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested). He is worshipped as Lord Shiva in this temple. The shape of the Vinayaga in this temple is slightly irregular in this temple.
The vimana over the sanctum has stucco images of Lord Shiva on the right, Lord Vishnu on the back and Lord Brahma on the left. Sthala Vriksham of this Temple is Arasu and Neem trees. An idol of Naga can be seen below the Arasu Tree. There is a unique lamp in the form of dancing snake in front of this Naga idol. Devotees having sarpa dosha offer special prayers in this shrine.

The temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.30 PM and 04.00 PM and 08.00 PM.

Vinayaka Chathurthi and Tirukarthikai are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
Prayers
Special Ekadasa Rudra Japam is performed in this temple during the waxing moon period (Sukla Paksha or Valar Pirai) on the Poosam star in the month of Aani (Jun-Jul). Eleven (Ekadasam means eleven in Sanskrit) priests chant Shri Rudram eleven times during this Rudra Japam. It is said that listening to this Ekadasa Rudra Japam would cleanse the devotees from all his sins. Devotees pray here for relief from their sins and seek mental peace.

The temple is located at about 10 Kms from Kilvelur Railway Station, 11 Kms from Kilvelur, 15 Kms from Katchanam, 20 Kms from Thiruvarur, 20 Kms from Nagapattinam, 26 Kms from Thiruvarur Bus Stand and 144 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated at about 3 Kms from Killukudi on the Kilvelur to Katchanam route. Frequent buses are not available to reach this temple from Thiruvarur and Kilvelur

ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரர் கோயில் தமிழ்நாட்டின் நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள கீழ்வேளூர் தாலுகாவில் மோகனூர் அருகே செண்பகபுரம் கிராமத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள விநாயகப் பெருமானுக்கு அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு இந்து கோயிலாகும். இக்கோயிலின் விநாயகப் பெருமான் தனது தந்தையான சிவபெருமானின் பெயரால் ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரர் என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறார். இக்கோவில் சுமார் 500 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையானது என நம்பப்படுகிறது.
ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரர் கோவில், செண்பகபுரம் - புராணங்கள்
ஒருமுறை, நாரத முனிவர் கைலாச மலையில் உள்ள சிவபெருமானின் தேவாலயத்திற்கு ஞானப்பழம் (அறிவின் பழம்) ஒன்றை பரிசளிக்க சென்றார். சிவபெருமான் தனது இரண்டு மகன்களான விநாயகர் மற்றும் முருகன் ஆகியோருக்கு பழத்தை பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள விரும்பினார், ஆனால் நாரத முனிவர் அதை வெட்டுவதற்கான யோசனைக்கு எதிராக இருந்தார். சிவபெருமான் தனது இரு மகன்களில் யாருக்கு முதலில் உலகை மூன்று முறை சுற்றினாரோ அவருக்கு அதை வழங்க முடிவு செய்தார்.
சவாலை ஏற்று, கார்த்திகேயா தனது மயிலின் மீது உலகம் முழுவதும் தனது பயணத்தைத் தொடங்கினார். இருப்பினும், தனது பெற்றோர்களான சிவனும் சக்தியும் இணைந்ததை விட உலகம் இல்லை என்று கருதிய விநாயகர், அவர்களைச் சுற்றி வந்தார். மகனின் அறிவுத்திறனைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்த சிவபெருமான் விநாயகருக்கு அந்தப் பழத்தை வழங்கினார். கார்த்திகேயன் திரும்பி வந்தபோது, அவன் முயற்சி வீண் போனதை அறிந்து கோபமடைந்தான்.
அவர் கைலாசத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறி தென்னிந்தியாவில் உள்ள பழனி மலையில் தனது வசிப்பிடத்தை மேற்கொண்டார். விநாயகப் பெருமான் தன் சகோதரனுக்கு அடிபணிந்து தன் சகோதரனுக்காக பழத்தை தியாகம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று உணர்ந்தார். விநாயகப் பெருமான் தன் சகோதரனைப் பிரிந்ததைத் தாங்க முடியவில்லை. எனவே, அவர் தனது சகோதரனை புண்படுத்தியதற்காக தவம் செய்ய முடிவு செய்தார். பெற்றோரால் தடுக்க முடியவில்லை. எனவே, செண்பக மரங்கள் அடர்ந்த இத்தலத்தில் தவம் செய்யுமாறு சிவபெருமான் அறிவுறுத்தினார்.
அன்னை பார்வதியின் வேண்டுகோளுக்கு இணங்க சிவபெருமான் தனது மகனைக் காக்க இப்பகுதிக்கு வந்தார். சிவபெருமான் பஞ்ச பூதங்களை (நீர், நெருப்பு, விண்வெளி, காற்று மற்றும் பூமி) குறிக்கும் ஐந்து லிங்கங்களின் வடிவத்தில் ஐந்து இடங்களில் தன்னை அமைத்தார். செண்பகபுரத்தைச் சுற்றிலும் இந்த லிங்கங்கள் அடங்கிய ஐந்து கோவில்கள் உள்ளன. அவர்கள்;
1. செண்பகபுரம் திருமூலநாதர் கோவில்
2. மோகனூர் ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரர் கோவில்
3. சிங்கமங்கலம் சிவபுரீஸ்வரர் கோவில்
4. கிள்ளுக்குடி அகஸ்தீஸ்வரர் கோவில்
5. ஆனைக்குடி சோமநாதர் கோவில்
வியக்கத்தக்க வகையில், இந்தக் கோயில்களுக்கும் இந்தக் கோயிலுக்கும் இடையில் எந்தக் கோயில்களும் இல்லை என்பது இந்தக் கோயிலின் விநாயகப் பெருமானின் பாதுகாவலர்களாக இந்த ஐந்து ஸ்வாமிகளும் நிற்பதை உறுதிப்படுத்துகிறது. சிவபெருமான் தனது தவம் முடிந்து விநாயகருக்கு ஈஸ்வர பட்டத்தை அளித்து, தனது மகனை இக்கோயிலில் சுயம்பு மூர்த்தியாக எழுப்பி, பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள்பாலிக்கும்படி வேண்டினார். இதனால், விநாயகர் ஆதி கும்பேஸ்வரர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார். இக்கோயிலில் விநாயகரின் வடிவம் சற்று ஒழுங்கற்றது.
கருவறைக்கு மேல் உள்ள விமானத்தில் வலதுபுறம் சிவபெருமான், பின்புறம் விஷ்ணு மற்றும் இடதுபுறம் பிரம்மா ஆகியோரின் ஸ்டக்கோ படங்கள் உள்ளன. இக்கோயிலின் ஸ்தல விருட்சம் அரசு மற்றும் வேப்ப மரங்கள் ஆகும். அரசு மரத்தின் கீழே நாக சிலை உள்ளது. இந்த நாக விக்கிரகத்தின் முன் நடனமாடும் பாம்பு வடிவில் ஒரு தனித்துவமான விளக்கு உள்ளது. சர்ப்ப தோஷம் உள்ள பக்தர்கள் இக்கோயிலில் சிறப்பு வழிபாடு செய்கின்றனர்.

கோவில் காலை 06.00 மணி முதல் மதியம் 12.30 மணி வரையிலும், மாலை 04.00 மணி மற்றும் இரவு 08.00 மணி வரையிலும் திறந்திருக்கும்.

விநாயக சதுர்த்தியும், திருக்கார்த்திகையும் கோவிலில் கொண்டாடப்படும் விழாக்கள்.
பிரார்த்தனைகள்
ஆனி மாதத்தில் (ஜூன்-ஜூலை) பூசம் நட்சத்திரத்தன்று வளர்பிறை அமாவாசை (சுக்ல பக்ஷ அல்லது வளர் பிறை) இந்த கோயிலில் சிறப்பு ஏகாதச ருத்ர ஜபம் செய்யப்படுகிறது. பதினோரு (ஏகாதசம் என்றால் சமஸ்கிருதத்தில் பதினொன்று என்று பொருள்) அர்ச்சகர்கள் இந்த ருத்ர ஜபத்தின் போது பதினொரு முறை ஸ்ரீ ருத்ரம் ஜபிக்கிறார்கள். இந்த ஏகாதச ருத்ர ஜபம் கேட்பதால் பக்தர்கள் செய்த பாவங்கள் அனைத்தும் நீங்கும் என்பது ஐதீகம். பக்தர்கள் தங்கள் பாவங்களில் இருந்து விடுபடவும், மன அமைதிக்காகவும் இங்கு பிரார்த்தனை செய்கிறார்கள்.
