Shri Adi Badri Vishnu Temple

Shri Adi Badri Vishnu Temple,  564G+FHQ, NH109, Aadibadri, Uttarakhand 246440 The Adi Badri is a 16 temple complex and first built among the Sapta Badri temples is an ancient shrine dedicated to Vishnu in Uttarakhand.

The first temple amongst the Panch Badri, Adi Badri is situated 17 kms away from Karnaprayag near Chulakot 3 kilometers away from Chandpur Garhi. Its nearest pilgrimage site is Karnaprayag. Devotees offered prayers when Badrinath became inaccessible during the winter season.  .

As per  Legend these temples were built by the Pandavas who came to Uttarakhand on the Swargarohini Path. It is also said that it was built by Shankaracharya in the 8th century. According to the Archaeological Survey of India, they were built by Katyuri kings between 8th to 11th century. The care of these temples has been under the Indian Archaeological Survey for some years.Seven temples of this chain were built during the late Gupta period (5th century to 8th century)  

The main temple of the complex is dedicated to Lord Vishnu that is built on a raised platform with a small enclosure of a pyramidal shape. The temple has a black stone image of Vishnu, which depicts him holding a mace, lotus and chakra. According to Hindu scriptures, this temple shall be named as Yogi Badri when the Bhavishya Badri will have the same stature as that of Badrinath in future.

Adi Badri, also known as Helisera according to revenue records, is a tiny temple complex. The chief temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is built over a raised platform, with a small enclosure in a pyramidal form. The sanctum holds black stone 3 ft image of Vishnu. The image depicts Vishnu holding a mace, lotus and chakra (discus) Brahmins from South India serve as chief priests in the temple.

Originally there were 16 temples in this group, of which 14 still survive. The main temple is of Lord Vishnu, whose identity is its large size and being built on a high platform. A beautiful one meter high black Shaligram idol of the Lord standing in his four-armed form is located inside the sanctum sanctorum. The doors of Adi Badri temple are closed for the month of Pausha and the doors of the temple are opened on the day of Makar Sankranti. 

A small temple in front of it is dedicated to Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Other temples in the group are dedicated to other deities like Satyanarayan, Lakshmi, Annapurna, Chakbhan, Kuber (without idol), Ram-Lakshman-Sita, Kali, Lord Shiva, Gauri, Shankar and Hanuman. There are intricate and detailed carvings on these stone temples and the feeling of carving on each temple is specific to that temple and also different from others.

Worship is still held here and the Vishnu temple is looked after by Chakradatt Thapliyal, who is a resident of nearby Thapli village. The Brahmins of Thapli village have been the priests of this temple for the last seven hundred years.
