Kidangoor Subramanya Swamy Temple 10 kilometers southeast of Ettumanoor.

This temple is one of the ancient temples of Kerala. The Kidangur Subramanya Swami temple is situated in Kottayam District. It is a kilometer away from the Ettumanur-Punjar Highway by the south side of Kidangur- Manarkad road. It is believed that the idol of Subramanya Swami came out of the ‘Kamandulu’ or pot carried by Maharshi Gauna when it tilted and the water flowed out. Along with the flow of the water, the vigraha was carried away to the Vishnukshetra in Kidangur. Inside the temple where a new Sree Kovil was built for Lord Vishnu, the temple officials felt the presence of Subramanya Swami and so they kept the Subramanya Vigraha there instead of Vishnu. So along with the Vishnu Vigraha on the northern side the Subramanya vigraha was also consecrated in the new Sree Kovil.

Kidangur is historically one of the 64 villages of the Namboodiris. It was the boundary of the Thekkumkur- Vadakkumkur kings. The 14 Brahmin families of Kidangur were the owners of this temple. Out of the 14 Brahmin families some did not have male discendents, so those who had male members became the sole owners of this temple even to the present day.

Koothambalam -Bharata Muni’s concept of Natya Shastra is evident in the sculptural work inside the Kuthambalam. So this is different from all other Kuthambalams of various temples of Kerala. It is believed that the Kuthambalam was constructed by Perunthachan. The scenes from Ramayana and mahabharatha are beautifully sculpture

tured on the Rangamandapam of the Kuthambalam. There is a huge pillar curved out of the wood of “Kurumthotti” – a medicinal plant. Inside the hall there is a vigraha of Devi Bhuvaneswari. Women are not allowed to enter the Kuthambalam and the ‘Na/amba/am’. ‘Koothu’ and ‘Koodiyattom’ are perfonned inside the Koothambalam. A special perfonnance of ‘Brahmachari Koothu’ is conducted only in this temple and this is for the benefit of those who have no childfen. Mahamaya Devi, enshrined in the Kuthambalam facing south is well known as Kuthambalathil Amma. ‘Guruthi’ is perfonned for the Devi inside the Kuthambalam by devotees for the removal of all their problems and for the destruction of enemies. During the Annual Festival Chakiyar Koothu is conducted regularly.

Festivals – The main festival is in the month of ‘Kumbha’ (Feb. March). It starts on the day of ‘Karthika’ and lasts for 10 days. The ‘Trikarthika’ of the month of ‘Vrichika’ (Nov-Dec) and the ‘Thaipooyam’ of the month of Makara (Jan-Feb) are other important festivals. Many people come to the temple to perform ‘Shastivrata’ on the 6th day after the ‘Amavasya’ this is considered auspicious.

Offerings – Utsavabali, Tulabharam, Kavadi, Chuttu Vilakku, Udayasthamana pooja, Muzhukappu, Panchamrita abhishekam, Pantheerazhi, Kadumpayasam etc are the important offerings. Tuesdays and Fridays ‘Guruthi’ is performed in the Koohambalam for the Devi. ‘Palpayasam’ and ‘Appam’ are offered to Vishnu. To the Devi of Koothambalam ‘Guruthi’ and Varanivedyam, Raktha Pushpanjali are offered. To the Upadevatha Shasta, Neeranjanam is offered.

கிடங்கூர் சுப்ரமணிய சுவாமி கோவில், எட்டுமானூருக்கு தென்கிழக்கே 10 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் உள்ளது.

இந்த கோவில் கேரளாவின் பழமையான கோவில்களில் ஒன்றாகும். கிடாங்கூர் சுப்ரமணிய சுவாமி கோவில் கோட்டயம் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ளது. இது எட்டுமானூர்-புஞ்சார் நெடுஞ்சாலையில் இருந்து கிடாங்கூர்-மணர்காடு சாலையின் தெற்குப் பகுதியில் ஒரு கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் உள்ளது. மகரிஷி கௌனரால் சுமந்து செல்லப்பட்ட 'கமண்டுலு' அல்லது பானையில் இருந்து சுப்ரமணிய ஸ்வாமியின் சிலை சாய்ந்து தண்ணீர் வெளியேறியதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது. நீரின் ஓட்டத்துடன், விக்கிரகம் கிடங்கூரில் உள்ள விஷ்ணுக்ஷேத்திரத்திற்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டது. விஷ்ணுவுக்குப் புதிய ஸ்ரீகோவில் கட்டப்பட்ட கோவிலின் உள்ளே, சுப்ரமணிய சுவாமி இருப்பதைக் கோயில் அதிகாரிகள் உணர்ந்தனர், எனவே அவர்கள் விஷ்ணுவுக்குப் பதிலாக சுப்ரமணிய விக்ரஹத்தை வைத்தனர். எனவே வடக்குப் பகுதியில் உள்ள விஷ்ணு விக்ரஹத்துடன் சுப்ரமணிய விக்கிரகமும் புதிய ஸ்ரீ கோவிலில் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்யப்பட்டது.

கிடாங்கூர் நம்பூதிரிகளின் 64 கிராமங்களில் வரலாற்று ரீதியாகவும் ஒன்று. இது தெக்கும்கூர்-வடக்கும்கூர் மன்னர்களின் எல்லையாக இருந்தது. கிடங்கூரைச் சேர்ந்த 14 பிராமணக் குடும்பங்கள் இந்தக் கோயிலின் உரிமையாளர்களாக இருந்தனர். 14 பிராமணக் குடும்பங்களில் சிலருக்கு ஆண் சந்ததி இல்லாததால், ஆண்களை உடையவர்களே இந்தக் கோயிலின் ஒரே உரிமையாளராக இன்றும் இருந்து வருகின்றனர்.

கூத்தம்பலம் - பரத முனியின் நாட்டிய சாஸ்திரத்தின் கருத்து குத்தம்பலத்தின் உள்ளே உள்ள சிற்ப வேலைகளில் தெளிவாகத் தெரிகிறது. எனவே இது கேரளாவின் பல்வேறு கோவில்களின் மற்ற அனைத்து குத்தம்பலங்களிலிருந்தும் வேறுபட்டது. குத்தம்பலம் பெருந்தச்சனால் கட்டப்பட்டது என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது. ராமாயணம் மற்றும் மகாபாரதக் காட்சிகள் அழகாக சிற்பமாக உள்ளன

குத்தம்பலத்தின் ரங்கமண்டபத்தின் மீது கட்டப்பட்டது. குரும்தொட்டி மரத்தில் வளைந்த ஒரு பெரிய தூண் உள்ளது - இது ஒரு மருத்துவ தாவரமாகும். மண்டபத்தின் உள்ளே புவனேஸ்வரி தேவியின் விக்கிரகம் உள்ளது. பெண்கள் குத்தம்பலம் மற்றும் 'ந/அம்பா/அம்' நுழைய அனுமதி இல்லை. கூத்தம்பலத்தின் உள்ளே 'கூத்து' மற்றும் 'கூடியாட்டம்' நிகழ்த்தப்படுகின்றன. இந்த கோவிலில் மட்டும் குழந்தை இல்லாதவர்கள் பயன்பெறும் வகையில் பிரம்மச்சாரி கூத்து என்ற சிறப்பு நிகழ்ச்சி நடத்தப்படுகிறது. குத்தம்பலத்தில் தெற்கு நோக்கி வீற்றிருக்கும் மகாமாயா தேவி, குத்தம்பலத்தில் அம்மை என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறாள். குத்தம்பலத்திலுள்ள தேவிக்கு பக்தர்கள் தங்களின் பிரச்சனைகள் அனைத்தும் நீங்கவும், எதிரிகளை அழிக்கவும் 'குருதி' செய்யப்படுகிறது. ஆண்டு விழாவின் போது சாக்கியர் கூத்து தொடர்ந்து நடத்தப்படுகிறது.
