Hidimbeshwar Temple ~ Chitradurga

Hidembeshwar temple is one of the renowned temples, situated inside the Fort, of Chitradurga. This shrine has mythological significance and dates back to the time of Mahabharata. As per the legend, a rakshasi or a female demon called Hidimbi lived in one of the caves in Chitradurga. She lived with her elder brother, a gruesome demon Hidimba. They both were terrorizing people or the travelers, who passed in that area, by killing them, and eating their flesh.

During the time of exile, Pandavas with their mother Kunthi Devi, happen to pass in that direction, and instantly get attacked by Hidimba. Hence, to protect his brothers and mother, Bhima the second amongst the Pandava brothers, who was the strongest of all his other brothers, fights valorously with Hidimba and slays him. 

After killing Hidimba, Bhima married Hidimba’s sister Hidimbi and they had a son called Gatodgaja. The Hidimbeshwara temple displays the tooth of the demon Hidimba, and there is a huge drum here, that is said to have belonged to Bhima. It is also believed that the boulders present here were used as an arsenal during the duel between Hidimba and Bhima.

சித்ரதுர்கா கோட்டையின் உள்ளே அமைந்துள்ள ஹிடம்பேஷ்வர் கோயில் புகழ்பெற்ற கோயில்களில் ஒன்றாகும். இந்த ஆலயம் புராண முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்தது மற்றும் மகாபாரத காலத்திற்கு முந்தையது. புராணத்தின் படி, சித்ரதுர்காவில் உள்ள ஒரு குகையில் ஒரு ராக்ஷசி அல்லது ஹிடிம்பி என்ற பெண் அரக்கன் வசித்து வந்தாள். அவள் தனது மூத்த சகோதரனான ஒரு பயங்கரமான அரக்கன் ஹிடிம்பாவுடன் வாழ்ந்தாள். அவர்கள் இருவரும் அந்த வழியாக சென்ற மக்களையோ அல்லது பயணிகளையோ கொன்று சதை தின்று பயமுறுத்தி வந்தனர்.

வனவாசத்தின் போது, ​​பாண்டவர்கள் தங்கள் தாய் குந்தி தேவியுடன், அந்த திசையில் செல்ல, உடனடியாக ஹிடிம்பாவால் தாக்கப்படுகிறார்கள். எனவே, தனது சகோதரர்களையும் தாயையும் பாதுகாக்க, பாண்டவ சகோதரர்களில் இரண்டாவது நபரான பீமன், மற்ற அனைத்து சகோதரர்களிலும் வலிமையானவர், ஹிடிம்பாவுடன் வீரத்துடன் சண்டையிட்டு அவரைக் கொன்றார். 

ஹிடிம்பாவைக் கொன்ற பிறகு, பீமன் ஹிடிம்பாவின் சகோதரி ஹிடிம்பியை மணந்தார், அவர்களுக்கு கடோத்கஜா என்ற மகன் பிறந்தான். ஹிடிம்பேஸ்வரா கோவிலில் ஹிடிம்பா என்ற அரக்கனின் பல் காட்சியளிக்கிறது, இங்கு பீமனுடையது என்று சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு பெரிய டிரம் உள்ளது. ஹிடிம்பாவுக்கும் பீமனுக்கும் இடையே நடந்த சண்டையின் போது இங்கு இருக்கும் கற்பாறைகள் ஆயுதக் களஞ்சியமாக பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டதாகவும் நம்பப்படுகிறது.
