Sthala puranam and temple information

This small Vinayakar temple is quite popular, among locals and those from outside as well. The temple is located in Nallur, to the north-west of the Kalyana Sundareswarar temple in that village. In the Chola period, this place was also called Panchavan Madevi Chaturvedi Mangalam, in Nallur Nadu, a sub-division of Nritta Vinoda Vala Nadu.

The temple is located near a fairly large pond (which is the temple’s Agni Teertham). There is also a murti of a Nandi here, which is unusual. The surrounding pastures have names including Uttara Veedhi, Antara Veedhi, Somanatham, Sivalogam Udayani and Dakshinamurti Kollai. Based on these, and also information passed down the generations to the local residents today, this appears to have been the site of a much larger Siva temple in ancient times. However, that temple has vanished and what we are left with is just this shrine / temple for Vinayakar. It is possible that this Vinayakar temple was the Vinayakar shrine of the Siva temple that existed earlier. It could be that the Nandi belonged to the original Siva temple. There are also some records which suggest that the Siva temple that existed here was perhaps a Vaippu Sthalam.

There is no indication as to why Vinayakar here is named Thoppai Pillaiyar. However, His popularity is evidenced clearly, by the fact that this place receives equivalent importance and the same worship procedures, as Vinayakar does at the Ganapati Agraharam temple for Maha Ganapati (near Eachangudi).

Thoppai Pillaiyar’s murti appears to suggest the facial appearance of a child, and what makes this murti even more unique is the absence of a crown which is typically seen on Vinayakar’s head (even on stone sculptures). Locals attribute this as evidence to support the antiquity of the place.

It is believed that if the Nandi murti here (see above) is slanted, the place gets huge amounts of rainfall. Again, locals attest to having experienced this for themselves.

While not ancient, it is interesting to note the stucco images on the gopuram of the temple – three of them in particular. On the south is Natarajar in tandavam with Nandi playing a string instrument, and flanked by Sivakami Amman and Patanjali. Facing west is Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi, seated under the hood of Adiseshan. On the north is Murugan with his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

The temple also maintains a Ghoshala in its premises, which was guided by Kanchi Maha Periyavaa.

It is believed that any prayers to Thoppai Pillaiyar done with 11 pradakshinams, come true. Once the wish is fulfilled, devotees come back to perform 108 more pradakshinams.

இந்த சிறிய விநாயகர் கோவில் உள்ளூர் மக்களிடையேயும் வெளியில் இருந்து வருபவர்களிடையேயும் மிகவும் பிரபலமானது. அந்தக் கிராமத்தில் கல்யாண சுந்தரேஸ்வரர் கோயிலுக்கு வடமேற்கே நல்லூரில் கோயில் உள்ளது . சோழர் காலத்தில் இத்தலம் நிருத்த வினோத வளநாட்டின் துணைப்பிரிவான நல்லூர் நாட்டில் பஞ்சவன் மாதேவி சதுர்வேதி மங்கலம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்பட்டது.

இக்கோயில் ஒரு பெரிய குளத்திற்கு அருகில் அமைந்துள்ளது (இது கோயிலின் அக்னி தீர்த்தம்). இங்கு வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறான நந்தி மூர்த்தியும் உள்ளது. சுற்றியுள்ள மேய்ச்சல் நிலங்களுக்கு உத்தர வீதி, அந்தர வீதி, சோமநாதம், சிவலோகம் உதயணி மற்றும் தட்சிணாமூர்த்தி கொல்லை உள்ளிட்ட பெயர்கள் உள்ளன. இவற்றின் அடிப்படையிலும், பரம்பரை பரம்பரையாக இன்று உள்ளூர்வாசிகளுக்கு அனுப்பப்பட்ட தகவல்களின் அடிப்படையிலும், இது பண்டைய காலத்தில் மிகப் பெரிய சிவன் கோயில் இருந்ததாகத் தெரிகிறது. ஆனால், அந்த கோவில் அழிந்து போனது, நமக்கு எஞ்சியிருப்பது இந்த விநாயகர் கோவில்/கோயில் மட்டுமே. இந்த விநாயகர் கோவில் முன்பு இருந்த சிவன் கோவிலின் விநாயகர் சன்னதியாக இருக்கலாம். நந்தி அசல் சிவன் கோவிலுக்கு சொந்தமானதாக இருக்கலாம். இங்கு இருந்த சிவன் கோவில் இருந்ததாக சில பதிவுகளும் உள்ளனஒருவேளை வைப்பு ஸ்தலம் .

இங்குள்ள விநாயகருக்கு ஏன் தோப்பைப் பிள்ளையார் என்று பெயர் வந்தது என்பதற்கான எந்தக் குறிப்பும் இல்லை. இருப்பினும், விநாயகர் மகா கணபதிக்கு (ஈச்சங்குடிக்கு அருகில்) கணபதி அக்ரஹாரம் கோவிலில் செய்வது போல, இந்த இடம் சமமான முக்கியத்துவத்தையும், அதே வழிபாட்டு முறைகளையும் பெறுகிறது என்பதன் மூலம் அவரது புகழ் தெளிவாக நிரூபிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது .
