Koteshwar Mahadev Temple Rudraprayag is considered an immensely sacred place by the Hindus. Lord Shiva’s name is associated with this temple. According to the legends, Shiva meditated here while on his way to Kedarnath. Again, this place also has a rich mythological background. As per the mythological beliefs, Shiva came here when the devil Bhasmasur tried to kill and snatch his power. To seek Vishnu’s help, Shiva came to Koteshwar Mahadev Temple to meditate. After this, Lord Vishnu had killed Bhasmasur.

By Road: Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is about 3 km from Rudraprayag and one can reach there by hiring a taxi or car from Rudraprayag, Shared jeeps and buses are also available.

By Rail: Nearest railway stations to reach the temple are Dehradun (183 km) and Rishikesh.

(142 km) railway stations. You can easily get any mode of transport from Rishikesh as they are well connected by taxi or cabs.

Best time to visit:

The ideal time to visit this place is in July, August and Maha Shivaratri when there is a rush of pilgrims coming from all over the country to pay devotion to Lord Shiva. The best season to visit the temple is during the summer season as the weather remains comfortable and pleasant. During this time, the temple is easily accessible as compared to the other two seasons. During winters, the roads get blocked and to reach here becomes almost impossible due to the heavy snowfall. And during the rainy season, the heavy rain in this region makes the place less approachable as the roads become slippery and driving through the mud trails makes the journey tough. So try to visit there in the summer season.
