Kandaswamy Temple, Poravacherry, Nagapattinam

Kandaswamy Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Murugan located in Poravacherry in Sikkal Town in Nagapattinam Taluk in Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. This temple is linked closely with the temples in Ettukudi and Enkan Murugan Temples, through the legend that the images of Skanda in all three of these shrines were made by the same sculptor. Lord Murugan of this Temple is praised by Saint Arunagirinathar in his revered Thirupugazh hymns.

Legends

As per legend, the region was under the control of Chola King in ancient period. He ordered a sculptor from Porulvaitha Cheri village to sculpt an idol of Lord Murugan for safeguarding the region. He sculpted an idol of the Lord Murugan with six faces on peacock. The Chola king was so impressed with the idol and wanted the idol to be unique one of its kind in his kingdom. Seeing the beauty of the idol, the jealous Chola king cut off the thumb of the sculptor so that he could not do another one for anybody.

The king installed the Murugan Idol in the Sikkal. The sculptor moved to another village and found a stone suitable for making an idol. He started sculpting another Murugan idol exactly similar to the previous idol with lot of dedication and devotion. A local chieftain named Mutharasan was ruling over the village. The chieftain noticed the hard work of the sculptor and was visiting him regularly to enjoy the beauty of the idol.

While the idol was nearing completion rays of light flew from the idol and the peacock bearing Lord Muruga began to fly. The sculptor lost his eye sight on seeing this incident. He screamed out to catch (Etti Pidi means catch in Tamil) the peacock. The chieftain along with his soldiers were entering the sculptor house during that time. Hearing his scream, the soldiers caught hold of the peacock and made a scar on the leg.

Thus, the name of the place came to be called as Ettipidi and later got corrupted to Ettukudi. The chieftain built a temple at this village and installed the idol in the temple. The sculptor was able to sculpt a third idol with the help of his daughter as he lost the eyesight at Ettukudi. The third idol was installed in Enkan and the sculptor got back his vision and thumb. All the three idols respectively in Sikkal, Ettukudi and Enkan are similar in look.

The Temple

This Temple is facing towards east with five tiered rajagopuram. The sanctum enshrines an image of Lord Murugan. He is depicted with six faces and is twelve armed. He holds various weapons in his ten hands and other two hands show abhaya and varada hastha. Each of the six faces are carved with ear ring holes, fingers and toes with nails. He is shown seated on his peacock which holds a snake to its beak.

The Murugan, peacock and Thiruvasi are all made of a single piece of granite. He is accompanied by his consorts Valli & Devasena. The image is carved in such a way that the whole weight of the image is supported by the peacock's legs. Shrines of Sundareswarar, Meenakshi, Annadhana Pillaiyar, Swarna Kalika Devi and Idumban can be seen in the temple premises.

The Temple is located at about 500 metres from Sikkal Bus Stand, 750 metres from Sikkal Railway Station, 5 Kms from Nagapattinam Old Bus Stand, 6 Kms from Nagapattinam, 6 Kms from Nagapattinam New Bus Stand, 7 Kms from Kilvelur, 22 Kms from Thiruvarur and 141 Kms from Trichy Airport. The Temple is situated on the Nagapattinam to Tiruvarur route.

தோஷங்களைப் போக்கும் பொரவாச்சேரி அருள்மிகு கந்தசுவாமி திருக்கோயிலின் சிறப்புகள் பற்றி தெரிந்துகொள்ளலாம்.

மெய் சிலிர்க்கச் செய்யும் வரலாறு கொண்ட ஆறுமுகக் கடவுள் விளங்கும் அருள் தளங்கள் எத்தனையோ உள்ளன. அவைகளில் ஒன்று பொரவாச்சேரி அருள்மிகு கந்தசுவாமி திருக்கோயில். இந்த ஊரின் அருள் வரலாற்றின் தொடர்ச்சியாக எட்டுக்குடி மற்றும் என்கண் ஆகிய அருள் தளங்களும் உள்ளன. 

தெய்வத்தன்மை வாய்ந்த சிற்பி ஒருவர் முருகப்பெருமானுக்குரிய ஆறெழுத்து மந்திரத்தை ஓதி, ஆறுமுகப் பெருமானின் திருவடிவத்தை அற்புதமான முறையில் தெய்வத்தன்மை விளங்கச் செய்து முடித்தார். அந்த திருவடிவம் தான் பொரவாச்சேரி என்கிற இத்தலத்தில் உள்ள ஸ்ரீ ஆறுமுகப் பெருமானின் திருவடிவம்.

இவர் ஆறுமுகங்களும், பன்னிரண்டு திருக்கரங்களும் கொண்டு மயில் மீது அமர்ந்திருக்கும் முருகனின் இந்த விக்கிரகம் ஒரே கல்லால் செதுக்கப்பட்டது. முருகனின் மொத்தை எடையையும் அந்த மயிலின் கால்கள் தாங்கி உள்ளன என்பது வியப்பாக உள்ளது.

மேலும் வியப்பளிக்கும் மற்றொரு விஷயம் என்னவென்றால் ஆறுமுகப் பெருமானின் உடலில் நரம்புகள் தெரிகின்றன. முருகனின் ஒருபுறம் வள்ளி அன்னையும் மறுபுறம் செய்வானை அன்னையும் காட்சி தருகின்றனர்.

பிற சன்னதிகளும் இங்குச் சிறப்பானவையாகும். இங்கு இருக்கும் விநாயகப் பெருமான் அன்னதான மகா கணபதி என்கிற திருப்பெயர் கொண்டு திருவருள் புரிகிறார். மீனாட்சி சுந்தரேஸ்வரர் சன்னதியும் உள்ளது.

முருகன் கோயில் என்பதால் இங்கே செவ்வாய், வெள்ளி, சஷ்டி, கிருத்திகை ஆகியவை முக்கிய நாட்களாகும். குழந்தை பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கவும், விரைவில் திருமண பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கவும், சத்துருக்களின் தொல்லை நீங்கவும், செவ்வாய் தோஷம் நீங்கவும் இங்கே உரியமுறையில் வழிபாடுகள் செய்யப்படுகிறது.

தோஷங்களும், பரிகாரமும்

செவ்வாய் தோஷம் நீங்கச் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமையன்று பாலாபிஷேகம் செய்ய வேண்டும். எதிரிகள் தொல்லை நீங்க இக்கோயிலில் சத்ருசம்ஹார அர்ச்சனை மற்றும் சத்ரு சம்ஹார ஹோமம் செய்யலாம்.

குழந்தை பாக்கியம் வேண்டும் என்றால் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமையன்று பாலபிஷேகம் செய்து செவ்வரளி மலர் சாத்தி செவ்வாழை பழத்தோடு அர்ச்சனை செய்ய வேண்டும். அதன் மூலமாகக் கூடிய விரைவில் குழந்தை பாக்கியம் கிடைக்கும்

இந்த ஸ்ரீ வள்ளி தெய்வானை சமேத ஸ்ரீ சண்முக சுப்பிரமணியர் திருக்கோயில் இதனை ஸ்ரீ கந்தசாமி கோயில் என்றும் சொல்கிறார்கள். இக்கோவில் இருக்கின்ற ஊர் பொரவாச்சேரி. நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் இருக்கும் சிக்கல் என்கிற ஊருக்கு அருகில் உள்ளது.
