Introduction

The Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple at Chokkalingapuram near Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district is located on a model similar to the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. The source of this temple is Chokkanathar. The goddess is Meenakshi. The Rajagopuram has 5 levels, with 5 urns. To the right of the Shiva Sannidhi is the Somaskandar Sannidhi and then the Meenakshi Sannidhi. Like the Madurai temple, it is also known as the wedding venue as Meenakshi blesses Lord Shiva on the right side.

Puranic Significance

King Maravarma Sundarapandiya was talking to his queen. Then Rajaguru Paranjothi Sage came to see the king as a matter of urgency. The king did not come out after waiting for a long time. He told the guard to inform the king of the information he was waiting for and went to the Manalur Ashram where he was staying. Shortly afterwards, the king was informed that the prince was waiting. The grieving king went to the ashram and worshiped the prince and begged him to forgive his mistake. The Rajaguru forgave the emperor and ordered him to build a temple to Lord Shiva at Aruppukottai, also known as Sengatti Rukai Idattuvali, to remove the evil that had insulted the Guru and to remove the Guru's curse The temple was built by Maravarma Sundarapandiyamannan on this occasion. The source here is Sokkanathar who keeps the devotees at bay.

Beliefs

Datsinamoorthy and Saraswati Devi are anointed here to excel in education. As it is a temple located in Somaskanda, it is an ideal place to get rid of marriage bans and have children. It is beneficial to worship non-Rudu women during a particular season.

Special Features

Sunlight will spread over the source from March 20 to 30. Before worshiping Lord Shiva here, it is customary to worship Ganesha on the steps near the temple and break the scattering. Staircase Ganesha gives darshan with beard.

Like the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, all the festivities take place in a special way. On the Tamil New Year, anointing service will be held for the four priests and the Nayans and new clothes will be made. Tiruvilakku Puja will be held on the last Friday of the Tamil month

தல சிறப்பு: 

ஆண்டு தோறும் மார்ச் 20 முதல் 30 வரை மூலவர் மீது சூரிய ஒளி படர்வது சிறப்பு. இங்குள்ள படித்துறை விநாயகர் ஜடாமுடியுடன் தரிசனம் தருகிறார். இக்கோயில் பாண்டியர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது.

தலபெருமை: 

இங்குள்ள சிவனை வழிபடும் முன் கோயிலுக்கு அருகிலுள்ள படித்துறை விநாயகரை வழிபாடு செய்து, சிதறு காய் உடைத்து விட்டு, சிவனையும் அம்மனையும் வழிபடுவது மரபு. மதுரை மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயிலைப் போலவே அனைத்து விசேஷங்களும் சிறப்பாக நடைபெறுகிறது.

கிழக்கு பார்த்த ராஜகோபுரம் 5 நிலை, 5 கலசங்களுடன் பிரமாண்டமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. கோபுரம் தாண்டி சென்றவுடன் அமைந்துள்ள நந்தி மண்டபத்தில் கொடிமரம், பலிபீடம், சிவனை நோக்கிய நந்தி அமைந்துள்ளது. நந்தி மண்டபத்தின் வலது புறம் நவக்கிரக சன்னதியும், தூணில் ஆஞ்சநேயர் புடைப்பு சிற்பமும் உள்ளது. நந்தி மண்டபம் அடுத்துள்ள சன்னதியில் சிவபெருமான் சர்வ அலங்காரத்துடன் கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமர்ந்த கோலத்தில் அருள்பாலிக்கிறார். சிவனுக்கு வலது புறம் சோமாஸ்கந்தர் சன்னதியும், அதனை அடுத்து அன்னை மீனாட்சி சன்னதியும் அமைந்துள்ளது. மதுரை மீனாட்சி கோயிலைப்போலவே இங்கும் சிவனுக்கு வலது புறம் அன்னை மீனாட்சி அருள்பாலிப்பதால் இத்தலம் திருமணத்தலம் எனப்படுகிறது.

தல வரலாறு: 

ஒரு முறை மாறவர்ம சுந்தரபாண்டிய மன்னன் அந்தப்புரத்தில் மகாராணியுடன் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தான். அப்போது பாண்டியனின் ராஜகுருவான பரஞ்சோதி முனிவர் அவசர வேலையாக மன்னனைக்காண அந்தப்புர வாயிலுக்கு வந்தார்.

நீண்ட நேரமாகியும் மன்னன் வெளியே வராததால் ராஜகுரு, வாயில் காப்போனிடம், நீண்ட நேரம் மன்னனை காண ராஜகுரு காத்திருந்த தகவலை மன்னனிடம் தெரிவிக்கும்படி கூறிவிட்டு தனது மணலூர் ஆசிரமத்திற்கு செனறார். சிறிது நேரம் கழித்து வெளியே வந்த மன்னனுக்கு ராஜகுரு காத்திருந்த தகவல் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. இதனால் வருத்தமடைந்த மன்னன் ராஜகுருவை சந்திக்க ஆசிரமத்திற்கு சென்று வணங்கி, தனது தவறை பொறுத்தருளுமாறு வேண்டினான். மன்னனை மன்னித்த ராஜகுரு, குருவை நிந்தித்த தோஷம் நீங்கவும், குரு சாபம் விலகவும், செங்காட்டிருக்கை இடத்து வளி எனப்படும் தற்போதுள்ள அருப்புக்கோட்டையில் சிவனுக்கு கோயில் கட்டி வழிபடும் படி கூறினார். இதனடிப்படையில் மாறவர்ம சுந்தரபாண்டியமன்னனால் இந்தக்கோயில் கட்டப்பட்டது.
