Sengazhuneer Amman Temple, Veerampattinam, Puducherry

Sengazhuneer Amman Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Goddess Sakthi located at Veerampattinam in Ariyankuppam Commune in Union Territory of Puducherry. This Temple is one of the oldest and powerful temple in Puducherry. The Temple is famous for its Car Festival celebrated during Aadi fifth Friday.

Legends

Veerampattinam is a fishing village and a man named Veeraraghavan was living there in an ancient time. One fine morning, he set out for fishing in a nearby rivulet. He had no catch till sunset and was totally disappointed but he didn’t give up and made a final attempt before he returned home. When he was withdrawing the net, he was very happy as he felt a heavy resistant which is usually due to a big catch. But he disappointed eventually as there was no fish instead it was a big piece of wood. He took it home and kept it in the backyard.

One day his wife found no firewood for cooking and decided to cut the wood to make it useful. When she hit the wood with an axe, it was shocking and she couldn’t believe it as blood was oozing out from the axe cut. She immediately informed her husband and the villagers. Astonished Veera Raghavan kept the wood inside his home and started performing pooja. He was very happy and life became prosperous for him.

After some days, Amman (Lady God) appeared in Veeraraghavan’s dream and told him that you got the wood because of my blessings. She asked him to use the wood as Peeta (Base) and to install her idol on the base at a specific location in the village. She asked him to worship the idol as Sengazhuneer Amman before disappearing from his dream. Veeraraghavan informed the villagers about his dream. All the villagers set out to find the place indicated by Amman. They found an ant-hill from where a serpent (cobra) came out and beat the ground thrice with its hood, thus showing them the place where they had to establish the idol.

The wood was brought for setting the peeta and made a granite idol of Sengazhuneer Amman head. The temple was gradually developed stage by stage from a small hut to a huge temple over the centuries. A temple car was made centuries ago and it was the first temple in the province of Puducherry to have a temple car.

The Temple

The temple is built with mandapam, Raja gopuram, Dwajasthambam, Hall outside the temple. Presiding Deity is called as Sengazhuneer Amman. The idol of Ambica is made of Devadharu wood. She is the family deity of the fisherman of this region. Presiding Deity faces the sea while the other seven deities face the north. The temple also houses Lord Shiva, Ganapathy and Murugan in the Temple premises. The temple is located very closer to the beach and devotees who are visiting the temple should visit the beach before they are entering in the temples in Pondicherry.

Temple Opening Time

The Temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Festivals

A grand festival is celebrated every year for six continuous Fridays starting from the Tamil month of Aadi. Special importance is given to the fifth Friday, popularly called as Veerampattinam Ther Thiruvizha (Veerampattinam Car Festival) and is declared as public holiday by the Government of Puducherry. On this day, thousands of pilgrims throng this holy place to pull the Temple car and celebrate the festival. The festival is being celebrated since the date immemorial. Right from the days of the French rule, it was a custom to invite the Lt. Governor of Puducherry to commemorate the festival and start the Temple car procession by pulling its super giant rope.

The last Friday will evidence ‘Muthu Pallakku’ festival which is the end of the six-week-long festival. Over 100,000 to 200,000 people from different regions Puducherry and Tamil Nadu will gather for 5th and 6th Fridays. The people of the village come together to organize and celebrate the festival in a greater way with happiness. Other festivals including Masi Magam, Pongal, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Vijayadashami and Thirukarthigai were also celebrated at different occasions.

Prayers

Goddess Sengazhuneer Amman responds to every prayer of the devotees, those with impaired vision in particular. People also pray for children and weddings. For desired results, they bath in the sea, offer abishekam and archanas to the goddess. Devotees offer vastras to the goddess and contribute for temple renovation.

The Temple is located at about 2 Kms from Ariyankuppam Bus Stop, 2.5 Kms from Ariyankuppam New Bus Stop, 4 Kms from Chunnambar Boat House, 7 Kms from Puducherry Main Bus Stand, 8 Kms from Puducherry Railway Station, 11 Kms from Puducherry Airport, 20 Kms from Cuddalore and 153 Kms from Chennai Airport. The Temple is situated on Puducherry to Cuddalore Route (NH 45A). The place is well connected to Puducherry by means of Bus and Autos. If you are coming from Cuddalore or Pondicherry by Bus, Tourists are advised to get down at Ariyankuppam Bus Stop and take Auto from the Bus Stop to reach this place. There are also local private and government buses goes very close to this Temple, but the frequency is limited. Nearest Railway Station is located at Puducherry. Nearest Airport is located at Puducherry and Chennai.

தமிழ்நாட்டின் பழைமையான இந்துக் கோயில்களில் அத்தி சிலைகள் ஒரு மாசு மருவில்லாத புனிதமான மரமாகக் விளங்குகிறது. அத்தி மரத்தில் கடவுள் சிலை வடிப்பதை சைவ, மற்றும் வைணவ ஆகமங்கள் அனுமதிக் கின்றன.

அத்தி மர அற்புத சக்தி அதர்வண வேதத்தில் ஒரு பகுதியில் கூறப் பட்டுள்ளது. அரிச்சந்திரன் தனக்குக் கிரீடமும் மற்றும் சிம்மாசனமும் அத்தி மரத்தில் செய்ததாகக் கூறப்படு கிறது. பழம்பெரும் காலங்களில் நம் முன்னோர்கள் அத்தி மரத்தில் தாயத்து செய்து கழுத்தில் போட்டுக் கொண்டனர். இவை அனைத்தும் ஒரு சுகபோகம் பெற செய்யப்பட்டது.

அசுர குரு சுக்கிராச் சாரியார் அத்தி மரமாக மறுபிறவி எடுத்ததாகக் கூறப் பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த அத்தி மரத்தைப் பார்த்தாலும், கண்டு காய் காய்க்கும் காணாமல்      பூ பூக்கும் என்று பழமொழி உண்டு. அதாவது காய்ப்பது மட்டும்தான் தெரியும். பூப்பதே தெரியாது என்பது போல சுக்ராச்சாரி மறைந்து நின்று தாக்கக் கூடியவர்.

மும்மூர்த்தி களின் ஒரே வடிவமாக பார்க்கப்படும் தத்தாத்ரேயர், அத்தி மரத்திலே வாசம் செய்வதாக குரு சரித்திரத்தில் கூறப் பட்டுள்ளது.

கணவன்- மனைவி இருவரும் ஒருவருக் கொருவர் கருத்துவேறுபாடு இன்றி வாழவும், கடைசி வரை பிரியாமல் இருப்பதற்கும், வீட்டில் அத்தி மரம் நட்டு வைத்து பராமரித்து வருவது நல்லது என்பது ஐதீகம். அத்திக்கு நல்ல அதிர் வலைகள் உண்டு. எனவே     அத்தி மரப் பலகையில் உட்கார்ந்து தவம் செய்தால் பூமியினுடைய புவிஈர்ப்பு விசை நம்மை அதிகம் தாக்காமல், எந்த மந்திரத்தை உச்சரிக் கிறோமோ, அந்த மந்திரத் தினுடைய பலன் முழுமையாகக் கிடைக்கும். இந்த தொகுப்பில் புதுச்சேரி அத்தி மர செங்கழுநீர் அம்மன் கோவில் பற்றி பார்க்கலாம்.

பழமையான அத்தி மர செங்கழுநீர் அம்மன் கோவில் வீராம்பட்டினம் கிராமம், புதுச்சேரியில் உள்ளது. இவற்றிற்கும் ஒரு கதை உள்ளது. வீரராகவர் என்ற மீனவர் செங்கழுநீர் ஓடைக்குச் சென்று மீன் பிடிப்பதற்காக வலையை வீசினார்.

அப்பொழுது உருண்டை யான மரக்கட்டை கிட்டியது. அவற்றை வெட்டும் பொழுது ரத்தம் வந்ததாகவும் கூறப்படு கிறது. அன்றே அவர் கனவில் அம்மன் தோன்றி அவரிடம் பக்தனே, பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டு களுக்கு முன்பு தெய்வீகம் பெற்ற பராசக்தியின் அம்சம் நான் இந்த பகுதி மக்கள் செய்த தவத்தின் பயனாக இங்குக் கோயில் கொண்டு அருள் வழங்க வந்துள்ளேன்.

என் வருகையின் அடையாளமே, உன்னிடம் உள்ள அத்தி மரத்துண்டு. எனவே நான் குறிப்பிடும் இடத்தில் அந்த மரத்துண்டைப் பீடமாக ஸ்தாபித்து, அதன்மேல் என் திருவுருவை விக்கிரகமாகப் பிரதிஷ்டை செய்து வழிபட்டு, மேலும் என்னைச் செங்கழுநீர் அம்மன் என்று அழையுங்கள் என்று கூறிவிட்டு அன்னை மறைந்தாள்.

பிறகு அந்த கோவில் சிறப்புற விழாக்கள் நடைபெறு கிறது. இங்கு ஆடி மாதம் வெள்ளிக் கிழமைகள் தொடர்ச்சியாக வீராம் பட்டினமே தொடர்ச்சியாக வீராம் பட்டினமே திருவிழாக்கோலம் பூண்டிருக்கும். பிரெஞ்சு ஆட்சிக் காலத்தில் முதலே கவர்னர் தேர் திருவிழாவில் கலந்து கொண்டு தேரின் வடம் பிடித்துத் தேரோட்டத் தைத் தொடங்கி வைத்தார் என்று கூறப்படு கிறது. கடலில் பெற்றதால் சுக்கிரன், சந்திரன் தோஷம் உள்ளவர்கள் இந்த கடவுளை வணங்கலாம். இந்த அம்மன் எல்லா வளமும் தருபவளாக அத்தியில் அமர்ந்து இருக்கிறாள்.

இந்த ஆலயம் தினமும் காலை 6 மணி முதல் பகல் 12.30 மணி வரையும், மாலை 4.30 மணி முதல் இரவு 9 மணி வரையும் தரிசனத் திற்காக திறந் திருக்கும்.

இந்த கோவில் புதுச்சேரி- கடலூர் நெடுஞ் சாலையில் உள்ள அரியாங் குப்பம் பகுதி யிலிருந்து 2 கிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் வீராம்பட்டினம் உள்ளது. புதுச்சேரி பேருந்து நிலையத்தில் இருந்து வீராம்பட்டினத்திற்கு டவுன் பஸ் வசதியும் உள்ளது.
