Vaidyanatheswara Temple – Overview

The Vaidyanatheswara temple is a famous pilgrimage center in south India. It is one of the Panchalinga Sthalas, the other four being in Talakad too. It is believed that one who obtains a darshan of the five Lingas will be absolved of all sins. Pilgrims from all over South India gather here to worship Lord Shiva.

Vaidyanatheswara Temple – Mythology

An ascetic named Somadatta was on his way to this temple with his disciples when they were killed by a herd of elephants. They were in turn reborn as elephants and continued to worship Lord Shiva in the form of a tree. Once two hunters, Tala and Kadu tried to cut down this tree and blood rushed out from it. They heard a divine voice declaring that the tree was a form of the Lord and asked them to stop trying to cut it down.

They stopped and covered the wound with leaves and fruits. The wound was healed. From then on, the place was known as Talakad. As Shiva, in the form of a tree, healed himself – he was known as Vaidyanatha or Vaideeshwara – as Vaidya in Sanskrit means Doctor.

The Vaidyanatha temple was constructed by the Chola kings who ruled this part of Karnataka in the 14th century. This temple was built in the Dravidian style and has two huge Dwarapalakas standing at the entrance to the main shrine. The doorways are intricately carved and the outer walls too are covered in sculptures.

There is a beautiful figure of Ganesha riding on his vehicle, the mouse. There is also a statue of Nandi installed at the entrance. The walls are covered by depictions of various forms of Shiva and Vishnu. A beautiful chain of granite rings is sculpted at one end of the outer roof. These rings hang down from the roof, with no joints. It is a magnificent piece of workmanship when the artisans had nothing but a chisel and hammer to work with.

Talakad is located at a distance of 185 km from Bangalore and 45 km from Mysore. Frequent bus services will be available from these places.

வைத்தியநாதேஸ்வரர் கோவில் - புராணம்

சோமதத்தன் என்ற துறவி தனது சீடர்களுடன் இந்தக் கோயிலுக்குச் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தபோது யானைக்கூட்டத்தால் கொல்லப்பட்டார். அவர்கள் மீண்டும் யானைகளாகப் பிறந்து மர வடிவில் சிவபெருமானை வழிபட்டு வந்தனர். ஒருமுறை இரண்டு வேட்டைக்காரர்கள், தாலா மற்றும் காடு இந்த மரத்தை வெட்ட முயன்றனர், அதிலிருந்து இரத்தம் வெளியேறியது. அந்த மரத்தை இறைவனின் வடிவம் என்று அறிவிக்கும் தெய்வீகக் குரல் கேட்ட அவர்கள், அதை வெட்டும் முயற்சியை நிறுத்துமாறு கேட்டுக் கொண்டனர்.

அவர்கள் நிறுத்தி காயத்தை இலைகள் மற்றும் பழங்களால் மூடினர். காயம் குணமானது. அன்றிலிருந்து அந்த இடம் தலக்காடு என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டது. சிவன், ஒரு மரத்தின் வடிவில், தன்னைக் குணப்படுத்திக் கொண்டதால் - அவர் வைத்தியநாதர் அல்லது வைதீஸ்வரர் என்று அழைக்கப்பட்டார் - சமஸ்கிருதத்தில் வைத்யா என்றால் மருத்துவர் என்று பொருள்.

14ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் கர்நாடகாவின் இந்தப் பகுதியை ஆண்ட சோழ மன்னர்களால் கட்டப்பட்டது வைத்தியநாதர் கோயில். இந்த கோயில் திராவிட பாணியில் கட்டப்பட்டது மற்றும் பிரதான சன்னதியின் நுழைவாயிலில் இரண்டு பெரிய துவாரபாலகர்கள் நிற்கிறார்கள். கதவுகள் நுணுக்கமாக செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன மற்றும் வெளிப்புற சுவர்களும் சிற்பங்களால் மூடப்பட்டிருக்கும்.

அவரது வாகனமான எலியின் மீது விநாயகர் வீற்றிருக்கும் அழகிய உருவம் உள்ளது. நுழைவாயிலில் நந்தி சிலையும் நிறுவப்பட்டுள்ளது. சிவன் மற்றும் விஷ்ணுவின் பல்வேறு வடிவங்களின் சித்தரிப்புகளால் சுவர்கள் மூடப்பட்டுள்ளன. வெளிப்புற கூரையின் ஒரு முனையில் கிரானைட் வளையங்களின் அழகிய சங்கிலி செதுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இந்த மோதிரங்கள் கூரையிலிருந்து கீழே தொங்கும், எந்த மூட்டுகளும் இல்லை. கைவினைஞர்களிடம் வேலை செய்ய உளி மற்றும் சுத்தியலைத் தவிர வேறு எதுவும் இல்லாதபோது இது ஒரு அற்புதமான வேலைப்பாடு.
