Shree Mahalakshmi Devasthana or (Sri) Shri Mahalakshmi Temple is at Uchila in the Udupi district. Read on to know about the temple’s architecture and legends.

For fishermen in the coastal region around Udupi and Mangaluru, the Shree Mahalakshmi Temple at Uchila is one of the most important places of worship.

Dedicated to the Goddess Mahalaxmi, the idol housed in this temple is believed to be the third most revered Mahalaxmi idol after those in Kolhapur and Mumbai. The temple has been recently renovated.

Uchila Shree Mahalakshmi Temple Architecture

The original construction of the temple dates back to 1957. It was constructed to facilitate Mogaveeras and is considered an excellent example of Tulunad Architecture. Tulunad Architecture is a blend of styles from northern Kerala and southern Karnataka.

It is characterized by sloping roofs in response to the heavy monsoons, employment of laterite stone and a flagpole at the entrance.

The temple complex is built over 6 acres of land with a temple Kere or lake in the northeast corner. The outer complex of the temple houses the Vasantha Mandapam in the southeast and a Dwajasthama in front of the main entrance.

The temple’s Sanctum Sanctorum features traditional stone walls covered with a copper sheet. It has two enclosures. The idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi is placed within the inner section while the larger, outer section is used for performing poojas.

As one enters the inner temple complex, a temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali stands on the left. A temple dedicated to Shree Prasanna Ganapathi stands at the southwest corner. The art within the temple is reminiscent of the art seen in Belur and Halebeedu.

Worship At The Shree Mahalakshmi Temple, Uchila

Apart from its architectural beauty, the temple is also known for its unique puja procedures. Like the temple of Lord Krishna of Udupi, this temple too sees puja services from morning to evening.

In all, there are 16 services conducted daily. The Navratri season is special here with the idol being decorated, especially every day. A grand annual car festival is also held annually during the Suggi period.

The Sri Mahalakshmi Temple is located just off NH66. It is a 23 minute-drive from Udupi and a 55-minute drive from Mangaluru.

By Rail

உச்சிலா மகாலட்சுமி திருக்கோயில் குறித்து இங்கே காண்போம்.

ஸ்ரீ மகாலட்சுமி சகல மங்களங்களும் அருளக்கூடியவர். இந்த பராம்பிகைக்கு பல்வேறு இடங்களில் ஆலயங்கள் அமைந்துள்ளன. நாம் இப்போது காண இருப்பது கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தில் உடுப்பியின் அருகே உச்சிலா மகாலட்சுமி என்கிற தலம்.

கேரளா பாணியிலிருந்தாலும் பிற்கால கட்டுமானம் என்பதையும் நாம் காணலாம். 1957இல் கட்டப்பட்ட ஆலயம் இது என்கிறார்கள். மிகப்பெரிய பரப்புடன் கூடிய ஆலய முகப்பிலேயே அழகான திருக்குளம் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. பிரதான முகப்பைக் கடந்து உள்ளே சென்றால் பிரபையுடன் கூடிய விநாயகப் பெருமானின் சன்னதி உள்ளது.

விநாயகப் பெருமானை வணங்கி நகர்ந்தால் ஆற்றலின் வடிவாகத் தென்படும் மகாகாளியைச் சன்னதி உள்ளது. மகாகாளி நின்ற கோலத்தில் தரிசனம் அளிக்கிறார்.

பின்னர் மூலஸ்தானத்தில் காட்சி தருகிறார் ஸ்ரீ மகாலட்சுமி. பெருமாளின் திவ்ய ஆயுதங்களைத் தாயாரும் தன்னுடன் வைத்து தரிசனம் தருகிறார். நறுமணம் மிக்க மலர்கள் அர்ச்சிக்கச் சிறந்தவை என்றாலும் குங்குமத்தால் அர்ச்சிப்பது மிகச்சிறந்தது.

இங்கே அது விஷேசமாகச் செய்யப்படுகிறது. அர்ச்சனை செய்த குங்குமத்தைப் பெற்றுச் சென்று வீட்டில் இருக்கும் குங்குமத்தோடு கலந்து தினமும் நெற்றியில் இட்டுக் கொண்டால் அது மிகப்பெரிய ரட்சை.

மேலும், தரித்திரம் விலகும், தடைகளும் விலகும் நன்மைகள் பெருகும் என்பது பக்தர்களின் அனுபவமாக உள்ளது. அதனாலேயே சிறப்பான குங்கும அர்ச்சனை செய்யப்படுகிறது.

லட்சுமிக்குக் குங்கும அர்ச்சனை செய்து அந்த குங்குமத்தைப் பலருக்கும் விநியோகம் செய்தால் எப்பேர்ப்பட்ட வறுமையும் விலகும். வெள்ளிக்கிழமை மாலை வேலையில் இதைச் செய்வது மிகவும் சிறப்பானது.

ஆலயங்களுக்குச் சென்று செய்ய முடியாதவர்கள் வீட்டிலேயே லட்சுமி படத்தை வைத்தும் குங்கும அர்ச்சனை செய்யலாம். மகாலட்சுமி வழிபட்டால் கேட்ட வரம் கிடைக்கும் என்பது ஐதீகமாகும்.
