Paramekkavu Bhagavathy Temple, situated very near to the Vadakkunnathan temple more than 1000 years old, this Paramekkavu is one of the grandest Bhagavathy temples in Kerala. It is one of the two groups participating in the famous Thrissur Pooram (other being Thiruvambadi temple group) festival. One elder member of an aristocratic Nair family of Kuruppal Tharavad was an ardent devotee of Bhagavathy used to visit this place regularly. On the last visit to this temple due to old age, he made heavy gratitude of his inability to visit her anymore. After his intense prayers, he was on his way back home and took rest under a tree near Vadakkunnathan temple.

To resume his return journey, he tried to take his palmyrah umbrella that he kept on the ground. He made a vain attempt to take the umbrella which was firmly fixed to the ground. It was the time an astrological ritual carried out by the Namboodiris to interpret the will of the Gods suggested the presence of divinity, presumably Goddess Bhagavathi in the umbrella. It is believed that after the consecration of Vadakkunnathan temple, the divine power of the Goddess was transformed to the present location. The tradition has been that as the primary seat of the Goddess was under the Ilanji tree at the Vadakkunnathan temple, the very first lighting of the temple lamp is shown in the direction of Ilanji tree every day.

The famous Ilanjithara Melam is an integral part of the Thrissur Pooram, a way of paying obeisance to Goddess Bhagavathi. The temple roofs are steep, pointed and covered with guttertiles. The central sanctum is surrounded by a cloistered wall, pierced at one or more cardinal points with a tower entrance. On Pooram festival day, it is said that on this day the Goddess from the temple will go to meet lord Shiva in the Vadakkunnathan temple. A friendly rivalry takes place between Paramekkavu Bhagavathy and Thiruvambady Krishna. From both these temples, a procession with 15 temples starts to arrive at the premises of the Vadakkunnathan temple. The festival is highlighted with numerous decorations, lighting, peacock quills and umbrellas on the decorated elephants.

Paramekkavu Temple is open from 6 AM to 11 AM and from 5 PM to 08:30 PM.

 1000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலான வடக்குநாதன் கோவிலுக்கு மிக அருகில் அமைந்துள்ள பரமேக்காவு பகவதி கோவில், கேரளாவின் பிரமாண்டமான பகவதி கோவில்களில் ஒன்றாகும்.  புகழ்பெற்ற திருச்சூர் பூரம் (மற்றொன்று திருவம்பாடி கோயில் குழு) திருவிழாவில் பங்கேற்கும் இரண்டு குழுக்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்றாகும்.  குருப்பல் தரவாட்டின் உயர்குடி நாயர் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த மூத்தவர் ஒருவர் பகவதியின் தீவிர பக்தராக இருந்தவர்.  முதுமையின் காரணமாக இந்தக் கோயிலுக்குக் கடைசியாகச் சென்றபோது, ​​இனி அவளைத் தரிசிக்க இயலாமைக்குக் கடும் நன்றியைத் தெரிவித்தார்.  அவரது தீவிர பிரார்த்தனைக்குப் பிறகு, வீடு திரும்பும் வழியில் வடக்குநாதன் கோயில் அருகே உள்ள மரத்தடியில் ஓய்வெடுத்தார்.

 திரும்பும் பயணத்தைத் தொடர, அவர் தரையில் வைத்திருந்த பனைமரக் குடையை எடுக்க முயன்றார்.  தரையில் உறுதியாகப் பதிந்திருந்த குடையை எடுக்க வீண் முயற்சி செய்தார்.  கடவுளின் சித்தத்தை விளக்குவதற்காக நம்பூதிரிகளால் நடத்தப்பட்ட ஒரு ஜோதிட சடங்கு, தெய்வீகத்தன்மையைக் குறிக்கிறது, மறைமுகமாக பகவதி தேவி குடைக்குள் இருப்பதைக் குறிக்கிறது.  வடக்குநாதன் கோயிலின் கும்பாபிஷேகத்திற்குப் பிறகு, அம்மனின் தெய்வீக சக்தி தற்போதைய இடத்திற்கு மாற்றப்பட்டதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது.  வடக்குநாதன் கோயிலில் உள்ள இலஞ்சி மரத்தடியில் அம்மனின் முதன்மையான ஆசனம் இருந்ததால், தினமும் கோயில் தீபம் ஏற்றுவது இலஞ்சி மரத்தின் திசையில் காட்டப்படுவது மரபு.

 புகழ்பெற்ற இலஞ்சிதரா மேளம் திருச்சூர் பூரத்தின் ஒருங்கிணைந்த பகுதியாகும், இது பகவதி தேவிக்கு தர்ப்பணம் செய்யும் ஒரு வழியாகும்.  கோயிலின் மேற்கூரைகள் செங்குத்தானதாகவும், கூரானதாகவும், சாக்கடைகளால் மூடப்பட்டதாகவும் உள்ளன.  மையக் கருவறையானது ஒரு கோபுர நுழைவாயிலுடன் ஒன்று அல்லது அதற்கு மேற்பட்ட கார்டினல் புள்ளிகளில் துளையிடப்பட்ட சுவர்களால் சூழப்பட்டுள்ளது.  பூரம் திருவிழா நாளில், இந்த நாளில் கோயிலில் இருந்து அம்மன் வடக்குநாதன் கோயிலுக்குச் சிவபெருமானைச் சந்திக்கச் செல்வதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது.  பரமேக்காவு பகவதிக்கும் திருவம்பாடி கிருஷ்ணருக்கும் இடையே நட்புரீதியான போட்டி நடைபெறுகிறது.  இவ்விரு கோவில்களில் இருந்தும் 15 கோவில்கள் கொண்ட ஊர்வலம் வடக்குநாதன் கோவில் வளாகத்தை வந்தடைகிறது.  அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்ட யானைகள் மீது ஏராளமான அலங்காரங்கள், விளக்குகள், மயில் குயில்கள் மற்றும் குடைகளுடன் திருவிழா சிறப்பிக்கப்படுகிறது.

 பரமேக்காவு கோயில் காலை 6 மணி முதல் 11 மணி வரையிலும், மாலை 5 மணி முதல் இரவு 08:30 மணி வரையிலும் திறந்திருக்கும்.

 ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் ஏப்ரல் மற்றும் மே மாதங்களில் நடைபெறும் திருச்சூர் பூரம் திருவிழாவின் பங்கேற்பாளர்களில் இக்கோயிலும் ஒன்றாகும்.
