Tirusoolanathar Temple, Tirusulam, Chennai

Tirusoolanathar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Tirusulam, well-known locality of Chennai City in Tamil Nadu. Presiding Deity is called as Tirusoolanathar and Mother is called as Thirupurasundari.  The Temple is beautifully located amidst of 4 hills denoting 4 Vedas. It was re-built recently and Maha-Kumbabishekam conducted successfully.

Legends

Brahmapuri:

According to the legend, originally, Lord Brahma was 5 headed. As Lord Brahma was too proud of himself, Lord Shiva cut one of his heads off to bring down his ego. Later Brahma continued his duty of creation. He prayed Lord Shiva that he couldn’t concentrate on his duty because he was disturbed losing a head. Lord Shiva blessed him and granted peace of mind after which Lord Brahma continued his duties peacefully.

After this incident, as part of his duty, Lord Brahma created one of the most beautiful dancers of Devaloka, called Thilothama. After creating her, Lord Brahma himself fell in lust with her, because of her divine beauty. Lord Brahma went and spoke to her. Thilothama refused to accept him saying that as Brahma himself being her creator, he is in the position of her father and hence she can’t think of involving herself with him.

Knowing this, the Siva Ganas (Lord Shiva’s soldiers) started chasing Lord Brahma, to punish him for the sin he committed. Lord Brahma hid himself, amidst the hills in this place and also realized his sin. To be relieved off the sin, Lord Brahma installed a Shiva Lingam here and started worshipping Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased with his prayers apologized Lord Brahma as he realized and admitted his sin. As Lord Brahma, the creator worshipped Lord Shiva here; it was called as Brahmapuri originally.

Thirusoolam:

The temple is situated amidst 4 hills surrounding it. In Tamil, the place between the hills is called ‘Churam’ and hence this place was called as ‘Thiru Churam’ which had later become Thirusoolam. It is believed that these 4 hills denote 4 Vedas.

Trichuram:

The temple gets its name from Trichuram family which ruled over the region.

History

This temple is said to have been built during the reign of Kulothunga Chola I, in the 12th century A.D. The walls of the temple have inscriptions from the Cholas and Pandyas. According to the stone inscriptions found in the temple, the place was called as Vanavan Maadevi Chathurvedhi Mangalam. The temple has big historical mysteries behind the walls. There is a story of a hiding place for precious metals and jewelry beneath the earth, where a secret path is said to exist. Kulothunga I Chola is said to have hidden treasures somewhere here, instead of inside the temple.

There exists a subway under the temple that connects the temple to the nearby hills known as "Panchapandava's Hills", where the king had his palace. In March 2018, there is four-member volunteer team Tirusulam Ilam Kalaiyar found a temple water tank near Tirusoolanathar Temple, which was filled with drainage water and dirty sands. After cleaning, they found an amazing well inside with a wonderful water to drink. There is another surprise is that the well inside Tirusoolanathar temple is connected to this tank.

The Temple

This temple is said to have been built during the reign of Kulothunga Chola. The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Immediately after the arch, Dwajasthambam, Palipeedam and Nandhi mandapam can be found facing the sanctum. The base of the temple is about 3 feet below the ground level. Presiding Deity is called as Tirusoolanathar. Lord is a Swayambu Moorthy and is facing east. He is housed in the sanctum in the form of huge Lingam. The sanctum has been built in Gajabrushta or Thoongayanai Maadam shape.

Vinayagar, Veeraasana Dhakshinamoorthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai are the Koshta Deities located around the sanctum walls. The Ganapathy is having a Naga Yajnopavita (Poonul) and is considered very auspicious. to remove obstacles especially for marriage and marital harmony. There is the Veeraasana Dhakshinamoorthy, as he is seen sitting in the ‘Veeraasana’ Posture, with his left leg folded and his right leg on the Muyalagan Asura. The Lingodhbava has a panel showing Vishnu worshipping Shiva. The Brahma and Durga are also very intricate.  

Mother is called as Thirupurasundari and is facing south. Mother Idol is about 5 foot tall. There is another deity of Thiripurasundari inside the main sanctum, just in front of the presiding deity. During a Muslim invasion, the original deity of Devi from outside the sanctum was damaged by intruders, thus the new Idol was installed in its place. A temple priest then dreamed that the Lord instructed him to place the damaged deity next to the main deity itself. So, the damaged deity of Devi found a place just next to Tirusoolanathar, and a new deity of his consort was placed outside the sanctum door.

There are shrines of Lord Srinivasan, Viswanathar with Visalakshi, Lord Murugan with his consorts Valli and Devasena, Arumugam, Muthu Kumaraswamy, 16 faced Markandeya Lingam (Shodasa Lingam), Naalvar, Natarajar Saba and Bairavar in the inner courtyard. Nandhavanam, Nagars under peepal / Bodhi tree, Vahana Mandapam, Urchava Mandapam and Navagrahas can be found in the outer courtyard.

Lord Aiyappan and Adhi Sankarar Shrines can be found on the North-east corner of the sanctum sanctorum in the outer courtyard. There is a rare Sarabeswara with two faces carved on the pillar in front. The Sthala Vriksham is the Vilvam Tree. Theertham associated with this Temple is Brahma Theertham. The walls of the temple have inscriptions from the Chola period.

The temple remains open from 07.00 AM to 11.00 AM and 04.00 PM to 08.00 PM.

The Temple is located at about 1 Km from Airport Bus Stop, 1 Km from Tirusulam Bus Stop, 1.5 Kms from Tirusulam Railway Station, 1.5 Kms from Chennai Airport, 3 Kms from Meenambakkam Metro Station, 17 Kms from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, 21 Kms from Chennai Central Railway Station, 20 Kms from Egmore Railway Station and 22 Kms from Chennai.

The Temple is located in Trisulam on the Guindy – Tambaram route, Chennai Suburb. The temple is located at about 3 Kms away from the main road. Take the road opposite to the Chennai Airport bus stop which passes through the railway level crossing and go around 3 Kms in the interior to reach the temple. Autos are available from Pallavaram, Airport & Tirusulam Railway Station.

கெட்ட நேரத்தை நல்ல நேரமாக மாற்றும் திரிசூலநாதர்

சென்னை மீனம்பாக்கத்தில் சர்..சர்.. என விமானங்கள் வந்து இறங்குகின்றன, மேலேறி பறக்கின்றன, பரபரப்பாக இயங்கும் நெடுஞ்சாலையை கடப்பவர்கள் இங்கு இப்படி ஒரு ஆன்மீக தலம் இருப்பதை அறிவார்களா என்று தெரியவில்லை. இறைவனின் பெயராலேயே இந்த ஊர் இன்றளவும் அறியப்படுகிறது. பிரம்மன் வழிபட்ட தலமாக இங்கு திரிசூலநாதர் எழுந்தருளியிருக்கிறார். நான்கு மலைகள் சூழ நடுவில் அமைந்துள்ளது திரிசூல நாதர் திருக்கோயில். தனது படைப்புத்தொழில் இடையூறின்றி நடக்க வேண்டி பிரம்மதேவர் ஒரு குளத்தை வெட்டி அங்கு சிவலிங்கம் அமைத்து வழிபடுகிறார். பிரம்மன் உருவாக்கிய பாணதீர்த்தம் கொண்ட இந்த சிவலிங்கமே திரிசூலநாதர் திருக்கோயில்.

நான்கு வேதங்களே நான்கு மலைகளாக, வேதங்களின் உட்பொருளான இறைவன் அவற்றின் நடுவில் வீற்றிருக்கும் இடமே திரிசூல நாதர் திருக்கோயில்.  பிரம்மதேவர் அமைத்ததாக கூறப்படும் தீர்த்தம் கோயிலின் தென்கிழக்கில் அமைந்துள்ளது. கோயிலின் தென்கிழக்கு மூலையில் அமைந்துள்ள கிணற்றில் இருந்து எடுக்கப்படும் தண்ணீரே இறைவனின் பூஜை, வழிபாட்டுக்கு பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. விமான நிலையத்திற்கு எதிரில், ரயில்வே கேட்டை கடந்து வந்தால், ஒருகிலோமீட்டர் தொலைவில் கோயில் அமைந்துள்ளது. கோயிலுக்குள் நந்தியெம்பெருமானை வழிபட்டு, நல்ல தரிசனத்திற்கு அனுமதிகேட்டு உள்ளே நுழைவோம். நுழைந்ததும் திரிசூலநாதரை தரிசிக்கலாம். திரிபுரசுந்தரி உடனுறை திரிசூலநாதராக இருந்தாலும், அவருக்கு அருகே சௌந்தராம்பிகை இருக்கிறார். நேர்பார்வையில் சௌந்தராம்பிகையை தரிசிக்க முடியாது, காரணம் திரிசூலநாதரின் அருகே இடப்புறத்தில் அவரை பார்த்தபடி நின்றபடி இருக்கிறார் சௌந்தராம்பிகை. இப்படி இருப்பதற்கு பின்னே ஒரு வரலாறு இருக்கிறது.

அந்நியர் படையெடுப்பின்போது கோயிலில் இருந்த சௌந்தராம்பிகை தாயாரின் கையில் கட்டைவிரல் சேதமடைந்துவிடுகிறது. அதனால் பின்னப்பட்ட சிலையை வழிபடக்கூடாது என்று கூறி, தனியே வைத்துவிடுகிறார்கள்.அப்போது அர்ச்சகரின் கனவில் வந்து தனது பின்னத்தை சரிசெய்து, மீண்டும் திரிசூலநாதரின் அருகே வைக்குமாறு தாய் அருள் கூற, அதன்படி சிலையின் பின்னப்பட்ட விரலுக்கு பதிலாக தங்கத்தில் விரல் செய்து பின்னர் திரிசூலநாதரின் அருகிலேயே அன்னையை இருக்கச்செய்திருக்கிறார்கள். அன்னையும், தந்தையுமாக உயிர்ப்புடன் அருள் தரும் தலம் இது.அன்னையை தரிசிக்க வேண்டும் என்றால், ஆண்கள் மேல்சட்டையின்றி கருவறைக்கு முன் உள்ள அறைக்குள் அனுமதி பெற்று நுழைந்தால், அன்னையின் தரிசனத்தை பெறலாம். காலம் காலமாக அருள் சுரக்கும் அன்பு முகத்துடன் காட்சிதரும் அன்னை, உண்மையிலேயே சௌந்தரம் ததும்பும் பேரழகி என்பதில் எந்த சந்தேகமும் இல்லை.  

இந்தக்கோயில் முதலாம் குலோத்துங்க சோழன் (கி.பி. 1070 -1120) காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டது.

 முதலில் வானவன் சதுர்வேதிமங்களம் என இந்த ஊர் அழைக்கப்பட்டது. முதலாம் குலோத்துங்கசோழன் காலத்தில் திருநீற்றுசோழநல்லூர் என்றும் பின்னர் இறைவனின் பெயரால் திரிசூலம் என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. பல்லவபரமன வானவன் மாதேவிச் சதுர்வேதிமங்களம், திருநீற்றுசோழநல்லூர், திருச்சுரம், சுரத்தூர், பிரம்மபுரி, திரிசூலம் என்ற பெயர்களில் இந்த ஊர் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.இக்கோயிலில் ஆதிசங்கரர், ஐயப்பன், ஆஞ்சநேயருக்கு தனித்தனி சன்னதிகள் இருக்கின்றன. கோயிலின் பழைமையை இங்கு நுழைந்ததுமே உணர முடியும். யக்ஷர் காலத்தில் கட்டப்பட்டதாக கூறப்பட்டாலும், அதற்கான சான்றுகள் கிடைக்கவில்லை.  பிரம்மனுக்கே அருள்பாலித்த இடம் என்பதால் திரிபுரசுந்தரி உடனுறை திரிசூலநாதரை வழிபட்டால் நமக்கு வரும் கெட்ட நேரங்களும் நல்லநேரங்களாக மாறும்.
