Swarnakadeswarar Temple, Neivanai, Villupuram

Swarnakadeswarar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Neivanai Village in Villupuram District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Porkudam Koduthu Aruliya Nayanaar / Nelvennainathar / Vennaiappar / Swarnakadeswarar. Mother is called as Neelamalarkanni / Brihannayagi. The place is called as Thirunelvennai during ancient times. It is believed that the temple was built during Chola period. This the 42nd Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 10th Shiva Sthalam in Nadu Naadu. Thirugnana Sambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. 

Legends

Swarnakadeswarar:

Once the place was very fertile with paddy fields and people were happy and prosperous. Wealth and luxuries made people forget God. Lord directed Varuna the God of rain to pour his power incessantly in the region. Heavy floods began to threaten their safety. Lakes, tanks and all water resources began to breach. People ran to Lord for safety. Lord came as a youth, asked the people to bring all the paddy bags from their homes and built a dam preventing further calamity. Though the people lost their possessions, they praised the youth as their saviour. 

He said that God was the giver of prosperity and they should not be ungrateful to the Almighty. The young man gave them pots of gold (Swarna) and advised them to recover the loss by using it and disappeared. When the villagers were wonderstruck, Lord appeared before them as Swayambu. People built the temple then. As the Lord gave them Swarna-gold, He is praised as Swarnakadeswarar.

Nel Anai:

Since Lord Shiva himself built the dam (Anai in Tamil) with paddy (Nel in Tamil) the place was named Nel Anai which later changed as Neivanai.

Saint Gnana Sambandhar in dancing form:

The legend has that Saint Gnana Sambandhar arrived on this land and found the entire area was sunk in the darkness. He was struggling to find the exact location of the temple, instantaneously Lord instructed Goddess to assist Sambandhar to find the location. Mother Parvati guided Gnana Sambandhar to this temple affectionately addressing him ‘My dear child’.  As soon as he heard the sweet nectar like voice of Mother Parvati, Sambandhar was in an ecstasy danced and sung praising the compassionate Goddess Parvati. The place from where Mother called the child saint is called Ethalavadi nearby.  In this temple Sambandhar can be seen in his dancing form.

It is believed that sages Sanakar, Sanatana, Sanandhana and Sanathkumara have worshipped Lord Shiva here. These four saints are collectively called Kumaras or Sanakadi. These four sages are believed to have roamed the universe in the form of young children. As per Hindu mythology, they are described as the “first mind-born-sons” (Manasaputras) or spiritual sons of Lord Brahma. They are the disciples of Lord Dakshinamurthy.

History

Thirunelvennai is an ancient and now small temple more than 1300 years old. This is one of the ancient temples of the erstwhile Thirumunaippadi Nadu. There are stone inscriptions in this temple dating back to the period of the Chola King Kulothungan-I. The lord’s name is inscribed as “Porkudam Kodutharulia Nayanar” meaning “the lord who gifted a pot full of gold.

Thirunelvennai is an ancient and now small temple. This temple has no main tower (Rajagopuram) and Dwajasthambam (flag post). It has a single corridor. The outer Nandhi near Bali Peedam is facing down not like looking side. Presiding Deity is called as Porkudam Koduthu Aruliya Nayanaar / Nelvennainathar / Vennaiappar / Swarnakadeswarar. Lord is Swayambu Moorthy and is facing east. The Shiva lingam is about 3 – 4 feet tall.

During Maha Shivaratri day’s sunrise falls directly on the Linga and replicate colors of blue, green, white and red respectively. This is a rare darshan to the devotees. Lord Shiva in the sanctum sanctorum is seated under a Rudraksha Pandal (roof) that has 7,500 large size beads. Adhikara Nandi is seen with both palms together here. Urchava Deity is Arthanareeswarar. Lord Shiva, as a procession deity is in a standing form in the middle of a trident symbolizing the oneness of Shiva and Shakti and the Arthanareeswara form.

Nandhi the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva is in a worshipping form spinning together its front legs, which is explained as if Nandhi is appealing to Lord for the welfare of the devotees. Mother is called as Neelamalarkanni / Brihannayagi. Mother is facing east. Mother Neela Malar Kanni graces from a separate shrine on the left of Lord. She is 5 feet tall statue. Lord Mahavishnu graces from the front Mandapam with Mother Mahalakshmi on his lap in a worshipping form as Lord Lakshmi Narayana. Both look with closed eyes as if in meditation.

There is a separate shrine for Lord Nataraja. There are shrines for Lord Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai, Navagrahas, the nine planets. Lord Kasi Viswanatha, Mother Visalakshi can be seen in the prakara. The idol of Gnanasambandhar is designed in a dancing form beautifully. Saints Appar-Thirunavukkarasar and Sundarar are nearby.

Idols of Bairavar, Suryan and Chandran can also be seen in the corridors. Special pujas are offered to Sri Bhairava on new moon days. Vinayaka of the temple is Lord Varasiddhi Vinayaka. Theertham of this Temple is Pennaiyaru (River Pennai) & Theertha Kinaru. The well Theertha Kinaru is situated in front of Ambal sanctum. Sthala Vriksham is Punnai Tree (Calophyllum inophyllum).

Temple Opening Time

The temple remains open from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. As the residence of the priest is just near the temple, the devotees can have the darshan of the Lord any time.

Festivals

Tirukarthikai in the Tamil month of Karthikai (Nov-Dec), Shivarathri in the Tamil month of Maasi (Feb-Mar) and Arudra Dharisanam in the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dec-Jan) are the major festivals celebrated in this Temple with much fanfare. Pradosham is also observed regularly. Special pujas are offered to Lord Bhairavar on new moon days.

Literary mention 

This the 42nd Devaram Padal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 10th Shiva Sthalam in Nadu Naadu. Thirugnana Sambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple. In his hymn of this temple, Saint Thirugnanasambanthar mentioned that “My lord resides in this fabled land of Nelvennai. Worshipping him is the duty of the righteous”. Devotees visiting this temple should make it a practice to recite this Pathigam.

Prayers

People pray to Lord for release from sins, for wisdom and prosperity in family. Devotees offer vastras to Lord and contribute for the maintenance of the temple. Devotees believe that performing poojas by applying white butter on the lingam (Vennai Kappu in Tamil) will remove obstacles from marriage proposals, help them get better job opportunities and relieve them from their debts.

The Temple is located at about 6 Kms from Kiliyur, 12 Kms from Elavanasur, 15 Kms from Ulundurpet, 18 Kms from Rishivandiyam, 24 Kms from Koovagam, 24 Kms from Thiruvennainallur, 30 Kms from Thirukoyilur, 51 Kms from Villupuram, 138 Kms from Trichy and 222 Kms from Chennai.

By Road:

Thirunelvennai is 15 Kilometers northwest of Ulundurpet in the Chennai-Tiruchirappalli Highway. Neivanai is situated on the Ulundurpet to Thiruvennainallur route via Adhanur. You can either take a right before Ulundurpet or go through the town and reach the temple. Bus facilities are available only at specific hours. A mini bus is also available to this village. Share autos are available from Ulundurpet.

By Train:

Nearest Railway Stations are located at Ulundurpet (16 Kms), Thirukkovilur (34 Kms) and Villupuram (57 Kms).

ஆண்டுதோறும் ஒவ்வொரு சிவராத்திரியன்று மட்டும் நிறம் மாறும் சொர்ணலிங்கம் நெய்வணை சொர்ணகடேஸ்வரர், விழுப்புரம்.

ஆலயங்களில் சிவன் என்ற பெயரில் தான் லிங்கத்திற்கு அபிஷேகம், ஆராதனைகள் செய்யப்படுகிறது. இதுதவிர, ஆண்டுதோறும் வரும்  சிவராத்திரியன்று சிவாலயங்களில் சிறப்பு பூஜை, வழிபாடு செய்யப்படுகிறது. இதெல்லாம் வருடந்தோறும் நடக்கும் பூஜை, புனஸ்காரங்கள் தான். ஆனால், தமிழகத்தில் ஒரு சிறப்பு மிக்க, கோயிலில் மகா சிவராத்திரி அன்று லிங்கம் நிறம் மாறும் அதிசய நிகழ்வு  அரங்கேறுகிறது. இன்று அந்த கோயில் பற்றி தான் பார்க்கப் போகிறோம்.

இந்த கோயிலில் மூலவராக சொர்ணகடேஸ்வரர் அருள் பாலிக்கிறார். கோயில் வளாகத்தின் முன்பு பலி பீடமும், நந்தி மண்டமும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. வளாகம் முழுவதும் ஞானசம்பந்தர், சுந்தரர், மாணிக்கவாசகர், காசி  விஸ்வநாதர், விசாலாட்சி சன்னதிகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. கிட்டத்தட்ட ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ருத்திராட்ச பந்தலின் கீழ் சுயம்புவாக எழுந்தருளியுள்ளார்.

ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் மாசி மாதத்தில் வரும் மகா சிவராத்திரி அன்று மட்டும் காலையில் சூரியனின் ஒளியானது லிங்கத்தின் மீது விழுகிறது. அப்போது லிங்கமானது பச்சை, நீலம், சிவப்பு, வெள்ளை ஆகிய நிறங்களாக மாறி சிவன் தரிசனம் தருகிறார்.

ஞானசம்பந்தர் யாத்திரையில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த போது, நெய்வாணை பகுதியில் எழுந்தருளியுள்ள சொர்ணகடேஸ்வரர் சன்னதி வந்தடையவதற்கு முன் சூரியன் மறைந்துள்ளது. இதன் காரணமாக வழி தெரியாமல் நின்று கொண்டிருந்த ஞானசம்பந்தருக்கு, சிவபெருமான் அம்பாள் மூலமாக உதவி செய்துள்ளார்.

திக்கு திசை தெரியாமல் நின்ற தனக்கு சிவபெருமானே வழிகாட்டிய உற்சாகத்தில் ஞானசமந்தபர் நடனமாடி தனது நன்றியை தெரிவித்துள்ளார். இதன் காரணமாக இந்ததலத்தில் திருஞானசம்பந்தர்  திருவுருவமானது நடனமாடிய கோலத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

ஒரு காலத்தில் நெய்வாணை பகுதியில் உள்ள ஒரு ஏரி ஒன்று உடைந்து வெள்ள நீர் ஊருக்குள் புகுந்தது. இதனால், அந்தப் பகுதியில் வாழ்ந்து வந்த மக்கள் அச்சத்தால் தங்களை பாதுகாத்துக் கொள்ள கோயிலுக்குள் சென்று வழிபாடு செய்தனர். அப்போது, சிவபெருமானே இளைஞர் போன்று ஒரு தோற்றத்தில் சென்று  ஒவ்வொருவரது வீடுகளிலும் இருந்த நெல் மூட்டைகளைக் கொண்டு நெய்வாணை ஏரியினை அடைத்து மக்களின் உயிர்களைக் காப்பாற்றினான். அதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல், உடைகளை இழந்த மக்களுக்கு சொர்ணங்களை வழங்கி அவர்களை செல்வமிக்கவர்களாக மாற்றினார்.

இதன் காரணமாக இந்த கோயில் சொர்ணகடேஸ்வரர் கோயில் என்று வரலாறு பெற்றது. சிவனுக்கே உரிய நாளான சிவராத்திரி அன்று ஊர் மக்கள் விழா கொண்டாடுகின்றனர்.

முன்னோர் செய்த பாவங்களால் துன்பங்களையும், துயரங்களையும் அனுபவித்து வருவோர், வருமானமின்றி தவிப்போர், கும்பத்தில் நிம்மதின்றி இருப்போர், தொழிலில் நஷ்டம், வேலையின்மை என்று பல பிரச்சனைகளை அனுபவித்து வருவோர் இந்த கோயிலுக்கு வந்து  சொர்ணகடேஸ்வரரை வணங்கி வழிபட்டு வர வாழ்வில் அனைத்து வளங்களையும் கொடுத்து செல்வ, செழிப்போடு வாழ வழி செய்வார் என்பது நம்பிக்கை.

விழுப்புரம் மாவட்டம் உளுந்தூர்ப்பேட்டை வட்டத்தில் ரிஷிவந்தியம்-நெமிலி சாலையில், உளுந்தூர்ப்பேட்டையில் இருந்து திருக்கோவிலூர் செல்லும் பாதையில் எறையூர் நிறுத்தத்தில் இருந்து 5.6 கி.மீ தொலைவிலும், உளுந்தூர்ப்பேட்டை கள்ளக்குறிச்சி சாலையில் 7 கிமீ தொலைவில் உள்ள ஏ. குமாரமங்கலத்திற்கு வடக்கில் 7 கிமீ தொலைவிலும், உளுந்தூர்பேட்டை தொடருந்து நிலையத்திலிருந்திற்கு வடமேற்கே 6 கி.மீ. தொலைவிலும் நெய்வணை உள்ளது.
