Madhya Pradesh towns where Ravana is worshipped and his death is mourned

In the districts of Mandsaur and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, Ravana is revered. Mandsaur, for instance, is believed to be the home town of Mandodari, Ravana's wife. The Namdeo Vaishnav Samaj of Mandsaur believes that since Mandodari was a native of the town, Ravana is respected as the learned son-in-law.

A 35-feet tall statue of Ravana is installed in the Khanpur area of Mandsaur. "We remember Ravana for his knowledge of all the Vedas and his devotion towards Shiva. Burning his effigy is seen as a sign of disrespect towards him and so, 'Ravana dahan' is never done in this town," said Ravi Ranka, a cloth merchant in Mandsaur.

As per Hindu customs, women cover their heads in front of their in-laws. And interestingly, since the town treats Ravana as their son-in-law, women cover their heads while passing-by or praying at the Ravana temple.

On the day of Dussehra, the locals in Mandsaur start praying to Ravana at 9:30 in the morning. The prayers end with chants of "Hail Dashanan, Hail Ravana". Dashrath Dubey, a local priest said, "We worship Ravana like all other gods and goddesses, as we believe in him and pray for prosperity, happiness and success. Though there may not be any archaeological evidence of Ravana and Mandodari's connection to Mandsaur, we just follow a tradition here because our ancestors named the town after Mandodari."

Ravana was said to be a great scholar and a devotee of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Ravana belonged to the lineage of kanyakubj brahmins (brahmins of Kannauj region), who were mostly priests and gurus in ancient days.

Near Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, a small village is named Ravanagram, in memory of the Lankan King. The people of Ravanagram, majority Brahmins, worship Ravana in a temple. "It is common to see followers of Ravana in this area. He is prayed to during marriages and Dussehra," said Dr Yuktansh Pandey from Vidisha.

Despite all the stereotypical beliefs and unflinching devotion towards Lord Rama in the country, it is fascinating to see that the people of Mandsaur and Vidisha choose to remember Ravana for the good in him.

 மண்ட்சௌரின் கான்பூர் பகுதியில் 35 அடி உயர ராவணன் சிலை நிறுவப்பட்டுள்ளது.  "ராவணன் அனைத்து வேதங்களையும் அறிந்ததற்காகவும், சிவன் மீது கொண்ட பக்திக்காகவும் நாங்கள் நினைவில் கொள்கிறோம். அவரது உருவபொம்மையை எரிப்பது அவருக்கு அவமரியாதையின் அடையாளமாக பார்க்கப்படுகிறது, எனவே இந்த ஊரில் 'ராவண தகனம்' ஒருபோதும் செய்யப்படுவதில்லை," என்று ரவி ரங்கா கூறினார்.  மண்ட்சூரில் வணிகர்.

 தசரா தினத்தன்று, மண்ட்சூரில் உள்ள உள்ளூர் மக்கள் காலை 9:30 மணிக்கு ராவணனிடம் பிரார்த்தனை செய்யத் தொடங்குகிறார்கள்.  "வணக்கம் தசானன், வாழ்க ராவணன்" என்ற கோஷங்களுடன் பிரார்த்தனைகள் முடிவடைகின்றன.  உள்ளூர் பாதிரியார் தஷ்ரத் துபே கூறுகையில், "நாங்கள் மற்ற எல்லா கடவுள்களையும் தெய்வங்களையும் போல ராவணனை வணங்குகிறோம், அவரை நம்புகிறோம், செழிப்பு, மகிழ்ச்சி மற்றும் வெற்றிக்காக பிரார்த்திக்கிறோம். ராவணனுக்கும் மண்டோதரிக்கும் மண்சௌருடனான தொடர்பு குறித்து தொல்பொருள் சான்றுகள் எதுவும் இல்லை என்றாலும், நாங்கள்  நமது முன்னோர்கள் மண்டோதரியின் பெயரையே இந்த ஊருக்குப் பெயரிட்டதால் இங்கு ஒரு மரபைப் பின்பற்றுங்கள்.

 இராவணன் சிறந்த அறிஞர் என்றும் சிவபக்தர் என்றும் கூறப்பட்டது.  ராவணன் கன்னியாகுப் பிராமணர்களின் (கன்னௌஜ் பகுதியின் பிராமணர்கள்) வம்சாவளியைச் சேர்ந்தவர் என்று நம்பப்படுகிறது, அவர்கள் பண்டைய நாட்களில் பெரும்பாலும் பூசாரிகள் மற்றும் குருக்களாக இருந்தனர்.

 மத்தியப் பிரதேசத்தின் விதிஷா மாவட்டத்திற்கு அருகில், இலங்கை மன்னனின் நினைவாக ஒரு சிறிய கிராமத்திற்கு ராவணகிராமம் என்று பெயரிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.  ராவணகிராம மக்கள், பெரும்பான்மையான பிராமணர்கள், ஒரு கோவிலில் ராவணனை வழிபடுகின்றனர்.  விதிஷாவைச் சேர்ந்த டாக்டர் யுக்தான்ஷ் பாண்டே கூறுகையில், "இந்தப் பகுதியில் ராவணனைப் பின்பற்றுபவர்களைப் பார்ப்பது பொதுவானது. திருமணம் மற்றும் தசராவின் போது அவருக்குப் பிரார்த்தனை செய்யப்படுகிறது.

 நாட்டில் உள்ள அனைத்து ஒரே மாதிரியான நம்பிக்கைகள் மற்றும் ராமர் மீது தளராத பக்தி இருந்தபோதிலும், மண்ட்சவுர் மற்றும் விதிஷா மக்கள் ராவணனை அவனில் உள்ள நன்மைக்காக நினைவுகூருவதைக் காண்பது மிகவும் கவர்ச்சிகரமானதாக இருக்கிறது.
