Chidambaram Ilamai Aakinar /Thirupulreswarar Temple  

It is the Shri Tirupurasundari (Balasundari/Youvanambal/Ilamai Nayaki) sametha Shri Ilamaiyakkinar (Youvavaneswarar/Thirupuleeswarar) temple.  It is on the western side of the Nataraja Temple.  There is a tank in front of the temple called Ilamai Theertham/Youvana theertham/Vygrapatha theertham.  The sthala vruksham is Thillai tree.  The temple is open from 7 am to noon and from 4 to 8.30 pm.  The contact telephone numbers are 04144 220500 and 094426 12650.  This is a very old temple which was in shambles for long.  The Nattukottai Nagarathar community took charge of the temple in 1820 and for the past 200 years, they have been maintaining it.

This temple is associated with two of the sixty three Nayanmars-Kanampullar and Thiruneelakantar.  The first Nayanar was in the habit of spending all his money lighting lamps in Shiva temples.  At one stage, he was bankrupt and could not find the means to light the lamps.  He plucked grass (Kanampull), dried it and made it as wick and was lighting lamps.  (According to one legend, when the grass was not available, he offered his hair as wick to light the lamp in this temple).  Hence he came to be called Kanampull Nayanar.  Pleased with his devotion, Shiva merged him with Himself.  This episode is enacted every year on the Thiru Karthigai day (Nov-Dec).  His shrine is in the prakaram.

This temple is known more for the second Nayanar-Thiruneelakantar.  He belonged to the Potters community (Kuyavar).  He was in the habit of making clay pots and presented them to Shiva devotees. He was leading a peaceful life here.  Unfortunately, one day he yielded to lust and had relations with a prostitute.  When his wife came to know about this, she told that he should not touch her and she took the vow in the name of Thiruneelakantam.  (According to Periyapuranam, she used the Tamil expression-Emmai- which is a plural and it meant that he should not have any relations with any woman).  Nayanar was bound by these directions and though they lived in the same house, they were not having a relationship.  This continued for long and the couple also became old.

Shiva wanted to show the greatness of his devotee as well as to remove the mis-understanding between the couple.  He took the form of an old mendicant and approached Nayanar.  He handed over his Thiruvodu (begging bowl) and requested Nayanar to safeguard it, as it was precious to him.  After considerable time, he returned and demanded his begging bowl back.  In the meanwhile, he had ensured that it went missing.  Nayanar felt bad and apologised.  He promised to make a new bowl.  The old man refused and took him before the local arbitrators, who were the Podu Deekshitars.

The case was heard on the banks of the temple tank.  The old man demanded that if the bowl was missing, Nayanar should confirm it on oath (Sathya Pramanam) on his son.  As Nayanar was issueless, the old man demanded that Nayanar should hold his wife’s hand, take a dip in the tank and confirm the oath.  Since Nayanar could not disclose the issue with his wife to everyone, he took a small stick and the couple holding both ends, took a dip in the tank.  When they came out, instead of the old couple, they came out as a young couple!  The old man disappeared and Shiva along with Parvathi on His Rishabam (bull) gave darshan.  He also granted the couple a place in Kailash.  In the list of 63 Nayanmars, after the 3000 Deekshitars, the first Nayanar to appear is Thiruneelakandar. As the Lord made the couple young ( Ilamai Aakuthal in Tamil), He came to be called Ilamaiyakinar (Youvavaneswarar) and the tank, Ilamai Theertham.  This Thiruvodu festival is enacted every year on the Visaka star day of Thai month (Jan-Feb).  This temple is suggested for married couple who are facing discords/problems in their married lives.

This temple is also associated with Sage Vykrapathar, about whom I had already mentioned in previous write ups on Chidambaram temples.  He is believed to have installed this Lingam. As he was with Tiger claws and vision, the Lord was called Thirupuleeswarar (Puli=tiger) and this theertham, Vykra Theertham. He is standing next to Nandi in front of the Lord.  He is also having a separate shrine in the prakaram.

At the entrance, there is a five tier rajagopuram.  This temple has two prakarams.  At the entrance, Aagnya Ganapathi and Suyasambika sametha Nandi (rare Nandi with His wife) are present. In the central shrine, Thirupuleeswarar/Ilamaiyakinar shrine is there, facing east.  Mother Tirpurasundari’s shrine is in the prakaram, facing south.  The shrines of Ganesa, Valli Devasena sametha Subramanyar, Gajalakshmi, Saraswathi, Thiruneelakandar with his wife, Kanampull Nayanar, Chandikeswarar etc are in the prakaram.  Koshtam accomodates Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbhavar, Brahma and Durga.

This temple also has a rare shrine for Santanakuravars.  In Saivite tradition, the first Guru is Dakshinamurthy.  He imparted knowledge to Nandi who in turn passed on the wisdom to Sanath Kumarar to Sathya Gnyanadarshini to Paranjothi Munivar… From Paranjothi, it was passed on in the following order:  Meikandar, Arulnandisivam, Maraignanasambandar and finally Umapathi Sivam. The last four are called Santanakuravars and they had composed works which give the essence of Saiva Siddantha.  ( The Mutt at Dharmapuram is having the prefix Thiru Kailaya Paramparai as this mutt was believed to have been established by the successors of the Santanakuravars). The shrine for them is rarely seen and this is one of the temples, where they are present.

தலபெருமை

பக்தியில் ஒளி பெற்றவர்

பக்தர் ஒருவர் ஒவ்வொரு சிவன் கோயில்களுக்கும் சென்று, விளக்கேற்றுவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரது பக்தியை சோதிப்பதற்காக சிவன், வறுமையை உண்டாக்கினார். தன் சொத்துக்களை விற்றும் தன் பணியைத் தொடர்ந்தவர், ஒரு கட்டத்தில் திரி வாங்கவும், வழியில்லாமல் கணம்புல்லை திரியாக்கி, இத்தலத்தில் தீபமேற்றி சிவனை வழிபட்டார். இதனால் இவருக்கு "கணம்புல்லர்' என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. இவரது பக்தியை மெச்சிய சிவன், நாயன்மார்களில் ஒருவராகும் அந்தஸ்தையும் கொடுத்தார். திருக்கார்த்திகையன்று இவரது குருபூஜை நடக்கும்.

தம்பதியர் தலம்

சிதம்பரம் நடராஜர் கோயிலுக்கு மேற்கு திசையில் அமைந்த கோயில் இது. கோயில் எதிரே இளமை தீர்த்தம் உள்ளது. தை மாதம் விசாகம் நட்சத்திரத்தில் திருநீலகண்டருக்கு சிவன் அருள் செய்த விழா நடக்கும். இவ்விழாவில் சிவன் யோகி வடிவில் நீலகண்டருக்கு ஓடு கொடுத்தல், தீர்த்தக்கரையில் சத்தியம் கேட்கும் வைபவம் விசேஷமாக நடக்கும். சிவன் சன்னதி எதிரே நந்திக்கு அருகில் வியாக்ரபாதர் நின்று வணங்கியபடி இருக்கிறார். தவிர பிரகாரத்திலும் இவருக்கு சன்னதி உள்ளது. தைப்பூசத்தன்று இவரது திருநட்சத்திர விழா நடக்கும். அன்று இவர் இளமை தீர்த்தத்திற்கு எழுந்தருளி தீர்த்தவாரி காண்பார். பிரகாரத்தில் மனைவி ரத்னாசலையுடன் திருநீலகண்டர், கணம்புல்ல நாயனார் சன்னதிகள் உள்ளன. விசாகம் நட்சத்திர நாட்களில் திருநீலகண்டருக்கும், கிருத்திகையன்று கணம்புல்லருக்கும் விசேஷ திருமஞ்சனம் உண்டு. தேய்பிறை அஷ்டமியில் பைரவருக்கு விசேஷ ஹோமத்துடன் பூஜை நடக்கும்.

தல வரலாறு

சிவபெருமானின் நாட்டிய தரிசனம் காண விரும்பிய வியாக்ரபாதர், சிதம்பரம் வந்தார். இங்கிருந்த தீர்த்தக்கரையில் ஒரு சிவலிங்கத்தை பிரதிஷ்டைசெய்து, பர்ணசாலை அமைத்து தவமிருந்தார். வியாக்ரபாதர், சிவனருளால் புலிக்கால் பெற்ற முனிவராவார். இவர் பூஜித்ததால் சிவனுக்கு "திருப்புலீஸ்வரர்' என்றும், சிதம்பரத்திற்கு "திருப்புலீஸ்வரம்' என்றும் பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது.

இளமை தரும் சிவன்

திருநீலகண்டர் என்பது சிவனின் ஒரு பெயர். இவ்வூரில் மண்பாண்டத் தொழில் செய்த சிவபக்தர் ஒருவர், எப்போதும் இந்த பெயரை உச்சரித்து சிவனை வணங்கிக் கொண்டிருப்பார். இதனால், அவருக்கு இப்பெயரே அமைந்துவிட்டது. இவரும், மனைவி ரத்னாசலையும் சிவனடியார்களுக்கு திருவோடு செய்து தருவதை வழக்கமாகக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். ஒருசமயம் நீலகண்டர் வேறொரு பெண் வீட்டிற்கு சென்று வரவே, அவரது மனைவி "என்னை இனி தொடக்கூடாது. இது திருநீலகண்டத்தின் (சிவன்) மீது ஆணை!' என்றாள். சிவன் மீது கொண்ட பக்தியால், அவர் மீதான சத்தியத்திற்கு கட்டுப்பட்டார் நீலகண்டர். மனைவியைத் தொடாமலேயே பல்லாண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்தார். இவரது பக்தியை உலகறியச் செய்வதற்காக சிவன், ஒரு அடியவர் வடிவில் நீலகண்டரிடம் சென்று ஒரு திருவோடைக் கொடுத்தார். "இது விலைமதிப்பற்றது. நான் காசி சென்று திரும்பி வந்து வாங்கிக்கொள்கிறேன்!' என்று சொல்லிச் சென்றார். சிறிது நாள் கழித்து வந்து திருவோட்டை கேட்டார்.

நீலகண்டர் ஓடு இருந்த இடத்தில் பார்த்தபோது, காணவில்லை. வருந்திய பக்தர் தன்னை மன்னிக்கும்படி கேட்டும் சிவன் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவில்லை. மனைவியுடன் தீர்த்தக்குளத்தில் மூழ்கி "திருவோடு தொலைந்துவிட்டது!' என தில்லைவாழ் அந்தணர்கள் முன்னிலையில் சத்தியம் செய்து தரும்படி கேட்டார்.

மனைவியுடனான பிரச்னையை சொல்ல முடியாதவர், ஒரு குச்சியின் ஒரு பக்கத்தைப் பிடித்துக் கொண்டு, மறு முனையை மனைவியைப் பிடிக்கச் சொல்லி குளத்தில் இறங்குவதாகச் சொன்னார். சபையினர் ஒப்புக்கொள்ளவே அவ்வாறு செய்தார். அப்போது, அடியாராக வந்த சிவன், ரிஷபத்தின் அம்பிகையுடன் காட்சி தந்தார். திருநீலகண்டர் தம்பதிக்கு முதுமை நீக்கி, இளமையைக் கொடுத்தார். நீலகண்டரை நாயன்மார்களில் ஒருவராக பதவி கொடுத்தார். இதனால், சுவாமிக்கும் இளமையாக்கினார் என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. தில்லைவாழ் அந்தணர்களுக்கு அடுத்து, இவரே முதல் நாயனாராக போற்றப்படுகிறார்
